If you want to see the results of leftist policies, go to the cities that are run by the most elite, wealthy and “progressive” people, such as Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle, where homelessness, filth and disease are taking over. The scene is shocking and heartbreaking.

In an appearance on Monday’s HANNITY, I pointed out that this is the kind of thing that used to be seen only in Third World countries. For decades, we could be confident that we had eradicated serious diseases such as plague and typhus. But today, the rat infestation is so serious that police officers (five at this writing) in the central LA area are coming down with typhus, and some medical experts suspect that bubonic plague is present. BUBONIC PLAGUE. You know, the “Black Death” from medieval times that wiped out about a third of Europe’s population and lingered for centuries. In the 1600s, during the Great Plague of London, one in five residents died.

During those long centuries, no connection was made between rats and fleas and the disease they caused. In fact, some medieval doctors believed it was caused by pockets of bad air released during earthquakes or possibly by an unfavorable alignment of Saturn, Jupiter and Mars in the 40th degree of Aquarius on March 20, 1345. Some of them believed that bad smells could drive out the plague, so they spread excrement around, actually furthering the spread of the disease. And bathing was discouraged, as it was believed that this opened the pores and made one more susceptible to infection. Just goes to show, there’s hardly anything more worthless than a medieval doctor, except perhaps economist Paul Krugman.

We finally do have antibiotics that can treat plague, and most people survive if they get the correct medicine in time. (Otherwise, it’s about 50-50.) But the main way to deal with it is still with good sanitation and pest control, as a plague epidemic needs filthy, crowded and rat-infested conditions to get going. Large cities have always had to deal with rats; there’s no New Yorker of any age who hasn’t heard jokes about the size of New York rats. But the kind of infestation we’re seeing now is something else again, thanks to mountains of garbage and human waste.

An article in National Geographic points out that plague still exists in various parts of the world. The most recent global epidemic started in China in the 1800s and didn’t end till 1959. (This outbreak actually spread to San Francisco through Chinese immigration.) In 2006, an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo took the lives of at least 50 people. In recent years, there have been cases in China, India, Mongolia, Vietnam and...the United States.

We’re always concerned about the threat of terrorists possibly releasing bacteria such as plague in some aerosol form. But who needs terrorists when your own government bureaucrats are fully capable of letting it take hold and metastasize on their own streets?

I hesitated to link to the article about bubonic plague because I’m not trying to sensationalize this problem. (In fact, if you’re a hypochondriac, you might not want to read it at all, and just remember that unless you live or work around this filth, you’re generally safe.) But it’s important for people to see the seriousness of the threat of this and other diseases and not let political correctness get in the way of handling it. We don’t want leftists to, in effect, give the bubonic plague bacterium or some other microbe full civil rights because it happens to take hold among the homeless population.

Anyway, in these large, dirty, poorly run cities, there are victims beyond the hard-core homeless (although they are victims, too). I feel especially sorry for two groups of people: the ones who want to get out of there but who can’t afford to leave, and also for those police officers and public health officials who are risking their own lives and health and fighting a losing battle, with no assistance from the mayor and City Council, who should be ashamed of themselves for even taking a paycheck if this is the best they can do.

In San Francisco, House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi lives and works behind security gates, within a mile of some of the most filthy, horrific examples of this. Large numbers of homeless people are camping out alongside the buildings, using the sidewalks and stairwells for toilets, shooting up drugs and tossing their used syringes all over the ground. Pelosi doesn’t want a wall for America, but in San Francisco, she has one for herself, just as all her cronies do. The hypocrisy and downright insanity of “progressivism” is too obvious to ignore.

This isn’t just a political discussion --- this is a discussion of how America is going to survive as a civilization if we keep going on this track. But politics is keeping us from dealing with it.

From this linked-to article in the LA Times, one can see that some participants at Los Angeles city council meetings are making heroic efforts not to blame homeless people.  They’re in huge denial and are spinning madly by trying to blame such things as the overwatering of plants (I am not kidding) for the rat population explosion. Clearly, it’s the homelessness --- fostered mostly by drug and alcohol abuse and mental illness --- in “progressive” cities affordable to only the very wealthy that has caused the huge infestation of rats and their disease-carrying fleas.

https://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-rats-homelessness-city-hall-fleas-report-20190603-story.html

I wish I could be more optimistic, but it’s hard to imagine any improvement in these cities until leftists are voted out and some hands-on leaders can come in at the city and state levels and do what it takes to eradicate the problems. It all comes down to the voters wising up, but they seem to have the collective IQ of a diseased flea.

    Mr. Mike,
Sir, I am disputing your reference to Los Angelas, San Francisco & Seattle being comparatively to a 3rd world country.
I now retired, drilled oil wells internationally for 40 years & not even once in a tropical paradise.
During this time I spent many months & sometime years living & working in numerous 3rd world countries. I have visited fishing villages that never had electricity with fish hanging on lines drying like a clothes line, shacks with dirt floors, thatch roofs, walls made from packing crates, scrap tin, flattened cans. Places like outside of Warri Nigeria, Luanda Angola, assorted areas in Brazil, French Guiana & so on.
The difference, even in abject poverty the majority of people in these 3rd world countries attempted a standard of cleanliness & decorum.
There was not piles of rotting food, garbage lying around them & never once did I encounter people using public areas to releave themselves.
No Sir, the vast proportion of the US homeless situation can best be summed up as the mentally ill with severe problems that family will no longer provide assistance, addictions to various substances & the absolute derelicts. The filth around which they live & the conditions they create are deliberate.

MIke, Hi! Have you seen my book at www.ThePlagueOfLiberalism.com? As an ex liberal and an expert on addiction, I explain how liberals are addicted to breaking down freedom barriers because they are not free inside. That freedom is something that only God can give. So as long as they reject the God of the Bible, they will be aching for freedom, which they envision as breaking down any barriers that restrain human behavior. It's too bad that they don't realize that those barriers are for their protection and the protection of all. They might restrict certain behaviors but they keep the lions out also. In my work, I also solve the mysteries behind life, death and the Universe using science. Here is my current press release. Press Release, Guest Submission

CONTACT: Dennis Marcellino (503) 650-8840 or email [email protected]

Author Uniquely Solves The Mysteries Behind
    Life, Death and the Universe

Author Dennis Marcellino says that after four decades of research and dwelling on this subject, he can now scientifically prove the existence of God and the credibility of the Bible. That search led him through 20 different approaches to lifestyle and Truth, and was grounded in an education in engineering (which included all of the basic sciences), winning math contests, and deeply delving into psychology, philosophy, spirituality and theology.

That has driven him to write 7 books and make 5 DVDs to spread this information, which is valuable to all human beings because they all will face an unavoidable departure from this planet at one point.

In his quest to uncover THE Truth about life, death and the Universe, he developed an acid test for determining Truth. He calls it Truth F.O.B.I.A. The premise of the test is this – Truth can’t be said to have been absolutely determined if the proof of it relies on Feelings, Opinions, Beliefs, Intellectualizing or Authorities. It can only be determined by objective (not FOBIA based) science. And he says that using science, he has been able to prove the existence of God and the credibility of the Bible. And harmony with what’s in the Bible lines up with creating peace and harmony in the world and oneself. A shortened version (12 minutes) of this proof can be seen at https://youtu.be/OaCcG_WUU9c.

Marcellino says, “I don’t know of anyone else who has figured these things out about God, the Bible and the Universe. Plus I can back the conclusions up with scientific proof.”

After interviewing Marcellino, Laura Gunderson of the Clackamas Review newspaper said this – “Dennis Marcellino has the answer. Actually, with an education that ranges from science and engineering to theology and psychology, Marcellino has many answers. But in his new book, Why Are We Here?, he chooses to answer the one question that has puzzled intellectuals for centuries.”

And Mark Victor Hansen, co-author of the Chicken Soup For The Soul series said,
“This is a very important book that is greatly needed at this time. I agree that the Bible should be the ultimate resource for life and living and that the world could greatly benefit from being logically and scientifically shown that this is true.”

This proves what I have been saying, the Democrats are so determined to destroy Trump they are willing to destroy the entire country {as far as it looks there are some Republicans the same way, I could name a few} They keep talking about changing the immigration laws. Wake up everybody, guess what we had them yet 70 years ago, There were quotas, you waited your turn, you had to prove who you were, you had to have a trade to make your own living, there were no free hand outs, if you had so much a sniffle you were held in quarantine till they were sure you were not infectious. All this went out the window when a certain Democrat president felt he owed it to the world to bring everyone and throw open the border.

This is a disgusting problem and one that never should have happened with proper management and leadership. The solution is easy. Build more facilities for the homeless, make it mandatory that they stay there and never live on the street anymore, and hire more people to keep all areas clean and free from bacteria. The cities have the money to do this. They just mismanage what they have.

Governor, thank you for exposing this repugnant situation in our (liberal) cities. I have a son (whose name and city I will not identify) in law enforcement in one of those liberal cities that is allowing their streets to be used as toilets and a place to exist inhumanly. He not only is concerned about himself and his fellow law enforcement individuals contacting a deadly disease, but the exposure he takes home to his family, anyone he arrests that has to ride in his police vehicle and basically anyone he comes in contact with. AND it is politically incorrect to raise his concerns to higher officials because the city mayor and council will not address nor even want the real exposure of its citizens to this real threat and danger.

Gov. Huckabee, my husband and I drive truck from PA to the Los Angeles area. It is absolutely heartbreaking the way the homeless are living here. You speak of the drugs on the streets. It is beyond imaginable. We were delivering to a place on Gladys and 7th. We received a ticket for parking on the street while we were unloading. In the meantime, there is a man who is 25’ away smoking crack from a bowl. The officer completely ignored this man when we pointed it out saying that we are there working, doing our job and trying to make a living while his person is doing nothing and smoking crack. Honestly, I believe the officials want people in that position of doing drugs. It’s sad and needs changed. Have a wonderful day sir!

I don't think there is any middle ground anymore. Both sides do not accept the other's views and as we have seen with BOTH past presidencies, the other side just makes it impossible for the president to do anything. The Democrats and Republicans are acting like a dysfunctional family and while they are busy fighting, the kids (in this case the citizens) are the ones suffering. We should really start looking at a way to an amicable divorce. I don't know how that would/could work but I'm afraid that if we don't, we are looking at a second Civil War.

Last December, my wife and I moved to Prescott, AZ, from Stevenson Ranch, CA, located about 35 miles North of LA. Prior to moving, my wife spent the prior eight years as the VP & CDO at The Midnight Mission deep in the heart of Skid Row. During her tenure, she experienced the rapid decline of that area. When she started, tents had to be removed during daylight hours. When that policy was changed, it caused a decline not only on Skid Row, but across the entire city.

During her tenure, there were times she became slightly ill because of “the creeping crud” that was going around the office. We knew it was due to the conditions outside the building. I admired her greatly for going down there every day but it finally became time to retire and she did.

I cannot thank you enough for writing about this problem and pointing out how this is affecting several large cities. Unfortunately, like you say, nothing will change in these cities until the current city governments are voted out and governments that care are voted in to replace them.

    Sincerely,
    Randall Phillips

It is so sad for me to know about the corruption in the sense of rats and feces and drug stuff on the streets of San Fran, which used to be one of my favorite cities in the US. I want to cry just to hear of it... Our California Government needs to do something about it, instead of making laws where law-abiding citizens are leaving this beautiful state in droves.......

Good morning, Thank you for another well written article that keeps Americans informed of so many issues going on in the world every day.
In commenting on the plight of some of the major leftest leaning cities, I'd like to say that while the pictures are appalling, an actual visit in person is horrifying. My husband and I grew up in the South, but now live near Portland, Oregon and recently traveled to San Francisco for a business conference. The wash of lost and broken humanity living on the streets is the saddest thing I have seen in my entire life living in the greatest country in the world. Christ said the poor would always be among us and our duty is to help anyone as much as we possibly can, but it is still heartbreaking to drive by yet another person asking for money on the street corners. The watchword has been NOT to give money, but to offer resources. There never seems to be enough resources to make a difference. I volunteer to help at a church where meals are served to anyone who is hungry and I know many people who reach out to help, but the tide of broken humanity only seems to grow. Anyway, thank you again for your article and I pray every day for the Savior to return. Best regards, Melinda Lucas

But....but....but aren't S.F. and L.A. full of sophisticates? "With-IT's"? (Just had to get that sharp stick in their eyes. Mea Culpa.) The only way to "handle" this sanitation problem is to set up isolated encampments in the desert. Bring in CDC and WHO teams and facilities, and move all the crappers and users there. At the same time, bleach the whole city-areas where this homeless population has been encamped. I can hear the screams of outrage from ACLU, PETA, Sierra Club, and others, but you WON'T get it done without separation. In addition, the "users" must be separated from the non-using population. You're not going to get rid of the rats. Down here, there's a saying that goes like this, "The only way to get rid of Kudsu is to walk away from it." The rat problem is a problem all by itself, but the homeless encampments are providing food and shelter for them, and in turn, the rats are providing transport of everyone's viral and microbial diseases to humans, without discrimination. And we both KNOW how it GOT this way! But until the election problems engineered by the Getty progeny and descendants (Brown, Newsome, Pelosi, etc) are solved, honest people in CA will just have to live with it. Judicial Watch has identified MANY problems with CA's elections. The NVRA has to be applied with Federal penalties. But who knows what effect Fed Penalties will have on a state that's already $2T in the hole. I know I don't want to bail them out!

You are absolutely correct. We need to get the leftist out and take back our Country. These morons are out to destroy and disarm Americans and invite nothing more than immigrants into America and give them everything while taking away from our own. We need the good lord to take the reins and we the American people need to stand and face our enemy that being the political left and get them out of our yards. It's time to clean house and take back our streets. I don't live in a big city and am thankful for that. I live in a little town of 600 people in Eastern Oregon and I wouldn't trade it for nothing. It is devastating to see how the big cities are going down the sewer. Sad indeed

leftism is a dismal failure...for decades. LA, Seattle (which dying according to FB day by day). Detroit died decades ago. Chicago is a war zone. One democratic mayor was charged with corruption and the second, black male is a failure. He HAS no solution to Baltimore's problems. De Blasio is in dire need of removal. NY is so pathetic in politics it's not even funny. There is only one solution, remove dems from the cities. conservatives or someone else needs to take over for about 20 years. All conservative cities I know of are thriving. NONE that are leftist are in any measure.

Ah, but the progressives are kind to the homeless, right? There are so many unintended consequences of so many progressive ideas. When we were more or less forced to close mental institutions because of their conditions, or other perceived problems, we did many of the troubled homeless people a huge disservice. Instead of working to improve conditions, treatment, , we closed them all in the name or “rights”. It is my opinion that if a person cannot find a means of taking care of their basic needs, society needs to take care of them and try to rehabilitate them. It is true that they lose some freedom for a time but that is why we take care of children. Dependence implies some loss of independence. Most of these folks badly need help, with mental disorders, substance abuse, or just plain coping with life. It is so wrong for us to allow them to live in these conditions. We cannot just throw money at them. They need help with the underlying issues. It is just like our problems with education. We throw more money at the problem to do more of the unsuccessful things and add layers if consultants and management, making more paperwork for teachers. These consultants come up with yet another teaching methodology. We give talented teachers very little room to just teach. Does anyone realize that in most other countries children wear school uniforms in public schools. That would cut down on competitiveness in appearance, and .i content would lead to better behavior. There would be pride in unity. It would also prevent young, developing girls from wearing short shorts and low cut clothes among hormone driven developing boys. Old fashioned as that is, modesty has its place. Let the children concentrate on learning, instead of the cleavage next to them. I have heard it said, some people cannot afforded uniforms. We furnish food for the impoverished children,, why not uniforms.

We want to insure integrity in our voting so why not sn ID. With today’s technology, photo IDs could easily be furnished at the time of registration if the the person did not have a drivers license.

I have ranted months ago about the demise of our major cities that are under Liberal and what is now know as the left Socialist party. Does America recognize what socialism will do to a Country if it is allowed to take a foot hold. I believe the lowest IQ people in this country will not see Socialism for what it is. Thats an issue our younger voting generation better figure out now. AOC will become correct the Country as we know today will be gone in 12 years once the plague of Socialism hits thats how long we have about 12 years everybody's money will run out. Thanks for being on the front lines, in this war against cultural Marxism. How do we educate the left leaning folks when we essentially have two media’s telling two different stories? I debate these people and they don’t have a clue! It’s a real problem.

Commentary continues below advertisement

An old fashioned, but practical, old lady

I too feel sorry for those who live in cities like LA., San Fransisco, and Seattle. The only solution I can offer is to pray that the leaders and whoever supports these cities will have their eyes opened. Obviously, Satan is working very hard to destroy our nation

Thank you for having the courage to speak out about this. It constantly amazes me how the left can be so blind and so agenda focused that they live out such a blatant double standard. So much of the voting public don't seem to think for and mindlessly adopt the leftist drivel...sickening and alarming.
