Today's Commentary --- General Mattis to retire-- Ainsworth:  VOGUE trashes Christmas portrait of First Couple -- The Shutdown battle -- GoFundMe Border Wall -- The Baltic Experience 2019 -- Good recap -- Best gift book of Christmas -- Evening Edition -- Daily Verse

Gen. James Mattis announced that he is retiring as Secretary of Defense in February.  This will mark a serious loss to the Administration, as he has been one of the best Defense Secretaries in history.  I hope President Trump can find a replacement who has the same level of military experience, candor, character and mutual respect with the troops, but that will be a very tall order.

In Mattis’ gracious resignation letter, he urged the President to be "resolute and unambiguous" in approaching countries with strategic differences, citing China and Russia, and said he has “the right to have a Secretary of Defense whose views are better aligned with yours on these and other subjects.”

Ainsworth: VOGUE trashes Christmas portrait of First Couple

By Mike Huckabee

The “progressive” New Yawk-ish elites at VOGUE magazine have done it again.  In the spirit of Christmas, they're running a story headlined “What’s Up With This Year’s Surreal White House Portrait,” slamming not just the Trumps’ official Christmas portrait, but them personally, as a couple.

First, in case you haven’t seen the portrait, let me say that it is beautiful.  The President wears a classic tux, and Melania shimmers in an elegant white dress with high neck and long fitted sleeves.  The background is a hall in the White House lined with traditional pine trees decorated in all-red ornaments and thousands of tiny white lights.  Classic.  It’s really stunning.

If Barack and Michelle had been pictured in exactly the same way, the editors at VOGUE would be falling to their knees in praise and writing epic poems to the portrait’s rapturous beauty.  But with Donald and Melania, they are relentless in their petty, hyper-partisan criticism.

The Shutdown battle

By Mike Huckabee

The battle over a temporary funding bill/government shutdown/border wall continues to rage in Washington.  Here’s where it stands at this writing: the House voted 217-185 (seven Republicans joined all the Democrats in opposition) to pass a temporary funding bill to keep the government running until February, with $5.7 billion for a border wall included.  It came after President Trump vowed that he would not sign any funding bill that didn’t include the wall.

Now it goes to the Senate where it’s certain not to pass because it’s one of those bills that for some reason requires 60 votes to overcome a filibuster threat, and all the Democrats and a couple of Republicans will oppose it.  So at the moment, it appears that there will be a government shutdown, although as we’ve learned in the past week, that situation could change faster than Jilly Lube can change your oil.

One thing worth pointing out: if there is a government shutdown, it will be because Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer would rather shut down the government than provide funding for border security that is wanted by a growing plurality of Americans.  So although Democrats have been calling it a “Trump shutdown” since before there was even any hint of a shutdown, if it does shut down, it will be a “Schumer shutdown,” since he and his Party are the ones who are really holding up funding over one issue that would be a tiny fraction of the $4.4 trillion annual budget.

I should add that it has provided some much-needed comic relief to hear so many liberal boosters of massive government spending pretend to oppose a wall because $5 billion would be an irresponsible waste of taxpayer money.  For instance, Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez blasted it as a waste of money that could be better spent on things like green jobs or free college-for-all.  In short, “Don’t waste tax money on Trump’s expensive pet project!  Waste it on my exponentially-more-expensive pet project!”

It’s also a little much to ask us to believe that building a wall to secure the border would offend Democrats’ tight-fisted stewardship of the Treasury when it comes on the same day that we learn that the government gave nearly $365,000 of our tax money to Louis Farrakhan’s racist and anti-Semitic church, the Nation of Islam, to teach “religious study programs” to prison inmates.

Personally, I think it may be time to build a big, beautiful, barbed-wire-topped wall between liberals and our tax money.

GoFundMe page for the border wall

By Mike Huckabee

If Congress won’t fund a border wall, there might be another source of funds: heroic war veteran and triple amputee Brian Kolfage got fed up with the stalling and started a GoFundMe page where US citizens could contribute to help pay for the wall directly.  The goal is $1 billion, which sounds unlikely, but after less than a week, pledges have already topped $11 million.

However, it’s possible Kolflage might have to refund the donors’ money due to legal technicalities.  GoFundMe requires that all money raised be used for the purpose intended.  But federal law says that any funds given to the government can only go into the general fund.  Rep. Bob Goodlatte, chair of the House Judiciary Committee, called the campaign “admirable,” but said, “Obviously, we can’t let citizens raise money and say, ‘The government will spend my money on this purpose.’ ”

He’s right: we used to have something that insured that money we gave the government was spent on things the citizens wanted.  It was called “Congress.”  But these days, that mostly seems to be in the business of spending our money and our kids’ money and our grandkids’ money only on things that none of us want.

Good recap

By Mike Huckabee

For those who’ve gotten a little lost in the weeds with all the revelations and machinations involved in the FBI-Mueller-Dossier-Russian collusion maze, this is a good recap from someone with a unique perspective.  Chris Farrell is the director of investigations and research for Judicial Watch and a former counterintelligence case officer himself, so he knows the proper terminology and procedures for such cases and can spot the corrupt ways in which they’ve been twisted to achieve the desired results.

After assessing everything he’s seen over the past two years, he arrives at a brutal conclusion.  His remedy for restoring public trust in federal law enforcement and equal justice under the law would require dissolving the FBI as it now exists and replacing it with a new organization where all the good, honest, professional agents can be transferred.  Yes, the rot from the head really is that bad, in his expert opinion.  Read it all at the link.

Best gift book of Christmas

By Mike Huckabee

Here’s a scary sign for the health of the publishing industry, and for literacy in general: Barnes and Noble released its annual list of the 20 best holiday gift ideas.  It includes mittens, a Buddha board, Mickey Mouse speakers, several kinds of socks…and only one book.

Even worse, it suggests that the people at Barnes & Noble don’t even know what the best gift book of Christmas 2018 really is:

"Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."

I feel like Rip Ann Van Winkle (I'm a female) -- I woke up this morning and listened ad nauseum to Chuck Schumer. Did he become President of the USA while I was asleep? He is calling the shots on what HE and the DEMS want and added more and more insults and negatives to the work the real President is trying to do - protect us. We applaud Donald J Trump for his vision of America - I'm sure if any readers watch and listen to what Schumer (Imaginary President) and Pelosi (Ready for Old Folks' Home) want for this country - it is a scary thought that some Americans listen to them. Schumer & Company want their way like Kindergarteners do for THEIR benefit. Not USA's. Trump is draining the swamp - like he said.
