President Trump and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer are exchanging accusations over who is responsible for problems her state is having in obtaining supplies to deal with the coronavirus outbreak. You can read the details here if you want, but frankly, I think most Americans aren’t in the mood for partisan fingerpointing. If there are problems, they need to be solved now, and you can argue over blame later.

On a related subject, Gov. Whitmer is not filling her constituents with confidence that she’s putting their best interests ahead of politics by following Nevada Democratic Gov. Steve Sisolak in playing doctor without a license. Both Governors have issued orders banning doctors from the off-label use of hydroxychloroquine, particularly in combination with the drug Azithromycin, which has shown promise in early use in several nations, but which has been under attack by the left as a “fake cure” because President Trump spoke of it positively.

Commentary continues below advertisement

Whitmer’s Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs issued a letter threatening action against the medical licenses of any doctors who prescribe it for the coronavirus, requiring health care providers who learn of a doctor prescribing it to report them to the state, and banning pharmacists from filling prescriptions for it.

Yes, it’s true that we haven’t had years of clinical trials of this drug, but when you’re in a situation where nothing else is working, death may be near and you don’t have years to spend on clinical trials, the decision about what last-ditch drug to try should rest with the doctor and patient, not state or federal bureaucrats. This is why Trump pushed for and signed the “Right To Try Law,” to stop the FDA from “protecting” terminal patients into the grave by denying them experimental treatments until after they’re long dead.

At this link is a first-hand account by a Michigan COVID-19 patient, Jim Santilli, who believes he was hours just away from death when his doctor gave him this treatment, and he began a rapid recovery. You can imagine how he feels about his Governor banning doctors from even trying it:

Santilli writes, “This is unacceptable and I’m confident Governor Whitmer, and her administration, will be responsible for many deaths and much suffering. I highly recommend she stop the politics, and not discourage doctors from using treatment they believe may work.”

While some early studies of the drug have shown great promise, there’s no proof that it’s a magic bullet. There are flaws in the studies, conflicting results, and potential side effects. You can read more about them in this article:

And here’s the latest, released just last night: French professor Dr. Didier Reoult released the results of a second study that repeated the positive findings of his first trial use of Hydroxychloroquine (plaquenil) and Azithromycin on 36 COVID-19 patients. The latest study of 80 patients found “significant” clinical improvement in all but one 74-year-old still in intensive care and one patient who died who had an advanced, irreversible case and was 86 years old.

The bottom line, as that story states in its headline, is, “What if hydroxychloroquine doesn’t work? What if it does? Right now, we don’t know.” It quotes a health data analyst as saying, “When dealing with a pandemic, listen to experts who are used to grappling with these problems.”

I assume that would mean doctors, not Governors.

    Dear Gov Mike,
Here, in New Zealand, the rules are stringent about the Covid-19 virus, so we came up with a Mantra:

"Staying 6' apart for awhile is better than staying 6'under forever".

We pray everyday for all affected, which is basically everybody. We ask blessings for all who selflessly serve, and forgiveness for all who selfishly take advantage.
Thank you for all you have given, not just now, but over the years. May God bless you abundantly, and keep up the wonderful work you do. You are a breath of fresh air for sure, pardon the cliche!

    With deep appreciation,
    Susie & Denyse

Thanks for adding humor to lighten the serious threat to
    health and economy (Chinese virus).
I especially liked that (Pelosi) would get the bill voted on
quickly and sent to President's desk... "as unlikely as a
herd of cats forming a marching band."

State leaders need to be held accountable and do their jobs that they were elected to do and what's truly pathetic is how Liberals always put the blame on the others which typically tend to be Republicans and Conservatives. #WALKAWAY

Whitmer must be vying for the Dem VP nomination. Wonder how much someone paid her to take such a stand. Doctors and pharmacists need to challenge her...take her to the Supreme Court on this one. Clearly, she wants the elderly in Michigan to die. Probably to eliminate as many Trump supporters as possible since he won Michigan in 2016. I hope that none of her family, administration, staff, or even herself has to suffer from this virus. Oh the blood that will be on her hands for the deaths in Michigan due to her malice. In other words, her far-left political agenda.

I watched and listened as Governor Cuomo talked about ventilators and showed his little handheld, squeeze bulb. Which made me wonder, if only regular air is needed to be pumped into a person, wouldn't it be possible to use a vacuum cleaner, attach a airbag and add a valve and a timer? Just wondering. We were informed that ventilators jump in price from $25,000 each to $45,000 each. Developing a gizmo 2 use a regular squeeze bulb has to be a lot cheaper. What am I missing?

This is just unbelieveable. The news makes Trump look bad in Canada. I have argued with my wife and other family members about this. Very sad.

Well here we go again another progressive politician trying to undermine President Trump but this is serious, people’s lives are on the line. So this governor will allow ill people to die because she’s denying them a tested malaria medication that could save their life. Even life and death is politicized by this Governor. She has no conscience in her decision to threaten doctors if in their medical judgement are willing with the patients permission to administer a potential life giving drug. The gall of this person to contradict President Trump and allow people to die unnecessarily.

I can’t believe she has the lack of compassion and knowledge of what has been shown to be a good possible treatment. She should not have the authority to ban doctors from using this treatment. She’s not a doctor what does she know except she dislikes Trump.

    Dear Mike:
I have just seen a video from a doctor in south america that claims that previously some lung or bronchial problems were treated with some vaporizers, just breath medicated vapors.
He claims that the Corona virus can't survive if the temperature is above 134 degrees Fahrenheit.

Here is my idea: what if the air used in the ventilators is warmed to 134 degrees and let the heat kill the virus?

Hope you have a chance to see this comment and share with the experts.

Any comment back will be appreciated.

Listened to Mark Levin last night and what he had to say about shutting down our economy as being a mistake, I agree with. He spoke of how South Korea handled it and thought the USA should model our approach after theirs. The other topic of discussion was these Governor's in blue states, particularly New York, who knew five plus years ago that there was a shortage of medical supplies such as N95 masks, ventilators, etc and when recommended that these Governor's order, they did not. Why? Because in many of these states like New York, Illinois, California, etc. what has been more important than preparation for the American people? With the help of the liberal news media, the Dems have bombarded the American people with issues of their sanctuary cities and states, abortion, LQBTQ, and every other left-wing goal of the Democrats. So all the while with their agenda being pushed (and more increased since Obama) preparation and planning for viruses, medical supplies, etc. has-been dismissed, but now with the crisis who do they blame? - yep Trump!! A state is suppose to be ran by a Governor and his or her staff first!!! And at a federal level which administration allowed for N-95 masks and other supplies to be depleted and not restocked?- Obama-Biden and some Governor's of mainly blue states. They really didn't care about Americans, but more about illegals and their rights and protections in their beloved sanctuary states and cities. *Just one more reason on a very lengthy list of reasons, to go to the polls in November and vote out (evict) every Democrat at every level of government!!!!!

Governor Mike, I still smile and tell the story during an Arkansas county Judges convention we had time to talk re where was I from ancestry wise. You indicated you was a Georgia Huckabee and I had to own up to being a Mississippi Teague, you won.
What I am writing about is not related to your daily post. I have tried multiple times to donate to conservative candidates but I have bee blocked by a message "my cc needs a valid code". Maybe it's because I refuse to put in my cell phone number. Winred is the culprit, I just donated to President Trump with the same credit card 15 minutes ago. I would like to help other candidates but I will not give my cell phone number, ever, again. Did that once and opened a flood gate of phone calls, which I blocked, and aggravating amount of text messages which I replied stop. If you know anyone there tell them I would like to help and tell them NO phone number. Use you charm!

Withholding these two prescription drugs from a critically ill patient, or early onset Covid-19, is insane! It makes as much sense as taking our 2nd amendment away. Most Americans know how to protect themselves when theirs, or a loved ones life is in danger. We condone implimenting hormonal theraphy on our young children whilst we turn a blind eye. Where's the concern for the ramifications in the most vulnerable of our population? These precious children are facing lifelong challenges should they change their minds, or any other number of complications. Contrast this to you, or your loved one in a hospital bed with days, or hours left to live. "Sorry," says the doctor, "The governor has said I can't give you the medicine that will probably cure you within a few days."
I so wish President Trump could stop this with executive order right now!!!!!

Just wondering---is there really nothing else happening in the world? No wars or rumors of war? No ISIS or their friends? No Christians being tortured or killed? No bank robberies? No pleas for money for other causes? Surely there is some other life happenings on the planet?

Gov. not sure what the Mich Gov is doing to say none of these meds that may work for this Virus. HOW? If these do work amazing? I would be leaving Michigan. Cannot play God. Gov. I wish the President I am for him would let more of the medical people with him and his cabinet speak he tried to explain so much of what is going on medically . Fine but not the Dr or a scientist. Today by the ship going to NY great the President was there and not a bad idea to maybe also have an Admiral by him to speak also ? Many say now he is kind of trying too hard per not able to do his gatherings. Just his being there and introducing and on TV like he is more then enough for all to know who is working for the people. No matter what he does they are going to try to tear this down. Even the NY Gov today he did not know until now what a VENT was honestly Gov. You turned down change to buy a few back in 2015? So as President this would be enough for me to say I am no longer going to run give this over to much younger to handle whatever next? Way too much and I can see he is exhausted. Not in great shape. I do not say this negative I say this as an RN. Gov. admire what all he is doing per a virus we had no control over and might have if the Chinese had spoke up. NOW to know whey they did not for the WORLD. We can open up soon two weeks and get back the younger people . Protect the older until we can do more with a vaccine or what they find will control this? We can get past this both medically and financially so many businesses offering ways to cover payments for a couple of months or so. Ck with who you may have loans with. Must be really hard in NY per so many in those super high rises stuck basically. We can transfer patients everywhere, we can use the medical in other places and vents etc. Use ambulances set up and take patients other area to help the teams in NY they need a break. Ships will be a super help. May be a ship to move into La if needed? Sad they decided on Mardi Gras and others in Fla. get togethers with too many ? Now we all pray and Gov your messages are super I pass on to many.

Actually the best testing of this medicine is being done now! It’s death for many if those! If you had it, what would you choose trying this medicine or a possibility of death! Use this Med, it is the only hope we have now! And I guarantee you if one of these Gov had the disease or their family they would use it!

Make the Michigan Governor responsible for each death with a personal, not the State of Michigan, 10 million dollar fine each until the medicine is allowed to be used by her.

Earlier, this past week, wife was going in to work (she has a part time "retirement" job, in the Richmond, VA area, dealing with adoption of children - their building is locked down and they are doing teleconferencing, oddly enough she found an iguana in their parking lot and got local animal control to pick it up, maybe someone was putting their iquana up for adoption). She was listening to a radio broadcast and wasn't sure who it was (too early for Rush or Glenn). Anyway, the person doing the broadcast alleged that during the Obama administration the Governor of New York had been given a lot of money to buy medical supplies but did not do so. Instead, allegedly, he gave the money to a "green energy" company which subsequently went out of business. Apparently now New York is complaining that they don't have sufficient medical supplies when, if this story is true, they could have had them available.
