I try to make sure that when I reference something, the quote is accurate and the source is reliable. A recent Facebook post mentioned a claim that the US murder rate would be in line with average European nations such as Belgium if the strict gun control states of California, New Jersey and Illinois plus the District of Columbia were factored out. Obviously, the point was that removing guns from the hands of law-abiding citizens does not reduce homicides. I assumed the numbers to be accurate, since they were widely quoted and the cited sources included the CDC and the Martin Prosperity Institute. If they are not, then I apologize for the error.

I’m flattered to think that the self-titled "Politi-fact" took me to task over this and some seemed to think this widely-circulated story didn’t exist until I noticed it. If I mistakenly repeat inaccurate data, I correct it.

Personally, I don’t understand this Internet-bred obsession with nitpicking and name-calling over the interpretation of statistics. It obscures much larger issues. For instance, do the nitpickers think that disputing the interpretation of some statistics means that strict anti-gun laws in places like Chicago and DC are actually working? Tell it to the Chicago children who now need escorts just to get to school without getting shot by gangs: http://articles.washingtonpost.com/2013-08-26/national/41446515_1_safe-passage-program-gang-boundaries-chicago-children

Maybe they think it proves that higher gun sales translate into higher crime rates? No, that can’t be it: http://www.foxnews.com/us/2013/08/04/virginia-gun-crime-drops-as-firearms-sales-soar/

Perhaps they think concealed carry laws increase crime? Then why is crime plummeting in Michigan, even as police payrolls are being slashed? Must be the unleaded gasoline: http://www.mlive.com/news/index.ssf/2013/08/less_cops_less_crime_mlive_inv.html#incart_special-report

Or maybe they hope to prove that America has a higher murder rate than all other nations because we have so many guns. Or that countries that ban guns have fewer murders. Again, wrong on all counts: http://www.kmph.com/story/23283092/gun-bans-dont-mean-lower-murder-rates-finds-harvard-study

That last story contains a link to the full study, if anyone wants to wade in and "fact-check" it. It concludes that murder rates in Europe are largely due to socio-cultural factors, but “in nations that have experienced high and rising violent crime rates,” passing severe anti-gun laws “is futile, for reducing gun ownership by the law-abiding citizenry — the only ones who obey gun laws — does not reduce violence or murder.”

Once again, let me make clear that this study did not originate with me. If you want to dispute the findings, take it up with the source, those lying, right-wing gun nuts at Harvard University.

the wife and i were at a local WALMARTS shopping the other day and i came across a MUSLIM woman in the store shopping ( ? ) , anyway she had on the garb complete with only the eye slot showing a bit of facial features. i wonder what kind of stir might happen if ..say..a BRINKS or other money type truck pulled up to a bank in some major city, and all of a sudden several persons dressed like that came waltzing into the bank. would there be cause for alarm? might this just be a new ploy for some smart-thinking would be thiefs? i also saw where a fella won a court decision to be allowed to take his drivers i.d. photo while wearing a spaghetti stainer, citing a new religion! while i did not care for his reasoning , i did like his idea!! just MAYBE, some of our leadership have to remember that this is OUR COUNTRY??

I am so fed up with the liberal attitude that honest law abiding citizens pose a threat by owning firearms. We already have more than enough laws that prohibit criminals from possessing firearms and using them in the commission of crimes. Enforce the laws already on the books and leave the honest citizens alone !
