Sunday, the First Baptist Church of the tiny town of Sutherland Springs, Texas, near San Antonio, was the target of the deadliest church shooting in US history. A gunman dressed in black combat gear and a ballistic vest entered the church during morning services and opened fire on the unarmed worshipers with a Ruger AR rifle. He killed 26 people, ranging from small children to a 72-year-old woman, and injured 24 more. He was later identified as 26-year-old Devin Patrick Kelley of New Braunfels.

After fleeing the church, Kelley was accosted by an unnamed neighbor who had heard the shooting, grabbed his rifle and rushed to intervene. The two exchanged fire, and Kelley dropped his weapon, got into his truck and sped off. But local resident Johnnie Landendorff had seen the exchange from his truck. He picked up the Good Samaritan gun owner, and the two gave chase at up to 95 mph, calling the police as they drove. Kelley lost control and crashed into a ditch. Police found him dead from a gunshot wound that was later confirmed to be self-inflicted. He had other weapons in the car, and it’s likely he would have killed even more people if the neighbors hadn’t intervened. Both men are being hailed as heroes.

NFL players still dropping to their knees

By Mike Huckabee

Some NFL players are still dropping to their knees during the National Anthem. But that’s not all that’s dropping. Attendance is dropping, interest in the NFL is dropping, and TV ratings are dropping. The next thing to drop may be advertisers dropping their contracts because they aren’t getting the numbers of viewers they were promised. Also, they chose to advertise during the NFL because they know who their customers are: patriotic, working class Americans. That’s obviously something that the NFL players and commissioner have yet to figure out.

A Huck's Hero salute

By Mike Huckabee

A big salute to Huck’s Hero Randy Lapidus of Columbus, Indiana. He discovered the struggles disabled people face after his daughter suffered brain damage due to cardiac arrest. The community raised money to help her, so he decided to do something to pay them back, by helping mentally-challenged and disabled people build their self-confidence and get some work experience on their resumes. Thus was born his hot dog restaurant, Special Dogs & More, where all positions are filled by people with special needs. He says doctors told him his daughter would never be able to function again, but working on an ice cream truck with her mom helped her recovery. Now, he’s giving that same work therapy to seven employees at Special Dogs.

Lapidus said, “The expression on their faces when they’re back there cooking, that money can’t buy. You can have all the money in the world and not be as happy as we are right now.”

His workers might be mentally-challenged, but they understand that there’s value and pride in doing any job to the best of your ability. That makes them smarter than a whole lot of people who think they’re pretty sharp.

The NY Daily News verdict

By Mike Huckabee

Interesting: even the ultra-liberal editorial board of the New York Daily News can’t bring itself to endorse the reelection on Tuesday of New York Mayor Bill DeBlasio, who is busily squandering the miraculous revitalization of the Big Apple wrought by Rudy Giuliani and maintained under Mike Bloomberg.

To sum up: the Daily News is saying that when the choice is between a liberal Democrat who is a known corrupt money-grubber with a record of failure in government and who only escaped indictment because law enforcement is so lax, and an untested New York Republican, you should reject the Democrat?

Americans did that in 2016, and the Daily News has been melting down over it ever since.

Save a prayer for Rand Paul today

By Mike Huckabee

Let’s also save a prayer today for Sen. Rand Paul. He was mowing his lawn on Friday when a neighbor allegedly blindsided and assaulted him. It was initially reported that Paul suffered only minor injuries, but it later came out that he suffered five broken ribs and is in considerable pain. It’s not known when he’ll be able to return to the Senate.

The motive for the attack isn’t known, but there was reportedly friction between the two before this. Paul’s alleged assailant is an anesthesiologist described by someone who knows both men as a “socialist,” a proponent of national health care, and pretty much the opposite of Paul.

It’s worth mentioning that if this was politically-motivated violence from the left, it’s not the first time Paul has been a target of it. He was at the baseball diamond when a crazed Bernie Sanders supporter opened fire on Republicans, nearly killing Rep. Steve Scalise. Paul escaped injury that day. You don’t hear much anymore about that attack or other the violence from the left against Republicans because it doesn’t fit the favored media narrative. But just because it goes unreported, that doesn’t mean it isn’t happening

Abe didn't get the memo

President Trump is probably relieved to be out of the Washington swamp and on a 13-day tour of Asia. His first stop was Japan, for a meeting with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. It seems that Abe didn’t get the memo from the American press that foreign leaders are supposed to shun and disrespect Trump. They sounded more like a mutual admiration society.
