RIKERS ISLAND.

Rikers Island is where they send high-profile violent offenders like serial killers and mob bosses. The “Son Of Sam” killer, David Berkowitz, was sent there, as well as Mark David Chapman, John Lennon’s killer. This seems to have come about because a New York grand jury charged Manafort in March with additional financial crimes. (Charged, not convicted, as Manafort has not yet had a trial.) Vance, a Democrat, said at that time that “no one is beyond the law in New York.”

If Manafort is found guilty of these crimes, the President cannot pardon him or commute his sentence, as these are state offenses.

I would really like to hear what U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis has to say about this. He presided over the original federal case that arose out of the special counsel investigation, and from what he said at the time, he knew that the charges against Manafort had nothing to do with Russian election interference and that the sentence was excessive.

Recall also that Manafort was held in solitary confinement for months, while awaiting trial and even during the trial. According to some news reports, he wasn’t even allowed a magazine.

I assume (but am not sure) that in the minimum-security prison in Pennsylvania where he’s currently serving time, he has been housed among the general population. In the famously rough environment of Riker’s Island, he’ll be –- you guess it –-- held in solitary.

“For his own protection.”

If Manafort did commit financial crimes, he should pay for that. But this price is far too high, and it’s almost certainly due to the fact that he DARED help Trump get elected. He is now a broken, ruined man, selectively prosecuted, an example of what can happen when you’re caught in the “crossfire” of the effort to bring down President Trump.

UPDATE: After the story broke about Paul Manafort being transferred to Rikers Island to await trial on state charges, Dan Bongino said in his Tuesday podcast that some on the left were ecstatic about this and had actually been celebrating. If this is true --- and I haven’t known Bongino to be wrong ---- then it simply proves the worst of what anyone says about leftist ideologues: that you are horrible people who don’t care WHAT happens to civil liberties in America if you can go after your political enemies and destroy them.

There should be outrage over this travesty of justice, from both sides of the aisle. In fact, I agree with Bongino that if there is not outrage and this doesn’t change, we have lost our country.

There was no legitimate reason to do this to a 70-year-old man in poor health who poses no threat but has committed some financial crimes, and it can happen only under a thoroughly corrupt system, which apparently describes New York. Rikers is filled with, as Bongino calls them, “the worst of the worst of the worst” violent offenders, the most dangerous of all: serial killers, child killers, mobsters, rapists, gang leaders. It’s a nightmarish place. Manafort is already a broken man, emotionally and physically, and he will likely die miserably and alone --- perhaps even be killed --- in there.

My thought is that this was an “in your face” move designed to underscore the fact that Trump can’t do anything to stop the attorneys and judges of New York, since these new charges are for state crimes and the state of New York is not answerable to the President on this. Note that Manafort was already being held in prison when these new charges came down and that he has not yet been tried for them, only charged.

Hey, why not charge him with murder and go ahead and kill him now? No need for a trial. The end for him would be the same.  Sure, New York abolished the death penalty in 2007, but they’ve abolished and reinstated it several times in their history. Trump-haters would probably love to bring it back just for this poor man, and they’d cheer his death. Oh, well, he’s pretty much on Death Row, anyway.

You know, if Democrats are so concerned about Russia, they should be aware that this shameful treatment of an accused man is like something that would have happened in the USSR. The only difference is that we would never have heard about it.

In related news, the New York state legislature just showed its tender side, by voting to become the first state in the nation to ban cat declawing.

WHERE ARE THE REPUBLICANS? WHERE ARE THE CONSERVATIVE LAWYERS? Are they afraid of the democrats? No man should have his entire life ruined because he stands up for our wonderful President Trump! His sentence is way over the mark. I can't believe that no one is fighting for justice for this man. It looks like the democrats have all the power and are doing anything they want. WHERE ARE THE REPUBLICANS??? Where is the outcry? Our wonderful Jay Sekulow has been helping people here and overseas to be freed from wrongful charges. I get petitions from him all the time to sign. I am dismayed by this. How can justice ever prevail when the left uses their power for such evil, and gets away with it? If someone can be treated this way, and people cheer, yes, they are evil, but why is this just ok, and nothing can be done?! It just seems that every time we turn around the left is getting away with more and more crimes, and that’s the end of the story. People die surrounding them, and that’s just all that there is, no closure about what really happened. Evil is eroding society at great speed, and conservatives just say, “well you must be evil if you think it’s ok”, but do nothing. I don’t know, it just seems like conservatives are too nice and just lay down defeated. Maybe that’s just my view of it all. Maybe it’s just because the left has such a media base. They have all the social media sites covered in their evil, MSM is riddled with evil. It’s discouraging. Then I think about Trump. He’s not the lay down kinda guy! People can criticize him, because honestly, he says too much, and certainly not very eloquently, but who could stand up to that sort of constant barrage of hatred and scorn? I cannot think of any other politician or NOT that could take the heat and still stand. He won! That defied the left! The MSM lied to us then, and they continue to lie to us today, never backing down from their narrative that Hillary won! I’m thankful he’s OUR President, but I fear for anyone who takes a stand with him. There needs to be a bold stand! I think conservatives are scared of the left. They are evil and scary people! Eloquent and evil are a frightening combination. We need to be a praying people . Not just say it, but do it! We should not be lying down while people like Manafort are railroaded for the left’s example. I dare say if ANY of the left were to be investigated, many skeletons would be flying out of their closets! I pray for that day.

    Mike,
Dan B. and you are so right. They are continuing to put the squeeze on Manafort to get to Trump. This is an
outrage and exactly the kind of government tactics found in Russia . FBI knew about Manafort's financial dealings

WHERE ARE THE REPUBLICANS??? Where is the outcry? Our wonderful Jay Sekulow has been helping people here and overseas to be freed from wrongful charges. I get petitions from him all the time to sign. Can't he get a petition started to help this man? God help us.

    Hi Governor Huckabee,
I find this abhorrent. Paul Manafort is being unduly punished while others walk scott free. I am tired of reading and hearing about bad things happening to Pro Trump conservatives and Republicans and Democrats breaking the law and not even getting their hand slapped. We need action! Now! We should not let this happen to Paul Manafort. Who will be next???? President Trump? You? Me?

I'm outraged. Poor guy. Is there nothing that can be done for him? They will kill him or he'll die of a broken heart and for what? Financial stuff?

Surely another judge can overturn this terrible situation. Please help him!

I thought it was a rule to never house non-violent with violent prisoners. This is an outrage.

This is just so much political BS. I suppose that the demon RATS just cannot help themselves. With help from the current investigations into the BS that has prevailed since before the Presidential election and after, hopefully this charade will end and the perps will all go to jail.
IMHO, some might just qualify for a firing squad.

My heart breaks for Manafort. I'm guessing the people involved in doing this to him have done and are doing far worse things. Who can stop the injustice and insanity? Is there no recourse in this great republic built on just laws that no one is supposed to be above, especially our government?

Sounds like the Democrats are pushing for a one political party system... sounds like a dictatorship to me. Hmm... one party, single payer medical insurance. People better wake up!

    Mike,
Dan B. and you are so right. They are continuing to put the squeeze on Manafort to get to Trump. This is an
outrage and exactly the kind of government tactics found in Russia . FBI knew about Manafort's financial dealings
long before Manafort was involved with Trump's campaign. They never touched him then. Now he's considered a dangerous criminal ? I'm sick about this.
