Invasion: Six Days and Counting

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine entered its sixth day Tuesday, with Putin showing no signs of backing off despite worldwide condemnation, accusations of war crimes, and banking and oil sanctions devastating the Russian economy and sending the ruble plummeting in value. Even Switzerland dropped its famous neutrality and cut off Russian access to Swiss banks.

This is the link for the latest bulletins from Fox News:

https://www.foxnews.com/live-news/russia-ukraine-war-day-6

With his belief that this would be a quick and easy invasion blowing up in his face, Putin seems to be getting more dangerously angry and irrational. He’s even put Russia’s nuclear forces on high alert. This article by Dennis Santiago at Redstate.com contains valuable information about the relative strengths of the Russian and Ukrainian forces, Putin’s thinking and his tragic miscalculations, and what should be done next to get him to climb down.

Here are some of the latest developments: The European Union accepted Ukraine’s emergency application for admission, which would allow it access to Europe’s power grid and ally it further with the rest of Europe against Russia.

Satellite images show Russia has sent a 40-mile convoy of “killing machines” to threaten the capital city of Kyiv, and Russia state media are warning of imminent attacks on the city.

Elon Musk sent a shipment of his Starlink Internet terminals to Ukraine at President Zelinsky’s request, to restore Internet access cut off by Russia.

There is a claim that a militia of mercenaries known as the Wagner Group has been flown in from Africa with orders to kill President Zelinsky and other prominent Ukrainians. Key line: “The Kremlin once again denied it has any influence over Wagner and suggested that (its reputed boss Yevgeny) Prigozhin only provides catering services to the Russian government.” I assume that “catering to Putin” means assassinating people.

The CEO of Shell Oil announced that Shell is cutting its business dealings with Russia and pulling out of the Nord Steam 2 pipeline project.

Here’s a photo that went viral that gives you an idea of Putin’s unstable frame of mind.

And as I always remind you, breaking news from a war zone often is unreliable. It can turn out to be an honest mistake or well-disguised propaganda. For instance, we already mentioned that the Ukrainian troops on Snake Island who defied the Russian warship were captured, not killed as originally reported. We’ve also learned that the former Miss Ukraine hadn’t actually joined the fighting but just posed with a prop rifle in a show of support. But all things considered, I'd still rather have her fighting beside me than Justin Trudeau. There are other stories, too, that we didn’t cover but that have since been debunked or amended. The National Pulse rounds up a few, some of them actually from movies or video games.

Moderate Democrats: Out of touch with most Americans

The polls have Democrats looking forward to the November elections with as much optimism as bugs look forward to a visit from the Orkin man. So between now and then, their friendly media will be trying to gaslight us in all sorts of ways to convince us that they’re not responsible for the messes they’ve created. You’ll be expected to believe that they never went overboard with COVID restrictions, that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is responsible for Putin invading Ukraine, and that most Democrats in Washington are patriotic moderates who don’t back the far-left radical ideas pushed by “The Squad.”

When you hear that, remember this:

In a move that some pundits are calling “a gift to Republicans,” Senate “Majority” Leader Chuck Schumer forced a show vote on a bill that would have made it legal to perform abortions at any time. It would have wiped away every state-level protection, making it legal to kill a child in the womb at nine months if a doctor says there’s a risk to the mother’s health -- despite the fact that obstetricians say there’s almost no circumstance under which an abortion at that stage is less dangerous to the mother’s health than birthing the baby.

As of that weren’t radical enough, check out this, from the Fox News write-up:

“The bill also claims that abortion rights qualifies as ‘reproductive justice’ seeking to address ‘systems of oppression, lack of bodily autonomy, white supremacy, and anti-Black racism.’ While the bill claims that abortion restrictions ‘are a tool of gender oppression,’ it also clarifies that despite using ‘the terms ‘woman’ and ‘women,’’ legislators intend to ‘protect all people with the capacity for pregnancy—cisgender women, transgender men, non-binary individuals, those who identify with a different gender, and others—who are unjustly harmed by restrictions on abortion services.’”

That’s right: it’s “racist” to oppose abortion, even though blacks make up 14% of the population but black women get 36% of all abortions. Since Roe v. Wade, about 20 million black babies have been killed by abortion, more than the entire black population of America in 1960.

https://azcapitoltimes.com/news/2020/02/25/abortion-the-overlooked-tragedy-for-black-americans/

And here’s now all those “moderate” Democrats voted: The House already passed it 218-211, with every Democrat except Rep. Henry Cuellar supporting it. And in the Senate, it was blocked by filibuster from coming to a vote by 48-46. Six Senators didn’t vote. Joe Manchin was the only Democrat to join Republicans in voting against it. And Manchin and Bob Casey (who did vote to bring it to debate) were the only Democrats who didn’t co-sponsor it.

How do these allegedly moderate Democrats who sponsored and voted for it compare to average Americans? A recent Marist poll found that only 17% of Americans think abortion should be available at any stage of pregnancy, as do only 31% of Democrats. The Democrats in Congress are so far left, they’re even out of touch with other Democrats.

So when you’re voting in November, unless you’re voting for Joe Manchin or Henry Cuellar, remember that all that talk about moderate Democrats in Congress is, as our President would put it, “malarkey.”

Zelensky: An old-fashioned hero

This is an interesting article by Tom McTague in the Atlantic, about how Western nations are rallying to support Ukraine and its courageous President Zelensky without actually getting into the fighting themselves.

https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2022/02/volodymyr-zelensky-courage-ukraine-russia/622948/?utm_source=feed

He makes the point that Zelensky has suddenly come to embody many old-fashioned Western virtues reminiscent of great men of the last century like Winston Churchill: those who were willing to stand and fight against impossible odds for their country and their independence.

For too long in America and other Western nations, we’ve allowed these traits that should be celebrated to be denigrated and for heroes like Churchill to be maligned and “canceled.” Now that we’re seeing one rise in front of our very eyes, people worldwide are rallying to support him. They can see the truth about what’s good and right when it’s not at a distance and being obscured by lies and propaganda. It’s as if nobody needs an old-fashioned hero – until we need one. This has prompted some commentators to ask how we can expect our leaders to fight for traditional Western and American values when they don’t even believe in them themselves anymore.

Of course, this is the Atlantic, so McTeague gets some things wrong due to political bias (for instance, it’s idiotic to claim that the “Trump view of the world” is that China and Russia are no worse or better than the United States. If any politician of recent years believed in American exceptionalism and calling out bad guys on the international stage, it was Trump, and he was roundly attacked for it.) But if you’d like some food for thought, this is at least a good appetizer.

They're still keeping secrets about Hunter Biden

Does it strike anyone as fascinating that the hotspots of world tension right now –- Ukraine, Beijing and Moscow –- are the very places the family of our sitting President, led by son Hunter, has done business to the tune of billions of dollars? It boggles the mind. As Russia continues its invasion of neighbor Ukraine, the revelations concerning Hunter Biden’s longtime business affairs in that part of the world, and in China, continue as well.

The New York Post’s Miranda Devine, author of the bestselling LAPTOP FROM HELL, reports that Hunter’s old business partner Devon Archer was sentenced on Monday for his role in a scheme to defraud a cash-poor Native American tribe. This is something he appears to have been doing separately from his work with Hunter.

In fact, at the time of his sentencing, he read a statement explaining that at the time of the fraud he was “doing too many things at once...all the business deals I was involved with and the overseas activities.” He expressed “deep remorse for the victims of the crime,” so let’s hope he was remorseful enough to cooperate with investigators about those various “overseas activities” he participated in with Hunter as part of Rosemont Seneca Partners.

https://nypost.com/2022/02/28/only-hope-for-hunter-bidens-best-friend-now-is-a-presidential-pardon/

This is the end of a six-year legal battle for Archer. Judge Ronnie Abrams for the Southern District of New York sentenced him to one year and one day in federal prison, and he must pay “his share” of $43 million in restitution to the victims and more than $15 million in forfeiture of assets. Prosecutors had asked for 30 months, but the judge cited conditions in prison because of covid as the reason for her relatively lenient sentence.

Hunter and Devon met Russian oligarch Elena Baturina, ex-wife of a corrupt former Moscow mayor, in 2014, weeks after she wired $3.5 million to a bank account associated with Devon.

Devon visited with then-Vice President Biden in the White House a week before being named to the board of Burisma, a corrupt Ukrainian energy company. Hunter was named to the board soon after that. The two were paid $4 million for their “services,” with Biden using his share of the windfall as “walking-around money” to fund his incredibly lavish lifestyle, as described in LAPTOP FROM HELL. The business endeavors of Hunter Biden and Devon Archer were “intertwined,” to use Devine’s word.

Archer has 60 days before he has to surrender to authorities. One way he might avoid prison now is through a presidential pardon, and Hunter did text him at one point that he was “part of a great family –- not a sideshow, not deserted by them even in your darkest moments.” So we shall see. Again, if President Biden doesn’t pardon him, there’s still one other way he might avoid prison: by cooperating with prosecutors investigating Hunter. Tell me, which looks worse: the President pardoning a “family member” who ripped off a Native American tribe, or possible revelations about the President’s son and perhaps the President himself?

In another story that’s been just about buried thanks to Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, the U.S. Secret Service says it can’t find years of travel records for Hunter Biden. Extensive trips to China, Russia and India took place while he was under Secret Service protection, from January 29, 2009, to July 8, 2014, and entire years have gone missing.

Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley and Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson, Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee, sought these records –- in unredacted form –- last month but were told in a February 14 letter from Secret Service Director James Murray that no records turned up for the years 2010, 201l or 2013.

If that smells bad to you, you’re not the only one holding your nose. Chris Farrell, director of investigations and research for Judicial Watch, which has also been seeking the records and may file suit, told The Epoch Times that it’s “highly improbable” that the Secret Service just “lost” these records. “I would not be surprised if there was political pressure on the Service to withhold records because it would be politically damaging to President Biden,” he said.

According to the Washington Examiner, the Secret Service did hand over 259 pages of records from other years, but those had “extensive” and improper redactions. “The USSS hid names and other information contained in email conversations regarding Hunter Biden without any proper legal justification,” Sens. Grassley and Johnson wrote in their last request for records.

We’d say this hiding of information brings new meaning to the term “Secret” Service.

https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/secret-service-says-it-cant-find-hunter-biden-travel-records-for-2010-2011-or-2013

Sen. Johnson appeared Sunday with Maria Bartiromo on SUNDAY MORNING FUTURES and was asked about this, and he attributed it to “a simple word: corruption.” He says that after his committee subpoenaed FBI Director Christopher Wray, they were given “a fraction” of what they should have received. He said he and Sen. Grassley had also written to CIA Director Gina Haspel with a “long list” of items they wanted for their investigation. She wrote back that she’d be “responsive to legitimate oversight” but she didn’t turn over even one page, he said, and did not even return their phone calls.

“...We do have a deep state,” he told Maria. “It’s populated by leftists. And that’s something we need to address.”

A congressional report in 2020 found that Hunter engaged in millions of dollars in “questionable financial transactions” with associates and foreign individuals, including the above-mentioned Baturina and people with ties in the Chinese Communist Party. Biden’s presidential campaign dismissed it at the time as “hard-core right-wing conspiracy theory.” (Yes, another vast right-wing conspiracy.) For a refresher on these findings, you can’t do better than the New York Post.

https://nypost.com/2020/09/23/gop-senators-release-explosive-report-on-hunter-biden-burisma/

More recently, it was learned that George Kent, former deputy chief of mission at the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv, Ukraine –- remember him from President Trump’s first impeachment? –- emailed colleagues to express concern that Hunter’s influence peddling would “undercut” anti-corruption efforsts in the Ukraine. That would have been exculpatory evidence for Trump, as it offered good reason to look into his affairs in Ukraine, but it was withheld at the time. And, gosh, when Kent was testifying during Trump’s impeachment, he never mentioned anything about it.

Jonathan Turley wrote an excellent piece about this last month; highly recommended reading. “The level of success of the Biden team and the media had in burying this scandal is breathtaking,” he said. He likened it to the magic trick of making an elephant disappear.

https://jonathanturley.org/2022/02/04/report-diplomat-complained-that-hunter-biden-was-undercutting-anti-corruption-efforts-in-ukraine/

At a time when the world has suddenly transformed into a powder keg, it would be nice to know that our Commander-in-Chief, the person supposedly entrusted with our safety and best interest, had no conflicting interests of his own. But thanks to his family’s propensity for cozying up to oligarchs and world leaders and raking in literally billions in cash –- and their need to perhaps keep secrets about their activities –- we unfortunately don’t know any such thing.

Nashville Tragedy

Monday was a tragic day in many regards. I hope you will join me in praying for the victims of the horrific shooting at the Covenant School in Nashville and their families, and for the unnamed staffer of Sen. Rand Paul who was brutally stabbed Saturday in Washington, DC. (More about that story below.)  The horror at the Christian school in Nashville began when a 28-year-old woman who was a former student there shot her way into the school, carrying two rifles and a pistol, and killed three children and three adults before police confronted and killed her. We’re still waiting for police to release more details, but early reports are that the shooter was a “trans” person, which made the police press conference incredibly confusing. With the police spokesman’s attempts to avoid being un-PC, getting actual details about the shooter was like pulling teeth, but it appears that it was a woman who “identifies” as a man. She (sorry if that’s “misgendering” a mass murderer, but I don’t care) reportedly left behind a “manifesto” and social media posts calling for rage and violence against opponents of “gender transitioning” of children.

DC Crime: Rand Paul Senate Staffer Stabbed

Sen. Rand Paul announced that an unnamed staffer of his had been brutally stabbed multiple times in broad daylight in Washington, DC, while leaving a restaurant. The injuries were reportedly life-threatening, but the staffer is currently hospitalized and Paul thanked the first responders and hospital staff. He asked everyone to join him and his wife in praying for a “speedy and complete recovery. Police have a suspect in custody who told them that “voices in his head” told him to do this. He was also reportedly released from prison just one day before, after serving 12 years for violent crimes. A reminder: The DC City Council recently tried to make it even easier for criminals to be let out and returned to the streets, but Congress blocked that move. President Biden planned to veto it, but he ultimately angered so-called “progressives” (actually, “pro-criminals” would be a more accurate term) by signing it. I don’t know if the assault on a female Democrat Congress member in a DC elevator changed his mind; but that and this latest attack show how dangerous our nation’s Capital has become under far-left rule, and that Democrat politicians can actually start thinking rationally when they have to face the daily dangers they impose on others.

The Left Is Winning

A new Wall Street Journal/NORC poll sadly confirms what many of us deduced just from reading the news lately: the left has been shockingly successful in destroying faith in long-standing American values among young people. Compared to a poll that asked the same questions 25 years ago, only 38% of Americans say that patriotism is “very important” to them, compared to 70% in 1998. Those who say religion is very important to them dropped from 62% to 39%. The percentage who said raising children is very important fell from 59% to 30%. And the number who place high importance on community involvement plummeted from 62% to 27%. Disturbingly, the only value that rose in high importance was “money,” up from 31% to 43%. When broken down demographically, it’s clear that the steepest erosion in the belief in traditional American values is among Democrats and young people. It’s yet more proof that the biggest mistake made by Republicans in the past half century was allowing the left to infiltrate and take over our schools.

Moderate Democrats: Out of touch with most Americans

The polls have Democrats looking forward to the November elections with as much optimism as bugs look forward to a visit from the Orkin man.

The spiritual side of our lives really does matter

When I was growing up, my bedtime ritual always included a fairy tale that started with “Once upon a time...” and ended with the comforting words we all remember: “And they lived happily ever after.” As a child of the optimistic 1950s, I dreamed that life might be like that: whatever obstacles, dangers or perils might come my way, in the end, I would live happily ever after.

Why Art and Music Are Essential in Schools

Aside from letting leftist indoctrination take over our public school system, the biggest mistake we conservatives made in education over the years was in thinking that art and music classes were expendable luxuries and should be slashed to concentrate on “the three ‘R’s.” Not only are art and music classes important in themselves, but they are also beneficial to helping students excel in other subjects, including math and reading.

A blank book of pages

The first school in which we enroll, and the most important in shaping our future, is our home. A casual view of modern TV shows might lead us to believe that parents don’t matter. How to prevent young people from falling prey to socialism

I got a comment from a reader arguing that one reason young people fall prey to socialism (aside from being brainwashed by their teachers) is that they feel the capitalist system is failing them. They were told they had to get college degrees if they wanted good jobs, and encouraged to take out huge student loans. Now, they’re saddled with crippling debt, and those degrees aren’t opening the doors to jobs that pay enough to ever get out of the hole.
