El Paso school officials under fire

Officials at a high school in El Paso, Texas, are under fire for allowing students to leave class Friday as part of a nationwide anti-gun protest, during which one student was struck by a car and killed.

This terrible tragedy has caused angry parents and others to accuse the school of allowing favored PC politics on guns to override its responsibility to keep students safe. Some even say there’s “blood on the hands” of the school officials, just as the NRA has been blamed for kids dying in school shootings. Naturally, school officials don’t like being blamed for deaths that they were not directly responsible for. They claim the students were safely transported to the stadium for the protest, but this student apparently used the event as an excuse to sneak away and meet friends in the park, and he was killed when he tried to cross a highway illegally.

That may be true, but the fact remains that if they had not allowed students to leave class for a politically-motivated event, that student would not have been on the highway and he would still be alive. And frankly, they have no excuse for not knowing they were endangering the students.

I pointed out in my commentaries three weeks ago that according to CDC statistics, Americans are three times more likely to die in a car crash than to be murdered by someone with a gun. If you filter out such incidents as criminal gang members shooting each other and count only the type of shootings the students were protesting – mass shootings of innocents, such as school shootings – the chances of dying in a traffic accident are 1,000 times greater. (Side note: just letting them out of the building might expose them to stinging insects, which pose a greater risk of death statistically than mass shootings.)

So even if the El Paso school officials intended to put the kids on school buses and drive them somewhere safe to protest school shootings, they still exposed them to a danger of death 1,000 times greater than their chances of being a victim of a school shooting.

To use the exact same reasoning that the left employs toward the NRA, I have to ask all school officials who allow students to leave the relative safety of the classroom to go to anti-gun protests:

“Why do you prioritize your political agenda about guns over the safety of our children? Why do you want children to die?”

    My prayers are for the parents and family of the child who was killed - their lives will never be the same. It is a terrible tragedy.

    The purpose of a school should be to produce literate young adults, nothing more. However, they have been used as instruments of social engineering since the 1960's and it really needs to stop. State legislatures need to step in and return public schools to primary mission and have them focus on literacy. I'm praying that a movement like this sweeps our nation, and I can think of no one better to champion it than Governor Mike Huckabee. P.S. - literacy in music would be a good thing too.

    Maybe these activists should try to outlaw cars that hit people. It would make about as much sense as trying to abolish our Second Amendment rights.

    Ouch May the truth hurt. What objective in what lesson plan was used to have the students attend an anti-gun protest. Perhaps if the schools taught what the Constitution and Amendments are and why it is written the way it is we would have fewer students protesting something they really have no idea about.

    I wonder how many parents would have been up in arms if their children were not allowed to attend this protest? Because you know there are those out there. Or, perhaps any being upset if the students weren't allowed would have been instigated and powered by the anti-gun activists. Maybe the activists should schedule their "student led" protests on weekends where the students could actually be attending classes. Then the pressures would not be put on the schools to say yea or nay. And, in these and other protests, you know there were students who didn't really attend the protests, but used the occasion as a way to get out of class, doing what they want while parents and school officials think they are at the rallies.
