It’s been an extraordinary week in Washington, watching so many political rivals of both parties set aside partisanship to honor the late President George H.W. Bush.  Despite his notorious primary battle with Jeb Bush, President Trump not only attended the elder Bush’s funeral, he went out of his way to welcome and accommodate the family, from providing Air Force One to transport Bush’s body to inviting the Bush family to stay at Blair House, the presidential guest house, and giving them a personal tour of the White House.
Meanwhile, reporters alternated their coverage of the funeral between lamenting the passing of Bush’s ability to be gracious and bipartisan, and relentlessly slamming Trump for any little thing that might be interpreted negatively. Like CNN…

So much breaking news

By Mike Huckabee

Friday afternoons are typically the time for news dumps –- thousands of pages of emails and such –- but this Friday brought us so much breaking news concerning the FBI and special counsel that it’s a challenge to sort it all out.  Most news outlets aren’t bothering to sort, though, preferring instead to get hysterical and sensationalize any report that even hints the President is in hot water.

Don’t buy it.  We’re getting a clearer picture of what Russians were trying to do to interfere in our election (and that was supposed to be the purpose of the investigation, right?), but from what I’ve seen, Trump is not implicated at all.  You’d never know that from looking at mainstream media, though.

Teacher Fired

By Mike Huckabee

Virginia’s West Point High School board voted 5-0 to fire French teacher Peter Vlaming for committing the unpardonable thought crime of referring to a biological female student as “she.”

Of course, it’s more complicated than that, although not any more rational.  The student “identifies” as male, so Vlaming was accused of “misgendering” him or xir or whatever pronoun…the student prefers.  But Vlaming denies any animosity: he says that as a devout Christian, his religious beliefs bar him from referring to a female as a male, so he simply didn’t use any pronouns in addressing the student.  But he did refer to…the student on one occasion as “she,” which…the student (wow, a world without pronouns gets tiresome!) claims made…the student feel “singled out,” creating a “hostile learning environment for...the student.  Vlaming claims it was a one-time slip of the tongue (as if anyone would ever refer to a biological female as “she” for any reason other than hate and malice!)

Making it even more like an episode of “The Twilight Zone,” the school has no specific policy on gender preference pronoun use, which means the board voted unanimously to fire him for violating a policy that doesn’t exist.

I’m happy to report that numerous parents and teachers are taking Vlaming’s side (funny how…the student…claims to feel so threatened by being singled out for attention, yet has turned a one-syllable slip of the tongue in a high school classroom into a national news story.) I’m also happy to note that Vlaming has engaged an attorney, who cited a policy that actually is written down.  It’s known as the First Amendment, and it certifies that free speech and the right to practice your religious faith without fear of reprisal outweighs the government’s power to tell you which pronouns to use.

A Tale of Two Standards

By Mike Huckabee

A Tale of Two Standards:

1.  As a businessman with no prior political experience, President Trump sometimes tweets things that would be fine for someone in the private sector to say, but that violate some rule, written or unwritten, for what politicians are supposed to say.

Democratic reaction:  “Outrage! Investigation!! Special counsel!!! Impeachment!!!! PRISON!!!!!”

2.  “Democratic” socialist Representative-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweets a threat against the President’s son to target him with House subpoenas because she doesn’t like a meme he tweeted.  She backpedals after it’s pointed out that this is a clear violation of House ethics regulations against abuse of power and targeting citizens for exercising their free speech rights.

Democratic reaction: “Hey, she’s a newcomer to politics!  She didn’t know any better!  She didn’t mean any harm! It wasn’t really even a ‘threat!’  Say, why don’t you Republicans just chill out and quit being mean to her?!”

I think this proves how unfair it is to accuse the left of having no ethical standards.  In fact, they have so many ethical standards, it’s enough to make two completely different sets.

Baby names

By Mike Huckabee

According to a new survey on baby names, the popularity of “Melania” has jumped by 227% since 2015, and the popularity of “Ivanka” is up by 362%.  Granted, they probably started from a pretty low baseline, but that’s still an interesting counterpoint to the media’s never-ending assault on Melania and Ivanka Trump.

I can imagine a time 20 or so years from now, when half the young women in America are named either Melania or Ivanka.  I wonder if any women’s magazine will finally put either of them on its cover then?

Best gift book of Christmas

By Mike Huckabee

Here’s a scary sign for the health of the publishing industry, and for literacy in general: Barnes and Noble released its annual list of the 20 best holiday gift ideas.  It includes mittens, a Buddha board, Mickey Mouse speakers, several kinds of socks…and only one book.

Even worse, it suggests that the people at Barnes & Noble don’t even know what the best gift book of Christmas 2018 really is:
