I was going to write a wrap-up of 2018, but then I realized that I’d already done that when I wrote a wrap-up of 2016. That’s because so many people who major voices in the media or politics have spent the past two years living in a time loop, unable to move forward from that shocking moment over two years ago when they discovered that Americans might actually not want a President who calls them sexist, racist, homophobic, Islamophobic, xenophobic deplorables to their faces.

In my New Year’s Day message for 2017, this is what I wrote:

”I hope you’re not nursing a hangover from last night. But if you are, at least take solace in knowing that the long national binge drunk that was 2016 is blessedly over. Last year saw Americans battered by a politicized media and over a billion dollars in attack ads designed to drive us all further apart and into warring fiefdoms. While far too many Americans remain 'bitter clingers,' refusing to stop fighting a battle that was over in November, let’s hope they’ll come to realize how much of that anger and animosity they feel was ginned up by political theater, invented by consultants who profit and gain power from fomenting divisiveness.

"Person of the year"

By Mike Huckabee

I couldn’t possibly agree more with Frontpage magazine’s choice of their “Person of the Year” for 2018.  Unlike with Time magazine, not only is this title an honor, but their choice to receive it richly deserves it.  And I don’t just say that because she’s my daughter.

News you might have missed

By Mike Huckabee

Some more news to catch you up to date:

President Trump personally intervened to make sure the Coast Guard got paid during the government shutdown…

Nancy Pelosi announced plans to form a “Climate Crisis Committee” to combat CO2 emissions after flying thousands of miles to a luxurious Hawaiian resort…

Fake news

By Mike Huckabee

Having been gone a week, there’s lots of “fake news” to catch you up on.  For instance…

The much-ballyhooed “Trump official” who reportedly resigned in outrage over Trump’s decision to withdraw our troops from Syria was actually the same Obama holdover who personally oversaw sending that planeload of cash to Iran and who was set to leave in February anyway…

NBC News, under criticism, finally backed down from its claim that President Trump snubbed the troops by not visiting them for Christmas, after it was revealed that he and Melania did make a secret trip to Iraq the day after Christmas.

NBC tried to finesse its blunder by faulting Trump for not visiting the troops before or on Christmas Day, a distinction that the troops, who welcomed him warmly, seem not to give a flying fig about.

"The Waste Report"

By Mike Huckabee

Sen. Rand Paul released his 2018 edition of “The Waste Report,” his annual round-up of the most egregious wastes of taxpayer money.   They included $10 million to support tourism in Egypt, $50,000 to teach female entrepreneurs in India how to “vlog,” $200,000 to put on plays in Afghanistan; and from the science grants at the NIH, over $2.4 million to study daydreaming, nearly $76,000 to blow leaf blowers at lizards, and $874,503 to study the sex habits of quails on cocaine.  I think the NIH grants are also being handed out by quails on cocaine.

AOC's Top 7 political blunders

By Mike Huckabee

Townhall’s Beth Bauman performed a herculean feat of editing by narrowing down Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Top 7 Political Blunders of the Year (this doesn’t even include her suggestion that Joseph, Mary and the Baby Jesus were refugees instead of people being forced to go to ridiculous lengths to comply with the government’s tax laws, which you’d think she’d support.)

Year in review

By Mike Huckabee

Finally, because I know you could use a laugh or two right now, here’s humorist Dave Barry’s year in review column for 2018.  My favorite line: In February, the Chinese space station “plunges back to Earth and, in a worst-case outcome, fails to land on attorney Michael Avenatti, thus enabling him to continue appearing on CNN more often than the Geico gecko.”

Richard Overton RIP

By Mike Huckabee

America’s oldest military veteran, World War II vet Richard Overton, died last Thursday in Texas at 112.  He was also believed to be the oldest living American.  A beloved local character in Austin, he was famous for his sense of humor and credited his long life to God, whiskey and his 12 daily cigars.  His advice for having a long life: “Keep living, don’t die.”  I’m sorry he couldn’t keep taking his own advice even longer, but he lived a remarkable, as well as remarkably long, life.  Click the link to read more.

Daily Verse

"Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil."

– 1 Corinthians 13:4-5
