Mike Huckabee News

George Zimmerman was found not guilty last night by a jury of 6 women who heard evidence, were instructed as to the law, and acted with clarity. They are not heroes, just citizens doing one of the most difficult and thankless tasks an American is called upon to perform—judging the guilt or innocence of another human being. George Zimmerman is not a hero. He was a young Hispanic man who believed he was in danger and used a gun to end what he felt was a threat to his own life. He will spend the rest of his life second guessing his decision to get out of his car to follow a young man he thought might be part of a crime wave in his neighborhood. And Trayvon Martin is not a hero. He was a young man whose life ended way too soon maybe because he decided to confront a man he believed was showing him disrespect. Even if one believes that the jury got it right with a not guilty verdict, there was no reason for high-fiving and back-slapping. It was a tragedy for all involved. Despite the screams of Al Sharpton who sees racism in everything and who claimed the verdict was a slap in the face of justice, this was in fact, justice as it was designed under our Constitution. Justice doesn’t mean perfection, or even right. It means we are reminded that we are a nation of laws, not men; a nation with imperfect legislators who write laws reflecting our collective moral code. Laws which are enforced by a separate branch of government, and when believed to be broken, are submitted to yet a third branch of government to try and resolve whether the laws were broken, are whether they are even just laws. By design, we have chosen to put the burden of proof on the accuser and the prosecutor and to presume the innocence of the accused unless he or she is proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Benjamin Franklin, borrowing from the English jurist William Blackstone, said, “better that 100 guilty persons should escape than one innocent suffer” reflected our system being weighted in favor of the accused. If there are no heroes, there are some villians. The media deserves to be excoriated for their role in inventing many parts of the narrative before the facts and evidence were presented. Thank God the press is not a true fourth branch of government. They emphasized a race factor because Trayvon Martin was black, but were blatantly dishonest in not acknowledging that George Zimmerman was Hispanic. Should they claim that he’s only half Hispanic, then they must be equally honest in saying that our President, Barak Obama is only half black and that if he had a son, he really wouldn’t look Trayvon Martin. The facts in the case as presented in court under oath were far different than the heated comments spewed by Sharpton and others who called more attention to themselves than to the tragedy. If a march needs to happen, perhaps it should happen in Chicago where the murder rate for young black males leads the nation. Almost one half of the nation’s murder victims are black, and a majority of them between the ages of 17 and 29. Black people account for just over 13 percent of the U.S. population. Yet they were the victims of almost 50% of all murders, and 93% of black murder victims were killed by other black people. We don’t have a race problem as much as we have a grace problem. Our culture declares that people are expendable and disposable, treat others with coarse and harsh contempt, and then are shocked at the murder rate. We don’t need a race summit; we need a grace summit. And God is still in the grace business.

It is so sad to know that a 17 y.o. teen lost his life b/c his shooter felt afraid to the point of thinking his life was at stake. The how's and why's may never be fully answered nor understood. Now large numbers of Americans that didn't know either Trayvon or George are sitting in judgement and making divisive statements and actions based on their own individual biases. Ironically, God doesn't see color, just His creation and the heart's of both parties involved. He sent His only Son to die a cruel and brutal death on Calvary's Cross so that Trayvon, George, and all mankind would have a CHOICE to accept Him as their personal Savior and Redeemer and have eternal life OR deny Him, turn away, and live their lives on there own guidelines and have an eternal life in Hell's fiery furnace.
Man is evil by nature and wants to explain life on his limited, corrupt terms. God is the ONLY JUST GOD and He will help each of us come to terms with this ugly mess and pain of loss of life if we would only turn to Him and ask Him to help us to accept His will.

This was proven to be self defence. Trayvon's history was even hidden from the trial.

Here's something I saw on Facebook that I received that I wish would be addressed:

2nd Amendment Hottieson ..You won't recognize me. My name was Antonio West and I was the 13-month old child who was shot at point blank range by two teens who were attempting to rob my mother, who was also shot. A Grand Jury of my mommy's peers from Brunswick GA determined the teens who murdered me will not face the death penalty...too bad I was given a death sentence for being innocent and defenseless.

My family made the mistake of being white in a 73% non-white neighborhood, but my murder was not ruled a Hate Crime. Nor did President Obama take so much as a single moment to acknowledge my murder.

I am one of the youngest murder victims in our Nation's hist...ory, but the media doesn't care to cover the story of my tragic demise, President Obama has no children who could possibly look like me - so he doesn't care and the media doesn't care because my story is not interesting enough to bring them ratings so they can sell commercial time slots.

There is not a white equivalent of Al Sharpton because if there was he would be declared racist, so there is no one rushing to Brunswick GA to demand justice for me. There is no White Panther party to put a bounty on the lives of those who murdered me. I have no voice, I have no representation and unlike those who shot me in the face while I sat innocently in my stroller - I no longer have my life.
So while you are seeking justice for Trayvon, please remember to seek justice for me too. Tell your friends about me, tell you families, get tee shirts with my face on them and make the world pay attention, just like you did for Trayvon.
    ...

This child was did not hit the person pulling the trigger in the face or sit on him and and bash his head into the sidewalk. This IS a hate crime, and me must address hate crimes - EVEN those generated from the black community. Please expose it. Thank you.

    Gov. Mike,

Your commentary is right on the money. I believe the media is a major part of the blame for the escalation of racial tension concerning this case. If there are in fact major race riots, then the liberal mainstream media (NBC,MSNBC,CNN,etc.) need to be sued heavily. Am I wrong, or is the media just suppose to report the facts of the story, not guide people to do bad things? Maybe I'll be lucky and the Good Lord will call me home prior to seeing this country fall apart.
