Today's Commentary:  The fight to save a cross -- New Clinton probe begins -- CBC update

A federal judge in Pensacola, Florida, has ordered a 30-foot cross that was erected by the Jaycees in Bayview Park in 1969 (replacing a wooden one that had been there since 1941) to be removed within 30 days after precisely four people backed by two atheist groups filed a complaint. The judge acknowledged that the cross had wide public support and that the Founders would have found this lawsuit “absurd,” and if he were ruling on a blank slate, he would leave it alone. But “the law is the law,” and he was forced by precedent to order it removed as a purely religious symbol on public property.

A spokeswoman for one of the humanist groups that filed the lawsuit said, "The cross was totally unavoidable to park patrons” (did they continually bump into it?) “and to have citizens foot the bill for such a religious symbol is both unfair and unconstitutional.” Question: what bill? It was a gift from the Jaycees that had been standing in the park for 48 years. Moving it out of the park will generate a bill that citizens will have to foot. Perhaps the four atheists whose hearts bleed so for the poor beleaguered taxpayers would like to cover that bill, since they’re the only ones who were offended and they’re the reason it has to be relocated.

Meanwhile, you might want to visit Arlington National Cemetery and pay your respects to all the fallen heroes before someone files a lawsuit demanding that all the thousands of crosses on public land be removed from their graves.

New Clinton probe begins

By Mike Huckabee

Some things are eternal: the seasons change, the tide goes in and out, and the Clintons will forever be under some sort of ethics investigation. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles Grassley confirmed to Fox News that the State Department has launched a formal inquiry into Hillary Clinton’s email practices while his own committee is looking into allegations that as Secretary of State, she interfered in a Bangladeshi corruption investigation on behalf of a big Clinton Foundation donor.

A Clinton spokesman replied, “Nothing’s been more thoroughly dissected. It’s over. Case closed. Literally.” But while the case may have been shoved into the closet by the previous Administration, it wasn't closed. A spokesman for the watchdog group Judicial Watch pointed to the legal consequences others have faced for far less serious infractions, saying, “This flagrant double standard for the gang that exposed top secret code-word material to the Russians, Chinese and others is both offensive and deeply corrosive to the intelligence community. There is no better evidence that when it comes to Hillary Clinton and her coterie, laws are for the little people.” I’d add that with the ongoing investigation of the current Administration for alleged collusion and obstruction, for which there’s still no evidence whatsoever, laws apply double for billionaires --- but only if they’re Republican office holders.

CBC update

By Mike Huckabee

As a candidate, President Trump passionately denounced the way minorities in inner cities are forced to attend substandard public schools, deal with high crime and be denied good job opportunities. He promised to make it a priority to fix that. So he met with the Congressional Black Caucus in March, and he just extended an invitation to the entire CBC to meet with him again at the White House. And they rejected the invitation.

The CBC is reportedly angry that Trump hasn’t acted on their policy requests from March yet (odd, since there’s certainly been nothing to distract him from getting important work done in the past few months), and they’re afraid he might use the meeting for a photo op to boost his standing with black voters.

It seems to me that if they really cared about helping the people who sent them to Congress, they’d go find out what the President wants to talk to them about. I highly doubt that he invited them to meet with him just to boost his standing with black voters, but the CBC’s refusal even to accept the invitation should definitely lower their standing with black voters.
