I woke up to some terribly sad news this morning: Fox announced that Alan Colmes has died at 66. No cause has yet been revealed, although he had taken time off recently for private medical issues. I want to convey my deepest condolences and prayers to his family.

Alan was a liberal, so we certainly had different viewpoints, but he was the kind of debate adversary you have to love. In an age when few people remember how to disagree without being disagreeable, he was an authentic and deeply intellectual liberal who actually could articulate his point of view instead of just spewing hateful venom. He had an amazing sense of humor. I did his radio show often because I truly enjoyed being with him. He was more fun than some crotchety conservatives I’ve dealt with. He was smart, witty and fair. He never backed up, but always backed up his views.

He will be greatly missed by his friends and colleagues. Even those colleagues with whom he loved to argue considered him their friend. That’s a rare thing these days, and a measure of the kind of man he was. Rest in peace.
