So, the Democrats refuse to vote for “Trump’s wall.”  Caravans didn’t change that.  A break before Congress reconvened didn’t change that.  A meeting between congressional leaders and President Trump on Wednesday didn’t change it.  More violent and heartbreaking deaths caused by criminals here illegally didn't change it, either.  Democrats say their opposition is because a wall is expensive (I’ll pause for your helpless, uncontrollable laughter), but we all know that’s not really why they’re fighting it.  The Democrats have never cared how much anything cost.
A $5 billion price tag is nothing to them.  A $25 billion price tag, which is much more appropriate for this project than the relatively small amount they’re bickering over, is chickenfeed.  Unless it’s got the name “Trump” attached, the price of anything has to go a lot higher than that before Democrats will balk.  Why, you’d have to add at least a couple more zeroes for them to think about it at all, and even then they might not care, depending on how “progressive” the project is.  Recall how thrilled the Democratic Congress was to spend an estimated $1 trillion for Obamacare, even though that figure could be kept from going higher only by creative accounting and, because of the ridiculously high deductibles, would only buy the symbolism of “coverage” for all.  No, the reason they don’t want this is because it’s Trump’s (meaning a political win for him), and because they’ve decided to have a big problem with the word “wall.”
Commentary continues below advertisement

But they’re wrong on both counts.  First of all, it’s not Trump’s wall --- it’s ours, America’s, and we can’t possibly have a secure border without a physical barrier, at least along certain stretches.  (Some parts of the border, because of terrain and other challenges, will require different and more technological forms of security, as well as more manpower.)  Democrats confess to be “for border security,” but that’s just one of their focus-grouped talking points, the kind of by-rote blah-blah-blah that generally goes unchallenged in the media unless someone like Stephen Miller is in the room.  Their claim to be in favor of border security is a joke; we all know they’re not seriously concerned about that, or we wouldn’t have sanctuary cities.  Trump is certainly not the first one to call for a wall or to support building one (including many Democrats who now say it “undermines our values” but who voted for it before as part of an older immigration bill), but he’s the first president to actually endeavor to get it done.  Unlike most politicians, he works to keep his promises.

Second, we’re playing word games here.  Democrats just love to fight over language, don’t they?  If they don’t like calling it a “wall,” which admittedly can evoke images of stone-cold, solid gray concrete that seals out out future Democratic voters –- I mean, aspirants to the American Dream, plus gang bangers and possible terrorists --- there are plenty of other words we could use.  And everyone knows that most of the “wall” wouldn’t be a solid wall at all, but a rather cool-looking yet highly impermeable structure made of tall steel slats.  The only thing set in concrete here is the Democrats’ opposition, because their idea of “negotiation” and "compromise" is when Republicans capitulate to them and they get exactly what they want.  Trump absolutely MUST NOT give in.  He needs an uncrossable line on this issue just as surely as we need one at the border.

Let’s stop playing semantic games.  If Democrats don’t like the word “wall,” there are numerous options.  Since they’re so big on “choice” (at least in one area of life), here’s a long list of choices for them to consider:
barrier
barricade
structural border protection
physical deterrent
perimeter safeguard
vertical obstruction
architectural obstacle
fortified periphery
structural defense
structural impediment
reinforced bulwark
fortification system
secure structure
border demarcation
border delineation
rampart
man-made embankment
border crossing hindrance
border crossing prevention
border partition
perimeter defense configuration
access restriction
trespass inhibitor
structural shield
border blockade
secure stronghold
illegal crossing circumvention
physical security measure
impermeable fabrication
national security buffer
unbreachable physical boundary
bastion
secure fence (as in the Secure Fences Act, which Democrats supported)
So, pick one.  Any one of these would do, and I’d be willing to bet that in bureaucratic government-speak there are many more.  All together now, “BUILD…..THE…..PERIMETER DEFENSE CONFIGURATION!”

Hey, we could just abbreviate it to “PDC.”

I do. Not enough to stop much, maybe (they will go under or over) but would be a deterrent and a help to a much larger border patrol force.
The new socialist president in Mexico wants to make some changes within a 15 mile range of the border. (Double the minimum wage, lower taxes, etc) which is a fine idea but should be applied to the entire country.

One thing I do know is if Trump doesn't stand pat he won't win in 2020. This is a major concern with those who elected him and if he caves it will be an unrecoverable mistake. He was elected on that promise to make America Safe and to fail it just might mean his failure to be re-elected. Governor Huckabee,

You have a unique way of putting the focus on what's really going on in these situations. You've done it again with the issue of border security. We all know that Democrats are concerned about losing potential Democratic voters because you can't be "for" Sanctuary Cities and actually "for," real security at the border!

You also accurately point out that the issue is that the barrier is inaccurately portrayed as Trump's Wall. I love all the alternate names you've come up with for the Democrats to choose from.
I am an American citizen and I am a Christian and a conservative and I voted for Donald Trump for many reasons. One of the top reasons was that I have long been appalled that America doesn't act like a sovereign nation! I want our country to be safe and secure and that cannot happen without a physical barrier on our southern border! I'm angry too that many Republicans don't seem to be as concerned about it as they should be.
Thank you, Mike, for always breaking it all down for us with pinpoint accuracy and humor. You always make my day.

    01/03/2019 02:14 PM

The Democrats have been trying to define / alter / delete legitimate, meaningful words from the dictionary for literally DECADES now!
First, it was the word "God" or "religion" in the Founding Documents. Even I, in my "uninformed, pre-college state" realized that the Founders were 100% Christian or Christian-affirming; there were no Buddhists, Native Americans, Muslims, Zoroastrians, etc., involved in the formation of our Republic. (Even so, when I taught in public school several decades later, my English textbook solemnly stated that the Iroquois Indian Nation had given the Founding Fathers the idea of a confederation -- presumably with references to the Great White Spirit already in translation mode!! I KNEW that many of the Founding Fathers had studied Latin, Hebrew, and Greek -- as well as French -- in their college days, but I was "surprised" to learn that they were fluent in Native American Iroquois!!)

As a young college student in the early 1970's, I was further flabbergast and frustrated to have to argue with an entire "humanities" class at the University of Maryland that the word "baby" was not synonymous with "fetal tissue." (The former was brought into being at conception; the latter referred to an organ or part of the skeleton of that same baby.) Yet -- amazingly -- even professors insisted that preborn babies were not only merely "fetal tissie" until after birth, but they went through a "fish" stage, in which they had gills!!!! Of course, REAL science has utterly disproved that pseudo-fact, and we now know that preborn infants are LIVING human beings!

But I digress...once society allowed Democrats and liberals to twist the meaning of words in such egregious ways, it was a short step to twisting reality. And that is precisely what is happening. Wrong is called "right"; evil is called "good." The result? We have slipped into moral chaos.

Since they’re so big on “choice” (at least in one area of life), here’s a long list of choices for them to consider:

secure stronghold
illegal crossing circumvention
physical security measure
impermeable fabrication

Look the complaint among many last week was "Trump said Mexico was going to pay for the wall" well let's have Mexico "pay for the wall" by taking the 5B in the 10 B approved for Mexico and some Central American country for their border safety and use it on the wall on the Northern Mexican Boarder so it will help Mexico AND the US, Then Mexico WILL be paying for the wall.

Mr. Huckabee, I so appreciate the stand that you are taking and the effort and time you put into this information you send out. I think the democrats have an agenda to not do anything that President Donald Trump asks for. and, it is we the American people that suffers from this. But, at the same time the American people (large majority) are watching all this and there will be another election come up that will require voters to vote. So, I am hoping they (the people) will take all this into consideration at that time. God bless.......

    Dear Governor,
As usual, you have hit the nail on the head. Thank you for sharing your common sense and for your dedication to our Nation's security. Trump must not give in! To do so would be the end of our Party. He must stay the course and fight to keep his promise.

How about Nancy Pelosi finally pays her own way home instead of taxpayers paying for private jet, pilot and fuel every time she goes back and forth. We could put that money toward the wall (barrier). Also, why not have her refund the money spent over the years doing this!
We don't have royalty in this country or do we?

Spending the majority of my time in Mexico (as a missionary with church, school, orphanage, outreaches etc) I can tell you that most people here don't think a barrier would help.
There is too much corruption here to convince me that "the government" here cares much about the citizens.
God is the only answer for Mexico...as He is for the USA.

I so agree with you!! I do not care what it is called and I do know it is NOT a “wall” in all places or even in the visual most apply to that word! However, it must be a real stop configuration! LDC or whatever!! just get it done!

An excellent article! Just hope the Repressives all read it. The whole thing is so absurd. Americans can see through

I agree, word for word. He better not give in!!! This is one time I don’t care if the entire government shuts down. Maybe when when a Democrat politician or one of Their relatives DIES or gets injured or raped by an ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT THEN They might vote for and push it.!!!!! We must, have to, dig in, and stand our ground here!!!! Make it a 2020 issue right up to Election Day if necessary!!

One thing I do know is if Trump doesn't stand pat he won't win in 2020. This is a major concern with those who elected him and if he caves it will be an unrecoverable mistake. He was elected on that promise to make America Safe and to fail it just might mean his failure to be re-elected. Also his bring back our troupes is a good thing but believing he has beat ISIS is really naïve. They are even in this country and in local, state and Federal governments thanks to Barry Soertoro our last president. He hasn't defeated anyone as they have just changed their tactics knowing they can't defeat us on the battle field but can use our own Constitution against us.

Well said Sir, and spot on I'm sure, since Democrats hate EVERY thing Trumps says/does 24/7. No matter the subject, they're 180 out of 99% of what he's talking about on a daily basis. Didn't we elect Adults to Congress, or was it a lot of Children minded adults? I would hope, if 3 people talked about the best way to do something, that two of them would concur on the best way, implement it and move on. These children in Congress act like 7th graders more concerned about which seat they have in the class room than what they stand to learn from the teacher. HOW can Adults be elected by the voters, make a million promises they're going to improve the world for us, then sit around complaining day after day, week after week, earning their big FAT Paycheck, and accomplishing NOTHING? I'm embarrassed for our country this is who are making decisions for our future, Children minded Adults. And WHY is it being allowed to happen without the FEW Normal Mature Adults intervening and explaining to them how they're screwing up so badly? The two sides bicker back and for, have for a solid 2 years now, and lost many opportunities to improve our country. WHY is this continuing to happen Sir, WHY?

I couldn't decide among all those choices, and decided to call it just a plain ol' WALL. President Trump most hang tough on this, and put their feet to fire until they listen to reason! He has a lot of people, ICE, the border patrol, US Military, behind him. All the Democrats have are Chuck and little Nan. No contest! Do it.

    01/03/2019 02:27 PM

    Sincerely,

    Cheryl Reinig
