For the past three years or so, I’ve heard Democrats and the media (but I repeat myself) constantly assail President Trump for not having the proper character or temperament to be President. But I’ve always felt that you could judge those things best by watching what someone does in a crisis.

So far in this pandemic, I have seen Trump move early and amid heavy criticism to try to stop people with infections from coming into the US (you can’t keep a virus out, but you can slow it down and buy precious time.) He’s appointed the best people possible and given them the power, budget and leeway to do what they think needs to be done. He’s taken actions that he knew would kneecap the economy and harm his biggest reelection selling point, but he put the good of America first and did it anyway (I could name some other politicians who would not have done that in an election year - and when faced with the situation, didn’t.) He's trying to walk a tightrope between making the dangers of the disease very clear and reassuring people that it will be all right so don't panic. And he’s reached out to the other Party, urging them to put partisanship aside and work together to deal with the crisis.

Commentary continues below advertisement

So…how has the other side responded? You know, the people with such high standards of “character” for others? Thus far, they have relentlessly attacked, mocked, criticized, second-guessed and undermined everything Trump has tried to do. They accused him of being racist for shutting down travel from China, then after it became clear that was a very smart move, they criticized him for not doing it sooner. They blamed his speech for the drop in the Dow, even though markets were plummeting worldwide before he ever even spoke, and there was nothing he could have said that would have been interpreted as good news for stocks.

They claimed that Obama would have dealt with a health crisis much better, even though he acted much more slowly in dealing with swine flu. Plus, his Administration spent several years and around $2 billion just to create a health insurance website that didn’t work.

Oh, and let’s not overlook the shameless, self-serving opportunism. Like House Democrats’ attempts to load up the emergency coronavirus funding bill with liberal wish list pork, including Nancy Pelosi’s attempt to sneak in taxpayer funding of abortion. Memo to Speaker Pelosi: the idea of this bill is to PREVENT death, not subsidize it.

Fortunately, the GOP Senate will have time to go through the House bill and disinfect it, since Mitch McConnell canceled next week’s scheduled recess:

Joe Biden (or more likely, his staffers) rushed out a harsh criticism of Trump’s “lack of leadership” and a list of things that Biden would have been done, all of which have already been done by Trump. Well, all except the first thing, which was to insure that no bias against Asian or Pacific American peoples be tolerated. That’s the modern Democrats in a nutshell: so obsessed with identity politics that their #1 priority in dealing with a pandemic is to assume Americans will react to it like violent racists and virtual signal at us. I’d like to see the lab work that shows the virus cannot penetrate a thick layer of self-righteousness.

It’s also been noted how amazing it is that the solution to every crisis is to implement whatever the left has already been pushing for. For many, this crisis has been the perfect excuse to push for full government control of health care (even as they are attacking the government under Trump for “botching” the handling of health care.) Example: Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tried to claim that South Korea got the infection under control because they have “single payer health care.”

Twitter users quickly reminded her that so does Italy, and they’re so overwhelmed that hospitals are denying care to elderly people and sending them home. Should we call the officials who have to break that news to the elderly Italians “death panels”?

As for the news media, I’m sure you know how well they reacted to Trump’s call for unity. For instance, CNN’s Don Lemon nearly blew a gasket when he couldn’t get even noted Trump critic John Kasich to attack Trump’s handling of the crisis.

We’ve also had a rash of media outlets declaring that Trump or anyone else who describes the disease as the “Wuhan virus,” the China virus or even a “foreign virus” is racist and xenophobic. In doing this, they’re carrying water for the communist government in Beijing, which started calling that racist because even though it was 100% accurate, it was bad for their phony image. It's actually no more racist than calling linguini "Italian food."

This prompted conservatives on social media to pull up dozens of clips of the PC talking heads using those exact same terms over the past month. Here’s a sample compilation:

I was genuinely hoping that the media and the Democrats would heed Trump’s call to put America first, set aside partisanship and pull together (some, like California Gov. Gavin Newsom, really are.) But I guess that for some of them, that’s like expecting a duck not to quack. It’s disgusting that they can see something that’s causing so much human suffering as an opportunity to score cheap political points. But their attempts are so obvious – and so repulsive – that this coronavirus episode might prove very costly to them in the long run.

Excellent article...A couple of comments. AOC is wrong, South Korea does not have single payer health care. Perhaps she is thinking of North Korea. They are the most capitalistic country in the world and they have a totally different mindset when facing crisis, instilled in them from decades of abuse by Japan and China. When you go to a hospital in Korea, you pay. Because of capitalism the cost is much, much cheaper. I don't know exactly, but somewhere around 10% of what we pay. Secondly, when you are hospitalised, family cares for you, not food, bathing etc ( Watch a Korean Drama ).
My second point concerning mindset.. One example, they had an oil spill a number of years ago and while the world was wringing their hands and telling how many decades it would take to recover, the Korean people, descended on that spill. Tens of thousands of volunteers, each with their own rags and detergent, and they cleaned every rock and every covered animal; Everything that had oil on it. While the world bureaucracy was sending out requests for world funding ( never waste a good crisis ) the koreans fixed the problem.
Their reaction has been similar with the wujanvirus. They had a very unique situation. There is a cult there, where the virus started. It came straight from Wujan. The Korean CDC went to them and tried to get the list of names of people in the cult. The leaders lied to them as they, like most cults, are secret on many levels. The authorities threatened to charge them with murder and they produced the list. Some 200,000 members were given ( details I don't know and I don't want to research it ). And so like ants, off the Koreans went and tracked down those that had been in contact with members who had tested positive. They were not going willy nilly and just checking people. The people they originally checked had been around infected people. There are several reasons, they have had a low mortality rate. First this cult, like many cults, has a large number of young people, especially young women. Secondly, the elderly in Korea are loved and honored, unlike countries with social medicine, where the elderly are pushed aside. Many of the young people have stopped buying masks, so the elderly could get them. Also these Korean doctors and nurses have worked tirelessly, as they always do in crisis. Their doctors are brilliant and have worked to the point of exhaustion. They have nurses working hours and hours with that infectious gear on. Their faces are all swollen from the work, but still they kept going until the job was completed. Korean nurses are the best in the world.
I'm a little partial, having lived in Korea 4 years and after being married to a nice Korean girl for the past 36 years.

Your article is very well rounded and thoughtful.
Unfortunately many only listen to CNN ,Msnbc and the NY times and seriously think the President is failing us.
I'm a democrat (though not for long),
Who sees Pepsi and Schumer (I'm from NY state; for what they are.
    My Democratic party is gone.

The other side tried to sneak funding for Planned Parenthood into the solution. They are so lost.

Regarding your comments on late night propaganda shows like Colbert, I've wondered why Fox doesn't create a conservative based late night show. I used to never miss Johnny Carson and to some degree Jay Leno. However, since there are only liberal pundits now I have stopped watching any of them-EVER! I don't have any friends that watch these liberal haters. I suspect that Fox would garner huge viewership if it offered something for folks like me. What do you think?

All the Democrats have done is to assure my vote for President Trump in 2020 and to vote a straight Republican ticket even though I may not particularly care for the Republican candidate. I'm like most Americans in that our politics fall more to the middle than to the right or left but they have almost assured my vote to never be for a Democrat again!!!

Why doesn't President Trump take responsibility for every bad thing that has happened
since God created earth and leave it at that. He can't win..nobody can when someone is
    always looking for the worst.

One thing as a Christian that gives me comfort amid all this turmoil is when I see footage of President Trump, Mike Pence and the men and women close to them with heads bowed in prayer lifting this crisis up to our only real hope Jesus Christ our God, this administration Is an example for all Americans regardless of political party, dose God have our attention? I hope and pray.

If the cnn/msnbc/dementoKrats were half as intelligent as they pretend to be they would have noticed that the Chinese Commie Wuhan Wonder 2019 Virus started taking hold in the United States near the end of flu season. If they had looked at the world map of CCWW19 virus cases they would see that in countries where the climate is warm the spread of the disease seems to be under control. Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong have successfully managed the threat as well as South Korea which though in a colder region has taken prudent measures to contain the spread of the virus. In Italy, the northern colder part was hit much harder than the south. With April fast approaching, climate change is coming to the United States and if this Chinese Commie Wuhan Wonder 2019 Virus follows past virus patterns it should start fading away in a few weeks time. Then President Trump will be seen as having taken proper prudent actions and the DementoKrat/media partisan fools will be seen as the fools that they are - pushers of yet another fake crisis, thus ensuring Trump's reelection.

God. Bless you and well said. i am a Nurse though now in another profession and this is this biggest bogus mass hysteria I have ever seen over a virus that is not that deadly. The swine flu killed around 13,000 in the US alone in 9 months this has killed about 50 in 3 months and 19 were all in the same nursing home and 80 years old approx. we closed nothing during the swine flu when Obama was in office we have closed everything and are intentionally destroying our economy and people’s life savings for this. I am so angry at the irresponsible hype of the press and the fake outrage of the Dems I could scream. We need a mass collection of voices of reason to speak out against this idiocy although sadly i fear it is too late.

Mr. Huckabee, it has become quite apparent for me that I didn't understand the laws of our country when comparing to the rights of the regular American citizen and the rights of politicians. The double standard has become extremely visible ever since Barack Obama's Administration carried out their day-to-day duties. Now more than ever during President Trump's Administration, we have seen conservatives and Republicans being investigated, arrested, and imprisoned while those affiliated with the Democratic party go about daily life as if their decisions and inappropriate dealings are untouchable. What is even more frustrating and infuriating is that there are those who have been elected as representatives in the Republican party who ignore the improprieties of those very same Democrats. The Swamp is murkier than I first thought. I vote on a regular basis and have given monies to support the conservative way of life, yet it seems to be of no consequence for those who intend to harm us. We hear quite frequently to do more to stop our country from being attacked not only from the outside but also from within. How is that done when we follow the very laws that are here to protect us and they are quickly interpreted in such a way that it hurts us? We are told to go and vote but we have no control for those who vote in other states and they vote in the Lindsey Graham's, Mitch McConnell's, Paul Ryan's, John McCain's, Nancy Pelosi's, Chuck Schumer's, Adam Schiff's, Jerry Nadler's, Maxine Waters, etc., etc. Is the more we can do? If so, Please, Please, Please explain it to me!!!

We should be also reminded that our medical medications come from China. What if this could have been intentional. Their economy is off due to the trade crisis, they have too many people and need relief. It didn't happen that way, as far as we know, but it does sound a wake up call that we are not in control of the sources of the medication we depend on daily. Make America Great Again means making America "independent". I believe all things happen for reasons and we should pay attention at all times to the things that happen and then think to the future to be prepared for what we have learned and to make plans accordingly.
President Trump got out ahead of the problem without anyone knowing. Once he knew we were not prepared, he gave way to whatever it would take to get us there. If would have been so much better, had we planned to be more prepared for the crisis. Give him another four years and we will be. I bet.
How low can a person be as to use this for politics as the Dems have done. They must not be allowed to come near our health issues, insurances, or anything medical that we all need.

I have never been so proud of a president of our great country, America! He has been working tirelessly behind the scenes with the best experts on this Coronavirus, and today we see how much our president cares about us Americans. He is putting us first and not politics. Shame on Nancy Pelosi and the crazy left for trying to politicize this Coronavirus! She says often what a great catholic she is! She’s no great catholic, she’s evil! God bless our great president, Donald J. Trump!

I have no expectations from the Left other than what they normally do....resist, accuse, defy, lie, delay, hate and anything else as long as it is in polar opposition to what the President of the country is doing. I have decided they are not capable of anything more. So if we have to protect America, including them, we can do it. We are better with bigger hearts.

All I have heard from the democrats is constant complaining about the Trump Administration. Not one word of how to do it better, or even one single constructive critique. That's all they have is a nasty feeble attempt at negative fault finding. Lacking Trump, they viciously attack each other.

I am not surprised at the behavior of the Democrats. They have done nothing but try to demean Donald Trump and the Republicans. I’ve never seen anyone show their hatred more. What they are fighting for is nothing short of evil.
