At this writing, the Senate Judiciary Committee has yet to vote on Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court nomination. That’s scheduled for 1:30 p.m. EST. It’s not clear yet whether his testimony swayed enough fence-straddlers to put him over the top, but it’s looking more positive for him after members heard from both sides and gauged public reaction. You can tell the Democrats sensed defeat because their attack went from “he’s a drunken sexual predator” to “he’s visibly angry at being falsely branded a drunken sexual predator so he doesn’t have the right temperament for the job.” There were also some attempts online to denigrate him as weak for showing his emotions from the same people who’ve spent the past few years telling us that not showing emotions is a sign of “toxic masculinity.”
The Kavanaugh haters are gonna hate, of course, but most fair-minded observers saw that while both Dr. Ford and Judge Kavanaugh gave moving, convincing testimony, and it’s only human to feel sympathy for Dr. Ford and what she says she’s gone through, only Kavanaugh offered any real evidence to support his claim of innocence. Those hoping that Ford would present something new and convincing were disappointed that she still gave no details that might be useful in investigating her claims, and that several of her statements contradicted previous statements and sparked more questions.
For those who kept insisting that we must believe the woman no matter what, I would point out that feminism has given us a term to describe people who believe someone with no evidence over someone with evidence, simply because we prefer the first person’s gender. That term isn’t “enlightened” or “woke.” It’s “sexist.“
The Democrats on the Committee did not help Dr. Ford’s case nor their own. They overreached so much that they must have back strain today. I get the sense that they only made most of the public feel more sympathetic toward Kavanaugh with their attempts to imply that because he liked a few beers in high school, he must be a blackout drunk who just doesn’t remember that he’s a sexual predator.
Let us all hope that we never again see a moment in our government as cringingly juvenile as a United States Senator pressing a Supreme Court nominee on what the dark, hidden meaning might be in a flatulence joke from his 36-year-old high school yearbook that he didn’t even write. As Kavanaugh pointed out, in that era, the editors thought it was funny to emulate “Animal House,” "Caddyshack" and "Fast Times at Ridgemont High."
And I pray the Lord will spare me ever again having to endure watching Richard “Vietnam war hero” Blumenthal pass judgement on anyone else’s credibility.
By the time we got to Cory “Spartacus” Booker trying to rack up some Presidential campaign ad footage by repeatedly using the phrase “her truth” (he’d apparently surrendered completely on the judicial concept of trying to ascertain “THE truth”) and demanding to know if Kavanaugh wished Ford hadn’t made this accusation (well, duh!), the entire proceeding had degenerated from tragedy to farce to that really bad final sketch that runs at the end of every “Saturday Night Live.”
What became abundantly clear through this sorry proceeding was the Democrats were true to their word: they would literally stop at nothing to prevent President Trump from appointing a Constitutionalist Justice to the Supreme Court. If that meant character assassination, destroying the nominee’s life and reputation, endangering his family, traumatizing his wife and children, beclowning themselves, throwing their own alleged sexual assault victim/witness under the bus, and shredding due process rights and the presumption of innocence, then so be it.
Lindsay Graham hit the nail on the head when he said it showed that they would do anything to stay in power, and it showed why they should not be in power. Let’s hope that a lot of voters also got that message and will send it to the Democrats at the polls.
