So, the Democrats refuse to vote for “Trump’s wall.”  Caravans didn’t change that.  A break before Congress reconvened didn’t change that.  A meeting between congressional leaders and President Trump on Wednesday didn’t change it.  More violent and heartbreaking deaths caused by criminals here illegally didn't change it, either.  Democrats say their opposition is because a wall is expensive (I’ll pause for your helpless, uncontrollable laughter), but we all know that’s not really why they’re fighting it.  The Democrats have never cared how much anything cost.
A $5 billion price tag is nothing to them.  A $25 billion price tag, which is much more appropriate for this project than the relatively small amount they’re bickering over, is chickenfeed.  Unless it’s got the name “Trump” attached, the price of anything has to go a lot higher than that before Democrats will balk.  Why, you’d have to add at least a couple more zeroes for them to think about it at all, and even then they might not care, depending on how “progressive” the project is.  Recall how thrilled the Democratic Congress was to spend an estimated $1 trillion for Obamacare, even though that figure could be kept from going higher only by creative accounting and, because of the ridiculously high deductibles, would only buy the symbolism of “coverage” for all.  No, the reason they don’t want this is because it’s Trump’s (meaning a political win for him), and because they’ve decided to have a big problem with the word “wall.”
Commentary continues below advertisement

But they’re wrong on both counts.  First of all, it’s not Trump’s wall --- it’s ours, America’s, and we can’t possibly have a secure border without a physical barrier, at least along certain stretches.  (Some parts of the border, because of terrain and other challenges, will require different and more technological forms of security, as well as more manpower.)  Democrats confess to be “for border security,” but that’s just one of their focus-grouped talking points, the kind of by-rote blah-blah-blah that generally goes unchallenged in the media unless someone like Stephen Miller is in the room.  Their claim to be in favor of border security is a joke; we all know they’re not seriously concerned about that, or we wouldn’t have sanctuary cities.  Trump is certainly not the first one to call for a wall or to support building one (including many Democrats who now say it “undermines our values” but who voted for it before as part of an older immigration bill), but he’s the first president to actually endeavor to get it done.  Unlike most politicians, he works to keep his promises.

Second, we’re playing word games here.  Democrats just love to fight over language, don’t they?  If they don’t like calling it a “wall,” which admittedly can evoke images of stone-cold, solid gray concrete that seals out out future Democratic voters –- I mean, aspirants to the American Dream, plus gang bangers and possible terrorists --- there are plenty of other words we could use.  And everyone knows that most of the “wall” wouldn’t be a solid wall at all, but a rather cool-looking yet highly impermeable structure made of tall steel slats.  The only thing set in concrete here is the Democrats’ opposition, because their idea of “negotiation” and "compromise" is when Republicans capitulate to them and they get exactly what they want.  Trump absolutely MUST NOT give in.  He needs an uncrossable line on this issue just as surely as we need one at the border.

Let’s stop playing semantic games.  If Democrats don’t like the word “wall,” there are numerous options.  Since they’re so big on “choice” (at least in one area of life), here’s a long list of choices for them to consider:
barrier
barricade
structural border protection
physical deterrent
perimeter safeguard
vertical obstruction
architectural obstacle
fortified periphery
structural defense
structural impediment
reinforced bulwark
fortification system
secure structure
border demarcation
border delineation
rampart
man-made embankment
border crossing hindrance
border crossing prevention
border partition
perimeter defense configuration
access restriction
trespass inhibitor
structural shield
border blockade
secure stronghold
illegal crossing circumvention
physical security measure
impermeable fabrication
national security buffer
unbreachable physical boundary
bastion
secure fence (as in the Secure Fences Act, which Democrats supported)
So, pick one.  Any one of these would do, and I’d be willing to bet that in bureaucratic government-speak there are many more.  All together now, “BUILD…..THE…..PERIMETER DEFENSE CONFIGURATION!”

Hey, we could just abbreviate it to “PDC.”

If they are SOOOO sure the "Wall" will Not work, why not allow the "wall" to get built and watch to see if it deters/ cuts out the majority of illegal immigration. If it does not work, Trump will get blamed and they won't have to pad the ballot boxes in 2020. They are afraid it will help and that is why they fight it. Put up or shut up, Democrats!!!

I feel this could all be resolved real fast if the border was closed completely until the wall (or whatever you want to call it) gets built. Let the GM cars and trucks set on THAT side of the border and rust to dust. There are a lot of US Citizens that don't care one iota about that. Let the fruit and vegetables ROT on that side of the border. Everything comes to a stand still. We would see right quick who would be caving in on the border wall.

I fully agree with your article about the "wall". The issue is not the wall, rather preventing President Trump to fulfill a basic promise to the American People and thus a "win". I keep hearing the Left talking about "comprehensive immigration reforms", but none so far has been able to articulate exactly what they mean by this "rhetoric" statement, constantly repeated by the Left-mass media. The solution is pretty simple to me: 1) change the law that gives rights to illegals; 2) stop chain immigration; 3) stop funding cities/states that defy federal law (sanctuary); 4) increase Legal immigration & select those who want to be part of America (assimilation); 5) stop sending aids to all countries who abuse their citizen and force mass exodus; 6) and most important, pass individual bills for these actions so the American People can see who's is for or against the security of our country. Congress will be forced to vote for or against and voters will know who's for the US and who are traitors. Finally, the President should stop taking the blame & criticism for the failures of Congress, including his "own" party. Keep the elected in Congress accountable!!! Mr. Huckabee, keep up sustaining America's values and freedom! BTW I have your book, "Character" and it has inspired me.

5 Billion is not affordable but sending billions more than that to foreign countries who would just as soon spit on us than give us the time of day is okay? During the Vietnam war, our esteemed leaders decided to install an electronic fence around the North Vietnam border to stop the to stop the flow of military supplies and troops from coming down the Ho Chi Minh Trail into South Vietnam. Yes, technology will stop them, just like the Democrats are trying to convince us that drones, cameras and sensors will stop the people from crossing our southern border. As a Forward Air Controller during this period, I watched hundreds of trucks passing through this electronic fence and directed hundreds of air strikes on these trucks. We did our best to stop them with air power and destroyed many of them, But, sadly many still got through as our leaders did not commit adequate resources to do the job. Yes, we can install all kinds of technology on our border, but without adequate walls it will require deploying thousands of troops or thousands more border control agents or all this technology will accomplish is to allow us to watch thousands of people cross over into our country. I believe that a wall or adequate fencing with monitoring cameras, sensing equipment and a rapid response force can secure our border. Then we need to fix our laws, stop employers from hiring undocumented laborers and rather than providing welfare, we provide deportation. Plus, I'm not holding my breath to see any of this happen until the lazy unconcerned majority of registered voters decide to get involved and get to the polls on election day. Sincerely, Major Bill

    1. I keep hearing the same song about how divisive we are as a country and how it is all Trump's fault. How is that? Because people don't like his tweets? They don't like his manners? Since when did one person's behavior cause so much turmoil? I'm so tired of hearing how he is to blame for all of the divisiveness when it is the "resistance" that is actually causing the rift. If you don't like a policy, vote for a change. If you don't like a law, write your congressman. As a civilized society, we have a means to make changes. Instead, the Democrats are bent on creating conflict and creating division so that they can "be the answer" to what they have created!
    2. For me, Romney just turned into another McCain. The day McCain voted against repealing Obamacare, he let a personal vendetta get in the way of the people of the Republican Party. It looks like Romney is heading the same direction.
    3. We need to continue to pray for our country.

  • Donna Yates

It doesn't matter what you name the wall because the Demonratic party will never give into Trump's demands to finance it. It isn't conducive to their agenda simply because it is Trump who is asking for the protection.
I agree with the person who commented before me that as US citizens we should be able to impeach those including Republicans who oppose border security. A country without borders is not a country. That is why EVERY country in the world has borders and rules/laws that prevents immigrants from illegally entering.
Every country has a legal process to enter their country. They also have laws that prevents illegal immigrants or any immigrants who are not legal citizens from voting in their countries. I say impeach those who don't want to follow the laws of the land the Constitution.
    Thank for your daily letters.

A lot of people don't watch Fox News and Hannity and have no idea of how much illegal imagination costs in dollars and human lives from the immigrants and the drugs that come with them. I hope that Trump will address the American people from the oval office and tell them why a wall is so important.

In all the years I have voted (in my youth democrat) I have never seen a more liberal, uncaring, antagonistic group of individuals. I bet the majority of middle class professionals (I'm retired now) switched from Democrat to Republican many years ago. This group does not represent our values. They would rather have America fail than support anything President Trump suggests. This group of individuals do not respect elections unless they are in their favor. I pray everyday for our country and our leaders including Democrats. I also cannot believe the media. I spent half my adult life watching ABC news but cannot even stand to turn on any main stream media or other news outlets. Fox News is where I get most of my news except for local. Even though we still have to filter some of what is said there. I know that you know all of this but I'm just getting it off my chest. LOL. Your daughter is doing a very good job. I know you are proud of her. Sincerely, Deborah Foster, Jonesboro, ARghv*9

Great idea, Mike!!
Would the Dems vote to fund Schumer's Security Fence?

While I am in agreement with your overall talking points in regards to "Trump's Wall"-- yes it is America's wall, and yes, call it anything you want, just build the blessed thing-- I have to take exception with one of your proposed alternate labels: "impermeable fabrication" sounds too much like a conservative term for anything spoken by someone from the left. That is just going to confuse them! Or was that the idea...?

Going thru one of my Bible study lessons, I could not help but think about how we have not learned from history. Nehemiah had the some problems we have trying to get a wall build. He faced these problems when God had him build the wall around Jerusalem. (Nehemiah 4-7)

Mr Huckabee, thank you for being the "voice of reason" and standing up for our country and it's citizens when it isn't popular to do so! We stand in support of President Trump and appreciate the fact that he wants a more secure border for our country! I don't know anyone else that could stand up against the constant rejection he has faced for two years.....I feel that God has placed him in our lives as our leader for a reason. I pray that he will be able to fulfill his ideals and promises he has made for the benefit of the US and her people!

I agree it is all Americans wall!!! We need an illegal immigrant barrier so bad on our southern border. I feel that the United States has become so unsafe for our kids and grandkids with the human trafficking that seems to be everywhere. I am from Arkansas and I feel that there are so many tax paying people that just can not take their blinders off to all that the Deep State is intending on doing to our country if we do not wake up!!! I would love to be able to do more to try to convince more people what is going on. We need more heroes like you to spread the word. Gob bless you.

Bill Clinton, Chuckie Schumer and Barack Obama touted that we cannot have the illegal aliens crossing our borders and putting a strain on the American people. So what in the blazes happened?

5 Billion is not affordable but sending billions more than that to foreign countries who would just as soon spit on us than give us the time of day is okay? Israel certainly doesn't need our funding, neither does Europe, Arab nations, NATO, United Nations, Japan, China, etc. (the list is endless).. When did we become the world's piggy bank. We can't sustain our own expenses here but we spend like we have a money tree at the White House Rose Garden. Stop the bleeding! Take care of business, HERE! Secure our borders. OUR borders!

Also, by these illegal aliens coming here, we have seen a rise in diseases (measles, whooping cough, tb, etc) that have been eradicated for years. There is no quarantine because there is no control of who they are. They just infiltrate the population willy nilly. No more Ellis Island. And if they are captured, are they quarantined for 30 days or so as a preventative? I don't know. Can anyone answer that?

The government want to push vaccinations on our own but lack the protection of its population from the illegal aliens. If you have a child of school age, they cannot attend until they have the forced upon vaccinations. Why the double standard?

I saw a T-shirt on Facebook today that fits how I feel about what is going on. It said “Our Forefathers would be shooting by now”. These people don’t represent us anymore.
