Our Daily Verse...
--------------------------
There are a lot of people these days who think government should do everything for everyone (even illegal immigrants.) For many who are overworked and feeling burned out, that can be a very tempting offer. After all, personal responsibility is a lot of work!
But when you look at the staggering debt that’s threatening our grandchildren’s futures and wondering how that came to be, the answer is simple: a lack of personal responsibility. People thinking up things they thought the government ought to do and expecting them to be paid for with somebody else’s money. Thomas Jefferson said, “The government is best that governs least,” but small, cost-efficient government requires a population that’s willing and able largely to govern themselves.
With gratitude,
Mike Huckabee

FEATURED STORIES
Pat Reeder’s 4th of July Jukebox
By Pat Reeder, “Huckabee” writer, record collector, former radio DJ and our resident pop culture historian. Read more at http://www.facebook.com/hollywoodhifibook
I know many of you will be playing patriotic songs this week, everything from “God Bless the USA” to “California Girls” to “Living In America.” But I thought you might like to hear some songs that you don’t hear too often, or ever. Some are hits that don’t get played much anymore, while others are obscure singles and album cuts, but all will make you proud to be an American. I plan to offer two a day, one each in the morning and evening newsletters. Collect the whole set! Here’s the first selection…
“Johnny Freedom” – Johnny Horton
Johnny Horton’s career was cut short at age 35 in a tragic car crash. But he left behind a legacy of great songs, many inspired by historical events, such as “Sink the Bismarck” and the immortal “Battle of New Orleans” (which inspired the hilarious Homer & Jethro parody, “The Battle of Kookamonga.”) For Fourth of July week, here’s a patriotic Johnny Horton tune you might not know, “Johnny Freedom.”
READER RESPONSE to "Medicare For All"
By Mike Huckabee
My commentary about “Medicare For All” as presented by the Democrat presidential candidates brought in some outstanding letters from readers, many of whom are actually on Medicare and know the costs and how it works in practice. (It is NOT free; that would be Medicaid.) I encourage you to check those out.
In the meantime, here is a thoughtful response from someone who served his country for 25 years in the military and earned his enrollment in a select single-payer program called “Tricare For Life.” This seems to be what young American socialists and even immigrants who are not citizens think they are entitled to, by virtue of...existing, I guess. Thank you for your service, sir, and for your wisdom as well.
From Alan S:
As a retired military member, I have Tricare For Life as my secondary to Medicare. I earned that right, which the Congress tried to take away (lifelong medical care). Thanks to folks like Bud Day, USAF BGen retired and deceased, we fought for and retained part of this cancelled promise in the form now of Tricare, for which I pay. I am fortunate to have it, but I do not want to lose it so that those who are not even citizens can have the same healthcare that I gave 25 years of service to "earn.”
Single payer is what I have, but I really did earn it. Those who have individual healthcare plans, now that Obamacare has been modified, are better off than they would be by sharing the “Medicare For All” plan that is proposed by the left. Either one has a price tag, but with the former you have choices. With the latter you have delays, limited services, and no choices.
The giveaways for what I earned or paid for are appealing to a younger generation that has been lied to by my classmates from the 60's that are now college professors. Socialism as defined by the 20+ Democrat candidates, is Christmas year-round. Perhaps these accolytes of the left should spend a few weeks in pleasure spots of the world like Cuba or Venezuela, and see what socialism really is like. Using examples like Denmark or Sweden is a false narrative. They are not socialist nations in the mold of what Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren want.
We who fought for our nation, although no longer in uniform, need to continue to fight for what is real, not for what the left aspires to. I for one, am up for the fight. God Bless America and God Bless You.

Programming note
By Mike Huckabee
This week, I’m giving my research, writing and tech staffers some time off from the headlines for the 4th of July vacation. But never fear, the newsletters will continue! I’ve prepared some non-topical commentaries that I hope you’ll enjoy. And our resident pop culture historian Pat Reeder has created a YouTube 4th of July Jukebox List of great but obscure songs related to patriotism and American history. There will be a new one in each mailing. Please check them out because I know you’ll get a kick out of hearing them.
Of course, if anything major does happen in the news, I’ll step back in and let you know about it. But with Congress safely out of Washington, just lean back and take a break with your family; enjoy the beaches, parks and picnics; and have fun watching some fireworks that are not of the political variety for a change.
From all of us at MikeHuckabee.com, have a happy, safe and patriotic Fourth of July week!

Other news you might have missed...
The bigot who runs "Red Hen" has audacity to lecture on "hospitality." She would have better managed racist lunch counter in 60's. Her hateful treatment of my daughter was despicable! She can't pretend in her op-ed to be credible except on bad manners.

Finally, the commentary this field deserves: Dave Barry looks at the Democratic “debates.”

"But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,"
