Why do so many people believe the official death toll from the coronavirus is unreliable? Maybe because it probably is unreliable

Wait, so you mean that if you require everyone to wear a mask in public, some armed robbers will take advantage of that to rob stores? Please, nobody tell New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio about this. It might shatter his faith in the trustworthy nature of criminals.

One of America’s most popular and influential podcasters, Joe Rogan, is no conservative (he endorsed Bernie Sanders for President), but even he has had enough of the never-ending shutdowns in California (Los Angeles County officials now say they will almost certainly extend the stay-at-home order for another three months, by which time there might not be a business left in the entire county.) Inspired by an interview with fed-up Tesla founder Elon Musk, Rogan said he’s considering moving to Texas.

If he needs a little more incentive, how about the threat by L.A. officials to cut off water and power to any businesses they've decreed to be “non-essential” that refuse to close?

I’ll also add that the person making these dictatorial decrees, Los Angeles County Director of Public Health Dr. Barbara Ferrer, pulls down over $553,000 a year (and hasn’t missed a penny during this shutdown.) But she’s worth that salary because, as notes, she has a “Ph.D. in Social Welfare from Brandeis University, a Master of Arts in Public Health from Boston University, a Master of Arts in Education from the University of Massachusetts, Boston, and a Bachelor of Arts in Community Studies from the University of California, Santa Cruz.”

Notice anything missing? Like a medical degree?

It’s great to hear that more influential Californians are waking up and rebelling against their out-of-control leftist nanny state and longing for places like Texas that still respect freedom and individual rights and responsibilities. I’m also sure Rogan would get a warm welcome in Texas. But on behalf of the Lone Star State, I urge him to remember that if you vote for the same policies you’re fleeing, you’ll just ruin the place that took you in. Thinking that Bernie Sanders should be President is how you get disasters like Gov. Gavin Newsom and the people who don’t want L.A. to reopen until Labor Day, if then. Why not save the cost of a U-Haul by just voting to replace these people with the kind of leaders they have in Texas?

Great Moments in “Gotcha” Journalism: The Washington Post nailed President Trump for not being aware that his paternal grandfather died of the Spanish flu -- 28 years before Trump was born. I’m not sure offhand what my relatives died of over a century ago, but I do know what’s killing journalism right now.

Worth a Read: Peggy Noonan on the “class struggle over lockdown,” between the protected class lecturing us to stay in place indefinitely to be “safe,” and the working class who know there’s no such thing as “safe” and whose lives are a series of tough choices that the protected class has never had to deal with.

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie made a similar argument to the very-much-protected hosts of “The View,” who can’t seem to grasp why those selfish people out there want to risk getting a virus by going to work to feed their families and save their businesses.

Excellent commentary by sci-fi/tech writer David L. Burkhead about the “false dilemma of Die or Die.” That is, that we have only two choices: go out and die of the COVID-19 (Chinese) coronavirus or stay home and die of poverty. He also addresses why sending people government money to stay home does not address the underlying problem, which is that people have to go out and work to create the goods and services that we spend the money on so that we do not die.

Laughing Until It Hurts: A round-up of headlines from the Christian satire site The Babylon Bee, mocking the endless coronavirus lockdowns and the leftist politicians exploiting them. Each one links to the full story behind it.

Weekend “Just For Fun” Story: A Maryland dad who was depressed at being stuck in the house seemingly forever found a way to cheer up himself and his neighborhood by posting his “dad” jokes on his lawn, one groaner per day. FYI: a “dad joke” is a joke so corny, it’s somehow hilarious, and there are some good examples in this story. For the record: I’m a granddad, so my jokes are twice as corny, and therefore, twice as hilarious.

Friday, President Trump announced the creation of a new public-private partnership, designed to develop and make available to everyone a vaccine for the COVID-19 (Chinese) coronavirus by the end of the year or even sooner.

Appropriately named “Operation Warp Speed,” the goal is to develop a vaccine faster than any vaccine has ever been created, tested, cleared, and distributed before. The partnership involves the federal government, medical professionals, pharmaceutical giants, and the US military. Trump called it “a massive scientific, industrial and logistical endeavor, unlike anything our country has seen since the Manhattan Project,” which developed the atomic bomb during World War II. It sounds like another reason why we're lucky we elected a business manager in 2016 instead of another machine politician.

There are more details at the link. I urge members of the media to read the details closely because I don’t want to see any fake news stories claiming that Trump said he wants to drop the atomic bomb on the virus.

I would be very interested in seeing data for the total number of deaths (for all causes) month by month in the US over the last 3 or 4 years. It would be very interesting to see if the numbers in March, April, and May of 2020 are significantly higher than the same months in previous years. I wonder if it is even possible to determine the exact cause of death in many cases, making some of the data reports this year very subjective and suspect.

My other comment is that life is full of risk, and very little progress is made without risk. It is one thing to shut down for a week or two or perhaps even three to allow time for preparation to address a crisis. It is very short sighted to drag this out week after week, destroying productivity, and allowing central governments (national or states) to make decisions for every individual and community. Our hope for America is found in our national motto "In God we trust." He alone has control of the future. He will give us wisdom if we seek Him and obey His commands. He will bless us if we humble ourselves, pray, seek Him, and turn from our wicked ways. His promise is to heal our land, not just from the Coronavirus, but from bitter partisanship, selfishness, deception, and lead us in truth and service to Him and mankind.

The well crafted written or video can convince people quickly...

Think about this, 6 Examples of Wealthy Influential Americans:

    1. Jeff Bezos – President of Amazon & Washington Post owner
    2. Mark Zuckerberg – co-founder of Face Book, Inc.
    3. George Soros – founded the Open Society Foundations
    4. Michael Bloomberg – NYC Mayor (2002 – 2013), Bloomberg L. P.
    5. Jeffrey Zucker – Chairman CNN
    6. Adam Schiff – U. S. Congressman, Chairs House Intelligence Committee

Consider the politics of these 6 wealthy/influential men, all American citizens, and all wealthy because of opportunities that they had because they did business in the United States and were protected by our U. S. Constitution and its Bill of Rights.

Ironically, all 6 of these men, who now ignore our Rights, had ancestors that were victims of 20th Century Tyrants - Communists and Nazis.* And their ancestors fled to the Freedoms of the United States. So now, they spend their Billions of Dollars to deny We the People of Our God given Rights as Protected by The Bill of Rights!!

Read the Bill of Rights, the foundation of our Liberty as Citizens of the United States. Remember, these men who now use their wealth and positions to become modern American Tyrants are in this Country because their ancestors were fortunate to have escaped to America. Now, these men promote Tyranny in the United States by buying elections and trying to Destroy our Bill of Rights.

*TYRANNY – the cruel, oppressive Rule of people who have no Rights under their government to Defend themselves.

What a great surprise to hear Pres. Trump say he's been taking hydroxychloroquine for about a week! I was wondering why he was pushing the 'warp speed' research for the he can say that he's good to go, doesn't need to take it 'cos the h.chloroquine is working fine for him, and suggest it's our free choice! SMART!!! Many fear that an immunity certificate will be forced upon them to go to... work, restaurants, church, etc. He is setting a precedent bravely, quietly, and wisely, PTL!
I have a great idea for a comedy show or even a movie, but it has to be done quickly and be ready to show before the weekend. Who can i share it with. I am trying to reach Eric Metaxas or Dinesh D'Sousa to pass it on. They have great humor and would appreciative redemptive comedy that is VERY relevant, to possibly sway many voters to the Trump camp. It can be done on small or large scale. Please point me to connect, preferably by phone, with a suitable person. I can explain it in about 10 put in a few details! VERY FUNNY! Thanks. If you email me I will give my phone number.

I read your Evening Edition every evening, and I did as you requested. I sent it to my daughter to help grow your column. I enjoy it and feel like I can trust what you are saying to be true.

However, I am concerned about the the situation of the pandemic and the development of a vaccine. I keep getting conflicting stories about Fauci being a fraud (several of them), and the vaccine. Supposedly, a woman named Judy Mikovitis worked with Fauci and is saying he is in with the big pharma, and so on and so on. This is coming from several christians, one a very respected missionary whom my husband and me know personally very well. My husband and son are both Baptist pastors, and this missionary has been a supported missionary from my son's church for lots of years, way before my son was the pastor. My son grew up in this church, but at age 28 went to the Dominican Republic as a missionary for 12 years. and came back 3 years ago as pastor. I am saying all of this to say that the missionary who is from this church has been a missionary for probably over 40 years and is well respected. So, I am very conflicted about what to believe, and thought maybe you could shed some light or tell me if you have heard or know anything about these allegations.

Sorry to be so long with my comment, and I know you are obviously a very busy man, but if you have just a few minutes I would appreciate it if you know anything about this situation.

Thank you so much, and God bless you.

I'm concerned about the vaccine. From what I read, it will bring a windfall of money to Bill Gates, George Soros, Dr. Fauci and Dr. Birx, as they are the drug companies involved. Perhaps that could be verified, along with the rumor (hopefully) that the vaccine will contain a chip. No vaccine for me; I'd rather develop my own immunity.

Governor, thanks again for another great read. I think some/most of these leftist governors/mayors have a brain virus & an IQ of "0."
I know the causes of which both grandfathers/grandmothers died of. I know nothing prior to my great generation because both generations came from Italy. The great generation never came to the USA. It's a good thing to know any hereditary causes through the generations. Journalism is dead!
I'm sure like many of us have concerns about the vaccine. We need to have the medical updates from the doctors a couple of times a week. I don't know why I have concerns about Dr. Fauci or the CDC dr (forgot his name). What's going on with WAO? How does one get rid of the Tedros or others?

I am very sorry that things have turned out so bad for California. Having lived in Texas for over 60 years and being married to a native Texan, I do not welcome Californians with open arms. I lived in northern Nevada for 3 years and had to endure the onslaught of the California migration there. It seems unavoidable that they want to bring their liberal policies with them and push to change their new adopted home. Thanks but no thanks.

Here we are, another week into this virus circus! I have heard so much about the lock down, the masks, the social distancing, how New York, New Jersey, California, and Illinois want to empt
y their states by making sure their residents can't make a living and feed their family without government welfare. These morons have not thought about how the vital workers are to stay at work and what they will need to do when the government well runs dry?
Maybe their plan is to move all these stupid liberals to other states and turn them liberal? I hope at least a big part of these liberals that have watched their state government and county dimwits turn their states into unlivable hell holes and give conservative government a try.
Of course, at that point, it is up to the right to come through and not roll over and play dead. It's still time to get rid of these lifers in Congress with a Convention of States!

Governor I am amazed at the people that think the corona virus is so "dumb" it can't figure out how to go around or under the Plexiglas thingy at checkout. And that it refuses to take a ride on the money and goods that travel under and around the Plexiglas thingy.

It is now 10:30AM on Sunday, May 17, and, upon just now reading the comments that people wrote to last night's Evening Edition newsletter, it blew me out of the water when I saw that the comment that followed mine was written by a man who has the same last name as mine... and the REASON seeing this DID "blow me out of the water" (for lack of a better way of expressing it) is because....other than the actress, Joyce DeWitt, and, of course, my father...I have never KNOWN anyone who shares my last name.......ANYWAY........BECAUSE I WAS so struck seeing this coincidence IN these comments, I am going to copy, and paste, them below (BEFORE I do, however, I want to add that, since Leonard stated that he was beginning his 60th year in ministry, I wonder if there is any way we are related...and I have been in the ministry almost that long!)

Your last paragraph HAD me laughing hysterically! In fact, heading to bed now, AFTER laughing so hard, feels sooo good that I have reread that last paragraph a few times now!!!!.. IN FACT...I AM GOING TO READ IT ONE LAST TIME BECAUSE IT STRIKES ME SOOO FUNNY!!!

I was born in Hollywood CA in 1955 and grew up in Topanga Canyon near Malibu. I lived through the years when CA was transitioned from largely conservative to entrenched leftist. What I remember was our community being FLOODED with leftist hippies from states that we think of as "Blue" states today. These leftist infiltrators took over the California I loved. They have thoroughly ruined CA over the 50 or so years that leftists have dominated CA politics. So the problem was then... in the 1950s and 1960s was that the Blue states they came from had become ruinously governed. The leftist hippies, who in my opinion never grew up and became today's elderly, still leftist hippies, who raised families of... yes, leftist hippies, poured out of their ruined states into my beautiful CA. So now CA is a politically ruinously governed state, and guess what the leftist aging hippies and their progeny are doing, overflowing a state THEY ruined... and of course, they're flooding into well-governed states like TX, to eventually ruin their new states the way they ruined CA. Today when I see people of my age range who are men with ponytails, or women with tie-die and stringy gray long hair...still clinging to their "peace and love, anti-establishment, i.e., socialist/communist leftist-isms... I just cringe. I know what's coming.

Texas should be careful about all the Californians they invite to move to Texas. They may find, as many in the south have, that just because liberals move to get away from a high tax, high regulation state, they don't give up their liberal voting habits. I would hate to see Texas become another California because of it.

The fact that people are escaping NY and California is a shame that they have to leave not that they want to however they have to. They are taxed not for the better by the state to squander the resources waste the resources and to have the resources stolen by De Blasio Cuomo Health Commissionor and the rest of the officials mismanaging the resources the same goes for California led by Newsom which may have more idiotic leaders than NY if that is possible elections have consequences NY California and more states are going to feel the consequences when they believe Socialism is the way to go stay locked up Socialists enjoy your stay at home while being under arrest just so you know rabied criminals are free to go. I like the idea you are staying at home less traffic and less stupidity for me to deal with while I am out and about.

Joe Rogan may move to Texas? Liberals everywhere are fleeing the failed systems they are responsible for building but this is the Get Smart television series playing out in real life. The leftists don't stop their voting habits until there is nowhere left to hide. Texas, Florida, Tennessee, and other wonderful States with a heart for Christ and a mind for common sense, have got to find a way to keep the likes of Joe Rogan out. Every election cycle we see how close Florida and Tennessee are to falling off the edge, and how corrupt the voting systems are becoming across the country. Cockroaches don't change their habits as they pop up in different locations, so the growth and spread of Chaos must be stopped in its tracks. Help us Agents 99 and Maxwell Smart. You're our only hope.

    Hi Governor Huckabee,
President Trump made a promise he would never let the American people down. Being president is a hard job, especially with the added nonsense he’s had to deal with. I believe he wants to keep that promise but he’s getting wrong medical advice, again, about the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) virus vaccine. Pushing for “warp speed” development is just playing into the hands of those who also want mandatory vaccinations. Why did the Nuremberg Trial happen? Why was the Belmont Report written? Those pushing mandatory vaccination forget about “informed consent.” This provision provides the right to consent but also the right not to consent. Vaccines are inherently dangerous. But developing this vaccine at “warp speed” and without proper testing is nothing more than using the American people as guinea pigs for experimentation. Just like what brought about the Nuremberg Trials.
