There’s been a lot of talk in the news about obstructionism. Those pig-headed Republicans aren’t passing Obama’s agenda and okaying his nominees, probably because they’re jealous of him for being so handsome and wonderful – I paraphrased the media there. And it’s true, in most cases, a President should get the nominees that he wants for his own Cabinet. But what about judgeships? Judges can linger on for decades after a President leaves office, and a bad one can wreak havoc that echoes down the ages. That’s why you’re likely to soon hear the name Cornelia Pillard. Obama’s nominated her to the powerful DC Court of Appeals. And an acquaintance says that if confirmed, she would probably be the most left-wing judge in the history of the Republic.
Some of her opinions have included arguing that abstinence-only sex education is unconstitutional, that employers who don’t oppose mandates to pay for contraceptives are discriminating against women as “presumptive breeders,” and that ultrasounds create “deceptive images” of a fetus as an “autonomous being.” That is, they let women see that a fetus in the womb looks – surprise! - like a baby, and that unfairly discourages abortion. This week, the Senate Judiciary Committee is holding hearings on Ms Pillard’s nomination. They probably won’t get much coverage. If Republicans challenge her, they’ll be called partisan and obstructionist. If they just rubberstamp her, she could be making decisions that affect your life for decades. Do Americans really want them to take the easy choice?
