Today's Commentary --- Hey, FBI: THIS is what collusion with Russia looks like! -- RIP Shirley Boone -- The shutdown continues -- Long-overdue News -- Michael Cohen to testify before Democrat-led House committee -- The Oscars security -- Today’s Must-Read, Edge-Of-Your-Seat Story -- Dick Durbin and the wall -- Evening Edition -- Daily Verse

We learned last week from the New York Times that the FBI actually opened an inquiry into President Trump –- not candidate Trump, but sitting President Trump --- because of words and behavior that caused them to suspect he was working as an agent of Russia. Seems to me it didn’t take much of anything at all for them to levy this outrageous charge; one of their flimsy reasons was the obvious (and funny) joke Trump had made about Russia finding Hillary’s “lost” 33,000 emails. This was very obviously just a flip remark designed to comment on Hillary’s “carelessness” (to be accurate, her criminal negligence and destruction of evidence) regarding many thousands of deleted emails, yet it suggested nothing about that to FBI top brass, as they refused to acknowledge her lawlessness. To frothing-at-the-mouth anti-Trumpers like James Comey and former CIA Director John Brennan, he was making a dead-serious request of his comrade Vladimir.

This alone shows they have flipped out. One thing about leftists: if they ever did have a sense of humor, they have definitely lost it. In fact, I remember making a similar joke about the Russians being able to find Hillary’s emails, even before Trump did. It’s so obvious --- what comedy writers call “low-hanging fruit.”

RIP Shirley Boone

By Mike Huckabee

My condolences to Pat Boone on the death of his delightful wife, Shirley.  She passed away Friday at their home in Beverly Hills at age 84.  Pat and Shirley Boone are two of the most genuinely decent people I’ve ever known. I have great memories of being in Israel with them several times and of many events together.

Pat said, “I’ve parted with my better half for a little while … but we don’t die, we just move on to another place, and today was moving day.  She’s changed her address is all and moved to a different mansion that I expect to join her in one day. I’m very confident of that.”

God bless them!

The shutdown continues

By Mike Huckabee

The government is still partially shut down, but Congress members are returning to work.  The “intransigent” President Trump was waiting all weekend to negotiate with Democrats if they’d bothered to show up, but they had better things to do, like jet to Puerto Rico and see the "Hamilton" musical. They could probably offer the performers lessons on how to give the people a song and dance.

https://www.westernjournal.com/ct/democrats-kick-back-puerto-rico-watch-hamilton-shutdown-rages/

Meanwhile, a new ABC News/Washington Post poll shows that public opinion is not moving in the direction liberals hoped. While a majority of Americans still oppose the border wall and blame Trump and the Republicans for the shutdown (no surprise, considering the hysterical, one-sided press coverage), that’s gradually changing, as support for the wall has risen by 8 points since last year, and opposition has dropped by 9 points.

If that doesn’t convince Democrats to give Trump the relatively small amount he’s requesting, maybe this will: the same poll found that despite all the apocalyptic rhetoric about the government shutdown, only 18% of Americans in the poll said they’ve been personally inconvenienced, and only seven percent called it a “major inconvenience.”

Democrats should reconsider the wisdom of giving taxpayers a few more weeks to ponder why a trillion dollars a year in debt is being ladled onto their grandchildren to pay for a lot of government that can shut down and hardly anyone notices it’s gone.

Long-overdue News

By Mike Huckabee

The Trump Administration has issued proposed new guidelines for the Department of Veterans Affairs that would redirect billions of dollars to allow veterans to receive care from private hospitals and clinics.  That would give relief to veterans who have faced unconscionable waits and denials of care at VA hospitals.

Opponents argue that this will divert funds from the VA system and from programs that are specifically designed for veterans’ needs and are already strapped due to demand, such as PTSD treatment.  I have two responses to that:

1.  I don’t care about the “system.”  The system exists to help veterans survive, not the other way around.  If the system is failing to do the job, then fix it or replace it, but don’t let veterans suffer to preserve the “system,” which is what we’ve seen in recent years with bureaucrats allowing veterans to die while waiting for care, then covering it up.

2.  If we need more funding for special conditions such as PTSD that the private sector can’t handle, then fund it. Find something to cut if need be (I’m sure there’s plenty in that $4.2 trillion budget), but fund it.  These men and women put their lives and health on the line for us, and we owe them the best of care when they return.  In a world in which too many people think everything is the government’s responsibility, this is one of the few areas that actually is their responsibility.

I’m sure that many liberal politicians will attack this latest V.A. proposal.  I’d love to know how many of them would let themselves or their loved ones sit around suffering for month after month, waiting for care from the government, and never go to a private hospital or clinic.

Michael Cohen to testify before Democrat-led House committee

By Mike Huckabee

Now that the House Oversight Committee is under the control of Congressional Democrats --- Maryland Rep. Elijah Cummings, former ranking Democrat, is the incoming chairman --- former Trump attorney Michael Cohen has agreed to appear in an open hearing (and possibly also a closed-door one) to answer questions before he begins serving his prison sentence.

In a statement, Cummings thanked Cohen for agreeing to testify, adding, “I want to make clear that we have no interest in inappropriately interfering with any ongoing criminal investigations, and to that end, we are in the process of consulting with Special Counsel Mueller’s office.”

The Oscars security

By Mike Huckabee

The Oscars aren’t until February 24th (and it appears there will be no host, because as some wags put it, there’s nobody in Hollywood morally pure enough to address all those child molesters, rapists and sexual harassers).  But we’re in the middle of “awards season,” and judging from news reports of the rabidly political statements being made by some presenters and winners (no, I don’t watch them, either), the Oscars will no doubt be filled with more anti-Trump, anti-Republican invective, with a timely extra helping of denunciations of the border wall and the idea that we need to strengthen border security.

So just in case you have nothing better to watch that night (like if it’s too dark to see your grass growing), here’s a reminder of last year's intense Oscar-night security.  It involved a staff of over 500, including the LAPD, LAFD, Bomb Squad, Sheriff’s Department, FBI, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Transportation, private security guards, the police canine corps, street closures, reinforced barriers, armored vehicles and sharpshooters on rooftops. I’m sure it will be similar this year, all so that celebrities can safely enter the theater and lecture the rest of us on how walls are unnecessary and useless, guns are bad, and Americans are paranoid and racist for thinking open borders are dangerous.

Today’s Must-Read, Edge-Of-Your-Seat Story

By Mike Huckabee

A snappy Huck’s Hero salute to Army Sgt. Trey Troney.  We all know the military provides recruits with incredible training and life skills.  But when Sgt. Troney happened across a car crash while traveling in Texas, he sprang into action and improvised like a combination of Dr. House and MacGyver to save a man’s life.

Dick Durbin and the wall

By Mike Huckabee

Conservative media outlets have been busy digging into the archives, finding examples of Democrats in years past who denounced the serious problems of illegal immigration and border security and who voted for much higher funding of a border wall than President Trump is asking for, yet they’re now saying the exact opposite.  But amid this horde of hypocrites, at least there’s one Democrat who stands alone.

Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin is one of the most savage critics of Trump’s border wall. That’s par for the course for Democrats these days. But Fox News’ Katie Pavlich unearthed video of Durbin from 12 years ago, back when other Democrats, including then-Sen. Barack Obama, joined Republicans to pass the Secure Fences Act of 2006 in a landslide.  Durbin, however, denounced the bill and voted against it.  So kudos to him for showing a little intellectual and moral consistency…

Oh, wait: Turns out he blasted the 2006 bill because it didn’t provide a long ENOUGH border wall.  He complained that it covered only 700 miles’ worth of the border.

https://www.westernjournal.com/pavlich-digs-video-democrat-saying-proposed-wall-bigger/

Well, I guess my Diogenes-like search for an honest Congressional Democrat continues.  I should have known better when Durbin ended his scathing attack on Trump’s wall as “medieval,” by adding, “Democrats support strong border security.”  That’s what they all reflexively say now, immediately after blasting any suggestion for actually strengthening border security.  If you’re old enough to remember Kevin Nealon’s “Mr. Subliminal” character on “Saturday Night Live,” you might think of him whenever you hear a Democrat follow a denunciation of the border wall by saying, “Democrats support strong border security”:

“And that’s the truth! (I’m lying.)”

Another group of immigrants are heading for our border from Honduras. Why can't we find out exactly who is sponsoring them; providing food, water, equipment, transportation or whatever is needed to travel the distance from their country through Mexico to our border! Are there certain people of means, organizations? If so, why are they not exposed!

I think that those who make it into our country and are permitted to stay should be moved to the communities where Chuck and Nancy live!

My grandmother's came to this country legally! They worked hard; and wanted to be Americans! My maternal grandmother and
grandfather made sure there were American flags all over their wedding cake (at least that's the family history I've been told!)

Our church in our community runs a food bank for people who need help and are from here! We worry about having the funds to cover our expenses as we age and need help! Where does it end?
