Statement by Learn Our History CEO Bradley Saft

August 4, 2011

Everyone at Learn Our History was deeply shocked and saddened by MSNBC's coverage of our company over the past few days which focused not on our company's mission of educating, but rather only on potential profits. Unfortunately MSNBC did not contact Learn Our History or any of its representatives for the story, nor did Martin Bashir disclose his own previous involvement in a documentary project about the events of 9/11 and whether or not he felt he was "cashing in" on the tragedy. The resulting piece, which was filled with shocking inaccuracies and false statements, has been picked up in news organizations around the country. It is my feeling that Mr. Bashir and the MSNBC Network owes Governor Huckabee, myself, our employees, and those who were deliberately misled about our project – such as Jim Riches– an apology and the opportunity to set the record straight.

Now the facts: Our company is developing an entire series of historical videos, the contents of which are prepared by a distinguished panel of educational experts. These animated videos are geared toward children to teach them about important events and people in America’s history – like World War II, the American Revolution, Ronald Reagan, and September 11th – which are the first of dozens which will be released in coming months.

September 11th was the largest terrorist attack on American soil in history and simply cannot be left out as such. The purpose of Learn Our History is to educate children in a creative way about the history of the United States, and the events on 9/11 and the country’s reaction to them are very much a part of that history. It’s a difficult topic to explain to children, but we feel it is important to help them begin to understand what happened on that tragic day. We are releasing this video now because children will be having a lot of questions about 9/11 and we felt it appropriate to offer this film as a tool parents can use to address those questions in a way kids can understand. It is a resource to be used at the discretion of parents to sensitively educate children about these topics.

On a personal note, I find it dishonest and unfair that MSNBC and Mr. Bashir deliberately misinformed and took advantage of Jim Riches' grief over his fallen son, a firefighter, to sensationalize this story. He also left out the fact that part of the proceeds from video sales are being donated to select charities serving 9/11 victims and their families. Further, it is absurd that he attempted to paint Governor Huckabee as taking advantage of the firefighters, when in fact his own father was a career firefighter, and Governor Huckabee has a long record both in office and as a private citizen of supporting firefighters and other first responders.

Sadly, Mr. Bashir – and the other reporters such as Lawrence O’Donnell – who followed suit – pulled the one episode of a series of historical films out of context and we truly wish he would have attempted to contact us about the topic before putting together a libelous hatchet job like he did earlier this week.

We wonder whether Mr. Bashir would take issue with every book publisher that includes 9/11 as a topic? Or with MSNBC for airing commercials during its upcoming specials about the 10th anniversary of 9/11? Did Mr. Bashir ask Jim Riches his position on whether MSNBC should donate all such proceeds to charity?

It seems quite clear that Mr. Bashir's unreasonable attack is nothing more than a politically motivated assault designed to embarrass and intimidate Governor Huckabee because Mr. Bashir is personally opposed to the idea that a principled conservative is taking the lead in teaching our nation's children about the defining events of our age.

We founded our company because we believe and fear that media members such as MSNBC seek to control not only the media but also the education of our nation's young people and do not welcome other voices into the conversation. Mr. Bashir, you are proving us right.

Friday morning, Governor Huckabee will be on “America’s Newsroom” on the Fox News Channel during the 10:00am ET hour.

Friday night, Governor Huckabee will be on “On the Record with Greta Van Susteren” on the Fox News Channel at 10pm ET.  Be sure to tune in!

Saturday morning he’ll be on “Fox and Friends” on the Fox News Channel at 8:30am ET.

And don’t forget to tune in to “Huckabee” Saturday and Sunday nights at 8:00pm ET

Jennings Osborne

My good friend and fishing buddy Jennings Osborne was known for his extravagance in Christmas lights, free barbecue plates the size of a Buick that he joyfully gave away to people who had been devastated by tornadoes or tragedies, and his fireworks displays.  He advocated that people should commit "random acts  of kindness," but they weren't empty words for Jennings and his family.  Many things he did publicly so that anyone regardless of who they were could enjoy, such as the fireworks, food, and festive lights, but what most people don't know is that he practiced what he preached and did most of his charitable deeds privately and anonymously.  His subdued demeanor belied his sharp, intelligent, and sometimes outrageous sense of humor. He was a joy to be with because when he said something, it was worth listening to and usually worth laughing about.  Above all, he loved his family.  His devotion to Mitzi and his beloved daughter Breezy was unmistakable and unmatched.  He was truly one of the most selfless people I've ever known.  He loved all kinds of people except had little patience for people who were mean, cynical, or who thought themselves superior to others.  I often said that Jennings was like a little boy who never had candy who one day bought the candy store and found his greatest joy in giving candy to kids who were like he once was and couldn't afford it.  His generosity to others was never about calling attention to himself.  It was about wanting to make people know they are loved.  It was one of the ways he expressed God's love.  He had the biggest heart in the world.  He used it mostly for others.  It finally gave out.  Anyone who really knew him will remember him as an humble and caring man who loved God, loved his family, loved his work, loved life, and loved to see joy in others.  I already miss him.
