Senate reaches deal

March 25, 2020 |

It took until after midnight, but the Senate finally agreed early this morning on an unprecedented $2 trillion (!) economic rescue plan that’s been dubbed “unemployment insurance on steroids.”

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/white-house-senate-strike-deal-on-historic-2t-coronavirus-relief-bill-but-house-support-remains-uncertain

The bill includes direct payments to most Americans and support for unemployment funds so that no workers will lose their salaries during the shutdown, $367 billion to help keep small businesses afloat while their workers are stuck at home, and a $500 billion guaranteed, subsidized loan program for larger businesses and hospitals. Chuck Schumer said Democrats were ready to give unanimous consent so that if no Republicans objected, it could be sped through without a formal roll call vote. The Senate will meet today for debate and (many hope) will quickly send it to the House for a hoped-for unanimous passage as-is.

Don’t count your chickens yet, though, because there could still be objections in the House. Some Democrats made it obvious that they saw the bill as a big piñata that could be stuffed with leftist “transforming America” wish list items, from national same-day voter registration and voting by mail (i.e., the “Voter Fraud Made Easy” program) to various diversity hiring and CO2 emission mandates on businesses, to money for Planned Parenthood abortion clinics. As Bryan Preston at PJ Media put it in this terrific analysis, the Pelosi Democrats treated the coronavirus bill “like it’s a genie that jumped out of a Christmas tree.”

https://pjmedia.com/trending/pelosi-dems-treat-coronavirus-bill-like-its-a-genie-that-jumped-out-of-a-christmas-tree/

Luckily, when faced with a furious backlash from the public (they’re now about as popular as the skunk that ate the picnic lunch) and from even the most liberal Republicans in the Senate, Pelosi and the Dems backed down. The sledgehammer fell when President Trump declared that he would not sign a bill that was filled with “Green New Deal stuff.” I think it’s a sign of admirable growth in his role as a wartime President that he showed enough dignity and restraint not to use the word I’m sure he was thinking of instead of “stuff.”

Now, the Speaker just has to keep her notoriously headstrong members in line and the House could rush it through on unanimous consent, too. However, that might be quashed by the threatened opposition of one non-Democratic member, notoriously headstrong Michigan Rep. Justin Amash, whose Trump Derangement Syndrome led him to quit the GOP and become an Independent. I have a feeling this might be his last shot at playing fly-in-the-Jello-mold before the November election returns him to the private sector and the inevitable commentator deal with MSNBC or CNN.

Personally, I hate seeing this level of federal intervention and added debt, too, but we are facing an unprecedented emergency. The bill is far from ideal, but as former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld put it, you go to war with the army you have, not the one you wish you had. And if this is the equivalent of war, this the best weapon Trump is able to get out of this bitterly divided Congress. Just be grateful that Trump had the backbone to refuse to be blackmailed and to keep so much of that leftist…”stuff”…out of it.

Although tragic that so many Americans live from hand to mouth and have absolutely no savings for emergencies (but they just bought a 75” TV on credit), I DO NOT approve of future taxpayers money (financed by more government debt) being given to individuals and businesses. All monies thus distributed should be considered a loan and paid back, out of future income tax refunds if need be for individuals. If not paid back, this HUGE bailout is only going to add to inflation and the degradation of our already worthless fiat currency. When the financial ballon bursts it’s only going to be that much worse. Although it appears the President is doing a good thing, it teaches the public there’s no reason to be thrifty and save, as Uncle Sam will always bail us out no matter our behavior.

Any money for the Planned Parent abortion & baby killing organisation must be eliminated from this matter. #1 it has nothing to do with the Covid 19 problem. This is a completely separate problem that has no relationship to the Covid-19 matter.Pelosi & her crooked group should not be allowed to mix this evil plot to be a part of the health problem we have with Covid-19.

If I understood correctly that the Democrats in this relief bill is blocking President Trump from receiving relief for his hotels & resorts for what they lost. How unfair!
My passions are inflamed enough because of this issue to reaffirm my vote against Democrats and influence as many as possible to vote the same.

Now if the rest of the Republican Senate would support our President and stand up to the opposition and not pass a bill that has nothing to do with the current environment that would seem like a miracle!! President Trump....do not sign anything with the Green New deal or voter registration changes to accommodate new ways to vote. Enough is enough!!

I'm still getting a 'foul' smell from this $2T monster. Reports have it that too many dems like Alexandromeda Ocrazio-Cortex are 'giddily' SILENT over the "stuff" that possibly remains in this thing. They had to "get something," what was it? Some hidden, back door, under the table funding of Planned Parenthood, or some 'dreamed of' DemonRAT illegal voter registration deal? Remember Gov, "Never Let A Crisis Go To Waste!" Somebody please read the fine print!!

    Dear Governor,
Will you please address this question. Given that Gov. Cuomo is getting huge face time on the news channels, he could come in as the “ savior” since Biden continues to demonstrate that he is failing, what do you think? Unfortunately, I think he would make a very strong showing against POTUS and could very well win. That would be a disaster. Look at the NY that people are leaving in droves.

I hope it passes because I am watching as my only child who went to work in the dental field straight out of high school in 1976...meaning she's been there just 3 mos shy of 44 years and now no work . They were shut down. Nearing retirement years, she needs to finish preparations. She was always a hard worker, often picking up odd jobs on the side to help out. They need this help badly. Pelosi would have been bald headed if she had gotten near me this week...I was just plain angry with her and her ilk.

I fully support President Trump and his team in their incredible balancing of our physical health and our economic health. I'm blessed to be retired and have been home with my dog since March 12, no symptoms. That said, what all of this should be saying in loud terms to freedom-loving Americans is how relatively easy it is for the government to "suspend" or out-and-out take away our freedoms. Yes, this time it's for our own well-being, and next time might be for our good too, and it will be easier because it's been done already and we were given our freedoms back again. But what about the 3rd time, 4th time, etc.? We must be vigilant and not let this be a regular occurrence, because one of these times, and with a different government, we may just not get our freedoms back!

  • Richard Lingenfelter

I would sooner starve than see the Democrats put all the leftests and socialists programs into the bill. President Trump is trying to save America and all Americans and is not using this to get reelected. He is going to win the election by a land slide and they are too self centered and pompous to see it. There will be millions of dollars going back to them if their items are approved in the bill.

I wish there were a law or whatever to prevent all this pork. Anything added should directly be related to what the bill is for. Also get rid of all lobbyist so people don't run to get rich. Also congress members should not be able to work in the media after leaving congress.

The Democrats are a big joke. Our country is fighting a war with an unseen enemy and all they want to do is feed their stupid socialistic agenda while American people and businesses are shut down and hurting. Maybe it’s time for me and the wife to sell all the property we own and move to another country where the government leaders use common sense if there is such a place.

Question: I have read that most beneficiaries of Social security will NOT get a check; is that true? Even though our checks are still coming, in some instances prices of items have doubled. So, same money, same bills, more other expenses. IN our case, medical expenses and insurance premiums take half of our income. I hope I have read the information incorrectly.

Thank you, Mr. President. Hopefully, after this crisis is over, and your eminent reelection, maybe a few well placed 'executive orders" could magically appear to harness the "Green Deal stuff" along with rescinding and reworded demoncRAT pinata "gifts".

to be honest, your party is more at fault for this nonsense than the dems...you had control of the house and should have had enough foresight to predict what might happen, like now, should the dems take over -- i think americans are beyond disgusted with both parties...you all are repulsive.

Thank you for the information. How I wish that my liberal friends would see how the mainstream media have brainwashed them regarding the Democratic Party and that they would vote those selfish so called "public servants" out of office. I have always said that if Donald Trump found the cure TODAY for all cancer, the news headlines the following day would read "Donald Trump forces thousands of dedicated doctors and hospitals out of business". I only wish that I was joking.

Sigh! And yet the little guy is still going to get hosed. I work for myself with a small business. I don’t make enough to pay taxes, and I currently have no work and very little money. I keep hearing that these checks are going out to taxpayers, but I thought they were supposed to be for all Americans. I’m the one who needs it most!

What benefits are available for those on SSN that exceed the allowable income amount?
If someone is on SSN and below poverty level and is not required to file taxes, how do they know who and where they are?

Question: I have read that most beneficiaries of Social security will NOT get a check; is that true? Even though our checks are still coming, in some instances prices of items have doubled. So, same money, same bills, more other expenses. IN our case, medical expenses and insurance premiums take half of our income. I hope I have read the information incorrectly.
