Reader Response on "Medicare for All"

2 minute read

June 30, 2019 |

My commentary about “Medicare For All” as presented by the Democrat presidential candidates brought in some outstanding letters from readers, many of whom are actually on Medicare and know the costs and how it works in practice.  (It is NOT free; that would be Medicaid.)  I encourage you to check those out.

In the meantime, here is a thoughtful response from someone who served his country for 25 years in the military and earned his enrollment in a select single-payer program called “Tricare For Life.”  This seems to be what young American socialists and even immigrants who are not citizens think they are entitled to, by virtue of...existing, I guess.  Thank you for your service, sir, and for your wisdom as well.

From Alan S:

As a retired military member, I have Tricare For Life as my secondary to Medicare. I earned that right, which the Congress tried to take away (lifelong medical care). Thanks to folks like Bud Day, USAF BGen retired and deceased, we fought for and retained part of this cancelled promise in the form now of Tricare, for which I pay. I am fortunate to have it, but I do not want to lose it so that those who are not even citizens can have the same healthcare that I gave 25 years of service to "earn.”

Single payer is what I have, but I really did earn it. Those who have individual healthcare plans, now that Obamacare has been modified, are better off than they would be by sharing the “Medicare For All” plan that is proposed by the left. Either one has a price tag, but with the former you have choices. With the latter you have delays, limited services, and no choices.

The giveaways for what I earned or paid for are appealing to a younger generation that has been lied to by my classmates from the 60's that are now college professors. Socialism as defined by the 20+ Democrat candidates, is Christmas year-round. Perhaps these accolytes of the left should spend a few weeks in pleasure spots of the world like Cuba or Venezuela, and see what socialism really is like. Using examples like Denmark or Sweden is a false narrative. They are not socialist nations in the mold of what Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren want.

We who fought for our nation, although no longer in uniform, need to continue to fight for what is real, not for what the left aspires to. I for one, am up for the fight. God Bless America and God Bless You.

Kudos for the article and thank you for your service Alan S...I never served, but am the daughter of an Army & Navy Vet, the sister of an Airforce Vet, the widow of an Army Vet, and wife of an Army Vet and the mother of a retired Naval Officer. I have seen and heard all of this and in my 60's now, know that medicare WILL NOT cover everything unless you PAY for it...Severaly hundreds a month infact, depending on the plan and the meds you are on! The DEMS are idiots who have GOVERNMENT healthcare...term limits and the promise of no benefits when they get voted out will fix most of this!

Medicare as IS needs to compete with services & rates by Region.
Which state pays more or less for same services.
    Sample new services:
    Organic RX
    Bionic limbs
    New RX
    Wellness resorts, plans.
    Organic diet?
    Medical Marijuana.
    CBD Oil
    Medical tourism??
All at competitive rates & acess.
CUT DC bureaucracy alone for HHS & Medicare.
    Save $$$
NO Medicare for ALL, Yes NOT Illegals.

Wealthy residents of Canada, often come to the US and pay out of pocket for testing such as an MRI to rule out a brain tumor, may have a 3 to 6 month wait time. As a R.N. , i have seen it. Also, when older people become seriously sick, the government chooses what and how much treatment they receive. Not the patient and their MD. How can we trust the government with our medical care when we know how poorly they treat US veterans most of the times?

Ditto. I served for 24 years and when I enlisted 40 years ago, the promise was free healthcare for life. The left took that away and now they want to take it away again.

Medicare (that folks pay for all their lives) only works because not everyone has it. Someone, in this case, folks not yet eligible for Medicare, supplement the cost of medical care. If everyone was GIVEN Medicare, then our medical system would collapse. Don't be fooled, people....NOTHING is free...not even Medicare. WE paid for it all our working lives, and continue to pay for it in retirement........AND you MUST have a SUPPLEMENT or you're on the hook for all that Medicare DOESN'T cover...and that's a LOT!

I agree with him. Nobody is entitled to anything free. You have to have a job work and earn what you need and want. This is the only way America will continue to work and be a great country. Socialism does not work.

I had a friend in Sweden whose mother died waiting for medical assistance. My friend shared that the waiting list for a particular procedure that her mother needed was a contributing factor for her mother's death. This is not the only friend I have in a European country that died as the result of a long wait list or because the patient was considered too old to receive treatment. The persons were under 60 years old!

Love this one, Mike! My husband and I are both veterans, although, I only served 10 years. My husband served 20. He has the same medical that the gentleman talked about in the testimony above - Medicare and TriCare for Life. . I have TriCare because I’m a military spouse. People forget that family members serve, too!

People don’t understand that Medicare isn’t free! Every recipient of Medicare pays a monthly premium as well as paid into the system during their working career. For some that was a healthy some of money.

We must try to re-educate folks to that fact. Maybe some of the conservative news folks should bring a person on TV to explain how this all works. Have some young folks in the audience to bring a couple pay stubs with them. Show them where they are already paying for Medicare. I wonder if some of these folks behave Medicare and Medicaid confused!

We have a spiritual fight going I. In our country for people’s hearts and minds.
