Wave a big American flag on the UC Berkeley campus, and you’ll be making yourself a target for lots of highly profane verbal abuse. But wave a big ISIS flag, and virtually everyone who walks by will be okay with it. Most won’t react at all. Those who do will offer support and praise.
Think that’s an exaggeration? Filmmaker Ami Horowitz tried both scenarios himself, waving first one flag and then the other and recording it on film. When he waved the red-white-and-blue and said pro-American things, many passersby made nasty comments about him --- and about America. But when he waved the ISIS flag and said pro-ISIS things, most people seemed to have no problem with it; they simply walked on as if nothing were wrong. Some thanked him. Even after several hours, only one person had complained.
It’s hard to know what motivated the people who displayed quiet acceptance of ISIS on their campus. Either they hate America so much that they appreciate ISIS for hating it, too, or they’re just afraid of getting beheaded.
On the Berkeley campus, I’d suspect it’s the former. Certainly not because they demonstrate bravery –- with their “safe spaces,” these idiots seem like the opposite of brave –- but because they’re so ignorant, they apparently don’t realize that an actual member of ISIS would behead them before they could say “America sucks.”
Here’s the short film Horowitz made. Apologies for the barely-bleeped dirty words that were hurled in his general direction.
