One woman's take on the shameful Kavanaugh confirmation process

September 18, 2018 |

In this time of anonymous op-eds, it was tempting for me to write this without putting my name to it, but it would be unfortunate to see the message diluted with accusations of “Coward!”  My work as a staff writer typically does not carry my byline, and there’s a certain freedom in that.  I have many friends on both sides of the political aisle and can generally predict what the reactions will be to what I say or write.  I have tried to keep my online presence as politics-free as possible, even declining friendship requests from people whose pages are relentlessly and hatefully political.  But what is happening with the Kavanaugh vote and the total politicization of the #MeToo movement is just the last straw for me when it comes to left-wing politics, and it’s time to speak out.

It’s gotten to the point that, thanks to the left, I’m embarrassed to be female.

Let me preface this by explaining that I have an unusually varied professional background, embracing both the entertainment world –- music, comedy, theater, radio, journalism –- and also the corporate world.  I even spent some time in Hollywood pursuing film work, which I do not recommend.  Without a doubt, the abundant stories of sexism and predatory behavior are real and have existed since long before any of us were born.  I know what it’s like to have to humor men who have held the key to that next promotion or part and how to gracefully but firmly shut my hotel room door at a corporate conference to keep the boss from following me inside.  I know what it’s like to walk into a meeting room full of men, some of whom are checking me out, and think, “What fresh hell is this?”

So does all this stuff really happen?  At the risk of sounding like Sarah Palin, “You betcha!”  And it’s gratifying to see the stories coming out.  (I especially appreciated Linda Bloodworth-Thomason’s firsthand account of the way sexism and misogyny can destroy a woman’s career in Hollywood, but then I became confused by the vague recollection that she was a longtime Friend Of Bill, who is responsible for bringing illicit sex with underlings right into the White House.  It would be great to have a long lunch with her and discuss this.  Call me, Linda!)  But the problem now is that politics has ruined #MeToo.

It was inevitable that at precisely this point in Judge Kavanaugh’s confirmation process, the women (in this case, woman) would emerge.  This tactic has become the magic bullet to take out candidates and nominees who don’t lean sufficiently left on key issues, particularly abortion.  Sometimes the women appear, perform their function, and then essentially disappear back into the void.  Call me cynical, but in Kavanaugh’s case, the politically expedient timing of this development, thanks to the deliberate delay by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, is enough to discredit the whole thing.  Sure, let Ms. Ford share her story, but it should have been shared in July, when it could have been carefully assessed.  We know what this is, and I’m not going to spend my time here making that case.  None of us can say with certainty what did or did not happen to Ms. Ford 36 years ago, when they were all kids in high school, but the politics behind this is becoming clearer with each passing hour.  WE KNOW.

So you on the left, spare me your concern for women.  You use women for political purposes, just as surely as many powerful men use women for sexual purposes.  If you really cared about what happened to women, Juanita Broaddrick’s detailed and corroborated story about being raped by then-Arkansas Attorney General Bill Clinton would not have been shoved to the back pages and essentially dismissed by most in the media for decades.  Just give me a break.

The #MeToo movement showed some potential at first for calling attention to pervasive sexism, but it has been ruined by “p***” hats, mindless calls to “resist,” and demands that absolutely every woman is to be believed.  Isn’t it obvious that saying every woman is to be believed is just as ridiculous as saying every man is to be believed?  I’ve had enough of these outrageous double standards.

Maybe in a few decades, people will have regained their sanity and will look back on this time with laughter and derision, the way we look back on the decade of the ‘70s with its lime green shag carpeting---in bathrooms, yet.  (Well, a few bathrooms.  I digress.)  They’ll see it as an odd period when politics “jumped the shark” and people just went bat-dirt crazy, with “safe spaces,” p-hats, wildly unequal justice, and 57 different genders.  At the risk of sounding like Cher in MOONSTRUCK, I'd like to figuratively slap you on the cheek and yell, "Snap out of it!!"

Perhaps in the future they’ll blame President Trump for all this, as many do now, but they shouldn't.  They should put the blame squarely on those of you who have gone off the rails in your reaction to him.  If we’re lucky, the President will go down in history with some pretty solid accomplishments --- such as some great Supreme Court appointments --- but you will be remembered for having completely lost your minds.

I am utterly refreshed. Not necessarily by your political remarks which, it goes without saying, are completely correct, but by your classical Jazz career/persona/chops! The less attention a civilization pays to classics like music, literature, style, politics, i.e. its culture, the more tenuous becomes its grip on civility and decency.

If I may add one aspect to the conversation, the alt-left's affliction is merely a page out of another classic, that of the three year old's tantrum whereby they "stomp their foot and scream hysterically until the parent gives in." It usually works because the adult just wants to stop the insanity. It's a tried and true tactic and one to which today's alt-leftists, children and terrorists resort when they have neither logic or reason to back up their demands of entitlement.

Enough of my verbosity, I really just wanted to say, "Well done, Jazz Lady!"

Here, here! You're absolutely CORRECT. I couldn't have put it better myself. But I will attempt to add my 2 cents worth. As teenagers our brains are still evolving into adult minds and are subjected to various ideas, good and bad, mixed with alcohol, drugs and other variables. I take complete responsibility for everything that happened to me as a teenager and in my adult life since then. Mistakes were made, bad things happened to me. I survived and think that I've turned out to be a better person. As I try to look back on things that I survived, I am able to see where I went wrong and the choices I should have made to avoid the mistakes. Now that I'm 68, I am happy to say that above all I've learned to take PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY for my actions. Personal responsibility is a wonderful thing. You cannot blame anything on anyone else and you learn from your mistakes. What a liberating life it's been!

Sometimes it's a few days before I get to read your columns. Just saw this "One Woman's Take..." - here's mine. Yesterday a friend posted an LOL on Facebook: "Ford says Kavanaugh MUST go first before she testifies. ALSO: baseball will now require batter to swing before pitcher throws." Hilarious, right?! My friend had prefaced it with: "I seriously believe the Demoncrats have truly lost their minds..and here is proof..." So, if you're still with me (LOL!) here was my reply: 'Ya know... If they'd actually "lost their minds" they probably wouldn't be thinking at all, right? Rather the more accurate reality is that they've "found" the ways to fiercely hone their *minds* into the MOST HATEFUL, UGLY weapons in order to inflict the most chaos, mayhem, confusion, destruction, pain, and damage on anyone and everyone who doesn't agree with their cruel agenda. That's how they've virtually 24/7 programmed themselves and their ilk. It seems mind-blowing to us because we simply don't think or operate that way so each time they perpetrate a new subterfuge, we have to stop, assess, recover from gagging, and then say, "OMG who even thinks like that?!?!?" But--- they're already onto their next WMD. We MUST continually remember: JOHN 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I [your Father] have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.' Make no mistake folks - WE ARE FIGHTING EVIL, a.k.a. THE THIEF, THE ENEMY. God help us! However - I do still pray for them. Thanks for *listening.*

Thank you so much Laura. I am a 68-year old conservative whose heart absolutely bleeds for this man and his family. As a father of 4, I can't even begin to think of how this madness got to where it is. I wish I could invoke more wisdom but for now I just want to let you know there are so many friends and associates of mine who feel just as you do. I also know of a few people who just can't understand why we feel as we do......so passionate about doing the right thing for our country. We need to keep the heat up. Too many of us (myself included) are too accustomed to being a doormat to Liberal thinking and actions. I have found new energy because of this and because of your voice. Again, thank you for your commitment to truth.

As a woman, I am disgusted with the #MeToo movement going on. The "PussyHat" followers are giving women a bad name. I do not want to be represented by those women. I was a single mom, working in a man's environment and privately fought my own battles. I didn't need to tell the world about my individual "sexual harassment" as it's called today. It was part of life...I dealt with it. I may have shared some of it with friends to " talk it out" ...but I didn't feel the need to be against all men...just those who didn't know proper boundaries. To think a drunken 15 year old girl would "grow up ? " 30 some odd years later and disrupt and try to ruin a fellow high schooler's life, has questionable motives for sure. We all see thru her and her lawyer's plan, but those wanting to hurt Kavanaugh are taking it as it was dished out for them. To destroy, hurt and try to change the direction of what is right for America.

Thank You Laura for 'saying' writing what I also believe as well. When I was in my 'wild teen' years, I probably would be considered a 'slut' in today's words, but it was always MY CHOICE as I really liked teen boys! I could be deranged and say I was date-raped, but I never was. I didn't realize at the time that in order for teen boys to like you you had to go 'all the way', but I was misinformed, as I also hung out with the 'wrong crowd', the 'pot-heads' as we called them in the 70's, and those with low moral standards about themselves. If at the time, the more popular route of chastity was the norm and not 'make love not war' which was the Liberalists' war cry in protest of the Vietnam War, and the Woodstock mentality, I would have respected myself better and didn't let teen boys fool me into believing what I was doing with them, was the popular thing to do instead of just being myself....liking boys but not at the price of disrespecting myself. But I never blamed them, as I was just as responsible for my actions as they were, and I learned after my divorce, that I can be loved and cared about by a wonderful man who respects me without first ' going all the way'. I have been married to this same wonderful man for 28 years now, we have been together for 33 years, and I wish I had found him first before my first marriage, but it wasn't the plan. So these same women in the news now, are only in it to make money as they are so full of bitterness and hatred because they must live in a miserable life, that they most likely brought on themselves anyway, that they don't know right from wrong, so they will fall for anything as they don't stand firm about any moral ideals.... and the women who truly were victims, are left still unheard and probably living in hellish lives and cannot escape them because it's like the fable, 'the boy who cried wolf', too many times hateful women and men use women only for political agendas....and the true victims are then victimized yet again..... The only way Liberals win, is by cheating and corrupted means. Finally we have a President, President Trump, who respects women and men and cares about all Americans who indeed have morals, and know the difference between right and wrong, and don't want to break the law for any thing or any one.... Freedom is a responsibility for all who want it, it isn't just given to you, you have to nurture it and earn it, by staying out of trouble and respecting yourself to know what is right and what isn't the right thing to do. Too many people are taking the easy route, the popular route, which isn't always the Right Route, the Right Route isn't always the easy route to take, but it makes you a better person on that route.

One woman's take on the shameful Kavanaugh confirmation process

    Laura,
So well said. Thank you. I agree with everything you said. I am so disgusted and disappointed with what they are doing to this great man. All his credentials, lifestyle, career plus the letter of support from 65 women is being totally ignored. It’s shameful. I pray he is confirmed!
Thank you Governor Huckabee for your great information.

This woman's comment on the shameful Kavanaugh approval case is spot on. No one could say it better than she has done. I think this is something set up by the liberals. Shame on you Feinstein. Our government has been so corrupt and we were not aware of just HOW CORRUPT it has been. CONFIRM JUDGE KAVANAUGH!! Obama sure ruined our country. I didn't vote for him and I never liked him. He is nothing but a smooth talker.

Commentary continues below advertisement

I suggest that we removed from the Kavanaugh vote (by Senate discipline). For her delay and deceive tactics, Sen Booker for is blatant and open repudiation of the Senate rules and all the Senators that issued passes to the demonstraters that misused them. At that point., Mr. Kavanaugh would win nomination handily and justifiably.
