The current big Inside-the-Beltway distraction from doing the people's business is all the Democratic “outrage” at House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes for informing President Trump that he had seen intelligence reports clearly showing that Trump and his team had been monitored and that information illegally leaked. The Committee’s ranking Democrat, Adam Schiff, then took to the cameras to suggest that Nunes was leaking intelligence information and should be investigated (you can always tell when Democrats are out of power: they demand so many investigations that we end up investigating the investigators). And now, he’s railing about Nunes cancelling an open Committee session in which former Acting Attorney General Sally Yates was set to testify.
First of all, it’s nice to see that the party that wanted Hillary Clinton to be President is suddenly so concerned with prosecuting the leaking of classified information. But apparently, only classified information that helps Trump, not that harms him. What Nunes told Trump and the public had nothing to do with protecting state secrets; it was giving the President a head’s up that someone was monitoring his team and illegally leaking information to undermine his presidency. I just wish Rep. Schiff and the other Democrats were half as concerned about all those illegal leaks as they are about Rep. Nunes leaking about the illegal leaks. Methinks they doth protest too much.
Still, for what it’s worth, I agree that at this point, we should appoint an independent investigator, largely because the atmosphere in Congress, and in Washington in general, is so poisoned by partisanship that we can’t depend on the current crop of officeholders to be fair and conduct themselves like responsible adults. Appoint some well-respected retired office holder, like former Attorney General John Ashcroft, who will ferret out the truth wherever it leads and hold lawbreakers to account, no matter how high it goes. As for canceling the testimony by Sally Yates, I agree with that. What would be served by giving yet another public forum to an openly anti-Trump partisan who was fired for insubordination for refusing to uphold her boss’ immigration policy? If Democrats want to toss peanuts to their dancing bear, let them do it on their own time.
