If you’ve having trouble dragging yourself out of bed to go to work this week, this news might help: this week, you actually get to keep your own pay. Sunday July 15th was “Cost of Government Day,” calculated by Americans for Tax Reform. Tax Freedom Day was way back in April. That’s when you finally earned enough to cover all your state, local and federal taxes. But if you add in the hidden costs of the government regulations in every product you buy, then you have to work another 69 days to pay for that. In other words, government now devours 54 percent of annual GDP, so we have to work for just over half the year to pay for it. But cheer up: from this week on, you get to keep every penny you make! Well, of course, you’ll still have to pay for a whole year’s worth of food, clothing and shelter out of it. But all those expenses combined are still less than what government costs you. If that makes you feel any better.
