As you know, I welcome all points of view and am fine with being put in the “hot seat” to support my own.  So here’s a letter that came in Thursday from reader Pernell D. regarding my commentary on “Trump’s Wall.”

Pernell:

The money spent on something that is not needed and is impractical instead of solutions that are needed is a political farce. There are places that need a physical wall of some kind and the money should go to fix security infrastructure. This is not about border security, but is purely political. We need to enforce the visa laws and other effective solutions. Gangs, drug trafficking, isn't going to be fixed this way, remember, El Chapo. Plus, the Dems wanted to give Trump his money to appease him, but he refused because of DACA. Why doesn't Trump have the Russians pay for, they owe him that for betraying our country. I hope I hear the Dems say "Lock him up". Thanks, ex-Conservative Republican.

Me:

Thanks for writing, Pernell.  I don’t know what turned you into an ex-conservative, but if it’s mostly a matter of today’s political climate and Trump’s bombastic style, I hope you’ll re-thnk that at some point.

The money at stake here is really such a small “down payment” that it makes little sense to use fiscal restraint as an argument against a border barrier.  You appear to agree with one thing I said:  that there are places where an effective physical barrier is needed and other places where different solutions must be found.  (For example, we have places in Texas where the border is in the middle of a river.)  But let’s get started on constructing the barrier where we know it will work, as we continue to develop a comprehensive plan for border control.

RELATED READING: "Trump's Wall": So don't call it Trump's, and don't call it a wall

You also won’t find any disagreement from me on the need to enforce visa laws.  In fact, when it comes to the enforcement of immigration laws, you’ll find a lot more disagreement on the Democratic side than you will here.  And legislators really needs to fix laws that tie the hands of our immigration officials at the border, but don’t expect that from this Congress.

Trump has shown willingness to negotiate on DACA, etc., to get the necessary appropriations.  At this point, it appears to be the Democrats who have dug in and refuse to do anything that helps Trump get “his wall.”  And THAT’S where it gets, as you say, “purely political.”  Complain to Sen. Chuck Schumer about that.  (He was for a barrier at the border before he was against it.)

Your mindset becomes clear when you sign off by accusing Trump of “betraying our country” with the Russians.  For literally years now, we here at Huckabee.com have been examining all aspects of the “Trump/Russia” investigation with an electron microscope and can find no evidence to support such an accusation.  We’re not playing politics with this and if we had something that implicated Trump, we would say so.  Certainly we would not stand by and let any president, Democrat or Republican, betray his country!  But what we see are poorly-sourced “news” stories that the media eagerly run with but that turn out to be false or at best unproven, “journalism’s” equivalent of the Steele dossier.

If it’s determined that Michel Cohen actually went to Prague and “colluded” on Trump’s behalf –- and with his knowledge –- to win in 2016, then we can pick this conversation up again.  But for now, the hard evidence we see for lawbreaking and even some Russian “collusion” happens to be associated with the Clintons.

Again, thanks for writing; I really want to hear and address opposing views.  At the same time, I hope you’ll take Dr. Huckabee’s advice for treating Trump Derangement Syndrome:  avoid CNN and MSNBC, and read my newsletter twice a day!

    Huck;
Guess this person hasn't been following the news. Trump offered to fix DADA, to the tune of 1.5 million persons, in exchange for funding for the wall. The DemonRATs won't even agree to that, they don't want to fix problems, all they want is political issues so they can continue to lie to the public about how caring they are. The one and only thing they care about is getting power and abusing it!!

When is FOX News or One America News going to run an ongoing segment showing pictures of the fortified homes/estates of Democratic Congresspersons -- with the WALLS around their homes, security cameras, armed guards, electronic gates in the driveway, electronic surveillance on all their windows and doors, etc?
When are the news programs going to remind the Democrats elected to Congress of their sworn oath to support and defend the US Constitution against all enemies....? That oath applies to foreign immigrants who are breaking our laws by entering our country illegally.
The Democrats appear to be very willing to spend billions of our taxpayer dollars taking care of foreign immigrants who are breaking our laws by entering our country illegally (food stamps, welfare, subsidized housing, social security, etc.), but how many of these Congressional Democrats have offered to personally sponsor these foreign immigrants by taking them into THEIR HOMES and being responsible for them? NOT ONE !!! The hypocrisy of the Congressional Democrats knows no limits !!!!!

I fully agree with a Wall in places where needed. People need to listen to the Border Patrol members on how effective a Wall is, and will assist their controlling the border.
My point is, Fox News needs to send cameras to all Democrates homes that have walls, to show they believe
walls work. As I heard, Pres. Obama's home in DC is walled. Pelosie in California, Beto O'Rourke in El Paso. No doubt, many others do, if investicated. This needs to be broadcasted repeatedly to show how phony their opposition to a wall is. Ty Coleman

Mike Huckabee, I generally agree with you. Walls/tall fences work where ever they have been built. Even if a wall/barriers only curtailed drug trafficking by 50%, it would more than justify the nominal cost of building and maintaining the wall/barriers. If the "wall" curtailed illegal alien migration by 50%, then the cost saving to taxpayers would be $50billion/year, and would reduce gang related crime, etc.
We also need to fix the laws and treat illegal alien migration (invasion) as true criminals.
    I suggest the following:
Criminalize as a felon illegal alien migrants.
No welfare, social security, or other taxpayer funded benefits
    No Chain immigrant preferences
    No lottery VISA
Enforce VISA overstays as felony crimes
Change Birthright Citizenship to be given if and only if at least on parent is a valid US Citizen
Felony Criminalize the mayors and city councilpersons of Sanctuary Cities, like wise for county, state politicians.
Deport immediately all illegal aliens when they are caught for any reason.

Require a legal immigrant to apply for citizenship within 10 years and require that they must demonstrate English language competency at least at the 8th grade level (read, written, and spoken).

The idea is to reduce/eliminate the motive for illegal alien migration.

I also recommend that legal alien migrants be processed faster and given a temporary status which would be revoked if after 10 years they had not taken the English Language test, US Citizenship test, and /or if convicted of any felony or participated in any gang activity. If revoked then immediate deportation.

It appears that the current Democrat Party line is this notion, that anything good for the President is now, Bad for America. Of course this is not true. We desire freedom, not tyranny. Freedom has no room for the Democrat Party line that promotes lawlessness on any level, while promoting it's ideals that have not worked so far to help the downtrodden here. We need immigration reform. Part of that could be the Wall. But we will get neither from the Democrats who have sold out the country in favor of illegal immigration as well as too much immigration. I want to see 1.) All illegal immigrants immediately deported; 2.) The law changed so that anchor-babies are nor granted American citizenship; 3.) An end to welfare for immigrants --- period; 4.) An Immigration Merit System with points for a.) Speaking English, b.) Having a job or good job skills, c.) No serious illness, no reliance on welfare; and 5.) I want to see an end to Muslim immigration. The risk to our republic is too high to allow this to continue. Britain and France are all the proof we need.

I agree with Joyce. The president needs to address the nation with a speech that explains why the democrats are so wrong. Marsha Kramer on CBS, finally confronted Chuck Schumer on the wall. She called him out on his 2006 and 2009 speeches that he said we need a fence or something to keep the illegals out. A lot of democrats don’t watch Fox News. Having President Trump on all news stations would be big for the wall and not so good for the democrats.

    Mike:

It doesn't matter what Pernell claims he was. What he is now is a naive liberal who buys the cant of the people who want to give us open borders and sanctuary cities. Right after saying that what President Trump proposes is a political farce, he says, "There are places that need a physical wall of some kind and the money should go to fix security infrastructure." I assume that he is convinced that his view is not a farce. Well, guess what? His is Trump's proposal: wall where it will act as an effective barrier (700+ miles of a near 2,000 mile border), Border Patrol, technology and perhaps some fencing for the rest.
There are something like 42 formal entry points along the border. These exist where both civilization (population centers) and roads exist. The "wall" would be used to either side of these entry points out to areas relatively unpopulated and not serviced by roads. No wall would be necessary where there are stretches of barren and brutal areas where few people venture. These remote areas can be reached by only the most rugged all-terrain vehicles or on foot. There are also areas where the physical barriers of cliffs, rivers and trecherous mountain terrain are natural barriers. Border Patrol, freed up by secure barriers around commercial entry points would have less open stretches to monitor with personnel and technology.
Illegal crossings by "asylum seekers", despite a fractional criminal element, are not the main concern. Some of the most lethal criminal cartels in the world are based south of that border and rely on drug trafficking, migrant extortion and exploitation, and child-smuggling as income streams. All of these activities increase crime, addiction and dependent classes of residents on this side of the border. This flow of illegality skews the cultural stability of the United States.
Immigration is good if it is legally controlled and paced to allow assimilation. Only through assimilation are immigrants able to fully become American citizens with equal opportunities.
So, Pernell, get the emotional and rational sides of your brain connected and realize that you are Trump.

I know a lot of anti-Trumpers who seem to have lost their ability of rational thought. When you confront them asking what is Trump doing to affect you negatively? The four main reasons given are; he lies, he is a dictator, he only cares about himself, and he has orange hair. To apply rational thought to those, the only one that comes close to being factual is the color of his hair. Not even sure of that because I am color blind.

    01/04/2019 11:17 AM

    Mike,
Thank you so much for your common sense analyses. I am just so astounded at the gullibility of much of the American people in regards to all things Trump. He is working so hard to protect us and it really breaks my heart for him and his family at the pure venom spewed toward him every minute by CNN and MSNBC and the like. We must look so stupid to world leaders who hate America and what we stand for. We have fallen so far away from the Christian principles this country was meant to stand for. I pray for our President and ask our Holy God to give him strength to endure the hate that is sure to be coming his way for the next 2 years. Satan is certainly smiling at all of this. Trump is a good man I believe and though he has faults like all of us he is doing a great job for this country. Something I would like to mention - I come from a small Georgia town and my first knowledge of Donald Trump came when he rescued a farm for a family in Burke County. The Hill family were on the VERGE of losing everything Mr Hill had worked for his whole life. Sadly Mr Hill committed suicide on the eve of an auction to sell the family farm due to the severe drought and other factors back in the late 70’s or early 80’s. Many families lost everything then. Donald Trump got wind of the plight of Mrs Hill and intervened and saved that farm for her and her family. She was the sweetest little Christian lady and I will never forget the article that I read in the local paper (The True Citizen) after she had passed. It was a page from her prayer journal praying for Donald Trump and his family. The article also contained photos of our future president hosting the Hill family at a luncheon in New York City. Also Mike he paid for a surgery for Betsy (Mrs Hills teenage daughter) to have an eye correction that made such a difference in her life. I know this because she was a friend of my younger sister and still is to this day. Trump is brash and caustic at times but I believe he has a good heart and loves and wants the best for our country and is fighting for us all every day just like he did for that family against the banks that were trying to take that family’s farm. I believe Betsy may have spoken on his behalf at a rally when he was running. I hope I haven’t taken up too much of your time but I wanted you to know of this small thing he did for a small town family that was not a small thing to them. God Bless President Trump!! God bless you as well Mike. Thanks for all you do!

    Mr. Huckabee:

Excellent response to this Pernell character. You were much more cordial than I would have been, but that is my failing at times. Judging from what he posted, the likely biggest untruth in the whole post was that he is a former conservative. He either doesn't understand what being conservative means, or he never was one to begin with.

The government "shutdown" is just ridiculous. Since President Trump is not taking a salary, it is my opinion that the people in Congress not representing WE THE PEOPLE should be the ones whose paychecks are stopped--every Senator and every Representative in the house who is obstructing and not even trying to work for a solution---GO WITHOUT YOUR PAY, YOU IDIOTS!! They ALL have security guards and walls around their residences, but want the rest of us to be vulnerable. WALLS DO WORK to keep out undesirables--it is a rotten shame that we have so many of their kind in our Congress--they are the ones who need to be cut off and shut down---until they get serious about working for a solution--BUILD THE WALL, STOP BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP, and ENFORCE THOSE WHOSE VISAS HAVE EXPIRED--do away with ILLEGAL DACA's--something our Muslim President Obama did without congressional approval! If President Trump were to shut them off, I bet we would get some action from them--louse demon c RATS!!!!!

So many in the political arena in Washington have walls around their homes - for protection!! Tucker Carlson doesn't and look what happened to him. It could have been so much worse! We need the wall and it's not Trump's wall....it's OUR wall...the US citizens wall. If folks would read the Bible they would see there are walls everywhere to keep loved ones safe and evil ones out. Outsiders are welcome but come in legally. We are paying a horrible price for neglecting good choices of government officials. I could go on and on but I pray folks would check and recheck their sources on what their government official stands for. So much corruption and they hate Trump more than they love our country and what it has always -in the past- stood for!! Sad......

Lock up and throw away the key, Pelosi, Schummer, Obama for the illegal and un-constitutional acts they performed against the country during their eight years of control, that would give the voting citizens a feeling of justice and then we can get on with the wall building and other business of the day that is important to the citizen voters of this country.

Immigration is good if it is legally controlled and paced to allow assimilation. Only through assimilation are immigrants able to fully become American citizens with equal opportunities.

    Mike,
Thank you so much for your common sense analyses.

Mike - Trump needs to address the nation - NOW ! Buy time on ALL the networks.
There is so much anti Trump wall propaganda / shutdown that he's looking bad. Sarah and Kristin talk statistics but they talk on Fox. Surely he can make a good point and convince the country to go " pro- border security"

    Huck;

It will not help those who climb over our borders either.

  • Darrell Mordente

    01/04/2019 01:03 PM

  • Arlene Hurley

    01/04/2019 12:22 PM

I agree with Joyce. The president needs to address the nation with a speech that explains why the democrats are so wrong. Marsha Kramer on CBS, finally confronted Chuck Schumer on the wall. She called him out on his 2006 and 2009 speeches that he said we need a fence or something to keep the illegals out. A lot of democrats don’t watch Fox News. Having President Trump on all news stations would be big for the wall and not so good for the democrats.

  • James Norvell

    01/04/2019 12:03 PM
