It seems that neither party will ever learn their lesson about appointing independent counsels to investigate scandals. It always seems like a great way to look nonpartisan and just interested in the facts while torpedoing your political opponent with an investigator who is usually unbound by any constraints, and who can’t be fired without it looking like an attempt to obstruct justice that can be used as grounds for impeachment. And so, we get independent counsel investigations that drag on for years, wander hither and yon, cost millions, destroy a few lives and careers and never seem to achieve what they were originally set up to do. Both sides have been bedeviled by out-of-control special prosecutors, but they forget about that as soon as they have the chance to sic one on the other guy.

It looks as if Democrats may be about to learn that lesson the hard way one more time: Robert Mueller, whom they were cheering when they thought he was going to find Russian collusion evidence to impeach Trump, is now reportedly targeting the Podesta Group, the Democrat-leaning lobbying firm run by Tony Podesta, brother of Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman. Details are at the link.

This is what happens when you cry, “Release the hounds!” and forget that when they’re not on the leash, they can turn on you. If Mueller continues in this direction, I expect Democrats to declare that he’s overstepped his mandate and demand that Trump fire him. Of course, if Trump does, they’ll then accuse him of obstruction of justice and try to impeach him. This is one more reason why everybody in Washington needs to be kept on a short leash.
