Pulled

There’s a saying online about companies that knuckle under to PC pressure: “Get ‘woke,’ go broke.”  Maybe we need to add one for TV shows: “Get ‘woke,’ get canceled.”

CBS’s recent resurrection of the 1990s liberal-lecture-of-the-week sitcom “Murphy Brown” will not be renewed after it pulled historically low ratings, including a 0.9 share of the key 18-49 demographic.  That’s not surprising, considering that nobody in the lower end of that demo probably ever heard of it before.  Like fellow Emmy Awards darling “The Daily Show,” it had the shelf life of a ripe banana.  Nobody wants to watch smug Dan Quayle jokes in syndication.

I have a feeling you won’t see the latest version in syndication, either, considering it included such knee-slappers as Murphy lecturing my daughter Sarah on how to do her job, or last week’s episode that depicted ICE agents as evil and stupid, illegal immigrants as virtuous and put-upon, and lectured us on how unfair and mean it was that America has immigration laws that we expect people to respect.  Just what Americans want to watch after a hard day at work.  But now, the show has been canceled, so its creators and stars can go back to their secure mansions and apartment buildings, living safely behind walls and armed guards until they find another venue from which to harangue Americans about how horrible we are for not embracing open borders.

Meanwhile, I’d like to point out that some of the most popular shows on both cable and streaming services are such ‘80s and ‘90s hits as “The Golden Girls,” “Friends” and “Frasier,” which were built on interesting characters and funny jokes, not hectoring the audiences with leftist political opinions on topics of the moment.  You’d think Hollywood would learn from that.  But it won’t.

You couldn’t cut all the layers of irony with a chainsaw.

Well, “Murphy Brown” may be gone, but at least America will always have Barack Obama to lecture us smugly on our many faults.  Ironically, his latest comments were criticisms of America's elitists for their "great smugness" about their wealth and status.  You couldn’t cut all the layers of irony with a chainsaw.

https://www.breitbart.com/video/2018/11/28/obama-america-has-a-great-smugness-about-wealth-status/

Incidentally, Obama repeated a criticism that’s become common recently among people who misunderstand or deliberately misrepresent America’s history.  It's the idea that the Founders were such racists, they considered black people to be only “three-fifths” of a person.  In fact, the "three-fifths clause" was extremely controversial in its day, and it did not brand all black Americans as three-fifths of a person.

It allowed slave states to count only three-fifths of their slaves toward their populations in allocating power in the House of Representatives, even though slaves couldn’t vote and were considered property.  Many delegates to the Constitutional Convention strongly opposed the idea because it increased the political influence of slave holders, and some refused to support the Constitution because of it.  But others reluctantly accepted it as a devil’s deal compromise only because the alternatives were either to allow slave states to count all their slaves, giving them even more power, or to have the South reject the Constitution, and the USA would have died in the cradle.

In short, modern liberals should stop being so smug about their superiority to the Founding Fathers.  Most recognized the evils of slavery in an era when that was hardly the universally-accepted view, and did all they could to fight it at a time when that stance could be politically costly and even physically dangerous. In that regard and many others, they were genuine revolutionaries.  How many of today's virtue-signalling "social justice warriors" who are afraid even to say the wrong thing on Twitter would have had the courage to do the same?

Liberal fury

Remember when President Trump asked why America was accepting so many uneducated, unskilled immigrants from "BLEEP-hole" countries?  Liberals flipped their biscuits over that.  What a disgusting, insulting, racist, imperialist thing to say!  Why, all cultures are equally admirable, if not actually superior to Western Culture (which beggared the question, "Then why are so many of their residents fleeing here?")  And they adamantly insisted that there is no such thing as a "BLEEP-hole" country.

Well, this blogger in Paris makes a brilliant observation.  Now, all the outraged talk on the left is about what an unfeeling monster Trump is because he won’t let all these “asylum seekers” into America.  They talk as if sending them back to their native nations in Central America would be as cruel as feeding them into wood-chippers.  How can Trump possibly force them to return to those lands of oppression, crime, violence, injustice, poverty, disease…

Hey, wait a minute!  What does that sound like they’re describing?  As this blogger puts it, when the left’s latest darling “Beto” O’Rourke pleads, "It should tell us something about her home country that a mother is willing to travel 2,000 miles with her 4-month old son to come here," isn’t he really saying, “I, Beto O'Rourke; we, members of the Democrat Party; we, leftists all over the world, I/we agree with Donald Trump 100% that countries in Latin America are BLEEP-holes.”  (Warning: he doesn't use the "BLEEP.")

https://no-pasaran.blogspot.com/2018/11/guess-what-dont-democrats-like-beto-in.html

I think this might be another example of a phenomenon I described recently in which liberals erupt in the loudest fury and outrage at Trump not when he says something incorrect, but when he says something they know to be true but that establishment “culture leaders” decided long ago that nobody was supposed to talk about.

The Mississippi Senate Race

As expected, Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith won Tuesday's Mississippi run-off against Democrat Mike Espy.  The news media’s Democratic pep squad ginned up just enough hope that Espy had a chance to convince Republicans to turn out, and Hyde-Smith won by a comfy margin of nearly 9 points.  This means that Republicans will have an expanded Senate majority of 53-47.  That will help prevent certain flaky Republicans from holding conservative legislation or nominees hostage to their personal demands.

Hyde-Smith is also the first woman ever elected Senator from Mississippi, so I’m certain that feminists will be celebrating and congratulating her.  I’m also certain that Boston baked beans come from Biloxi.

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/polls-close-in-mississippi-senate-special-election-runoff-between-hyde-smith-and-espy

A few takeaways from this race:

The “blue wave” has not yet succeeded in turning all red areas at least purple, certainly not areas as red as Mississippi.  I also suspect that it’s a fleeting thing, a form of temporary insanity built almost entirely on emotional, unhinged Trump hatred and biased media coverage, and I hope that we will someday look back on the 2018 midterms as its high water mark.

Republicans don’t have to watch their red states be undone by failed liberal policies if they just show up and vote.  Despite the media’s wishful thinking and attacks on Hyde-Smith, the only real longshot chance Espy had of winning was if all the conservatives who backed Chris McDaniel in the primary and thought Hyde-Smith wasn’t a strong enough supporter of Trump decided to be sore losers and punish themselves and their own state by staying home. Unfortunately for the Democrats, conservatives weren’t self-destructive idiots.

McDaniel’s endorsement of Hyde-Smith was hardly enthusiastic, but he did endorse her, declaring that Espy “cannot be allowed to win this seat” and citing Trump’s call for GOP unity.  Trump also came to Mississippi to campaign for Hyde-Smith.  The upshot is that Republicans can win if they don’t fall for attempts to divide them into warring camps -- the only thing today's Democrats are really good at -- and refuse to vote if the Republican candidate isn’t their perfect choice.  They should always remember that just about any Republican is going to be closer to what they believe than the Democrat who will win if they don’t show up to vote.

This race might also mark a turning point at which the politics of personal destruction started to lose their effectiveness.  It wasn’t lost on Mississippi voters that Alabama now has Democratic Senator Doug Jones because of last minute sex-related allegations against Republican Roy Moore; and Jones has since voted to support Trump’s agenda and nominees only 50% of the time in a state Trump won by nearly 2-1.  Then there was the all-out assault on SCOTUS nominee Brett Kavanaugh (whom Jones voted against) that made the left's no-holds-barred, no-evidence-required slander tactics as obvious as they were repulsive.  So when Democrats and the media (but I repeat myself) tried to use clumsy quotes or photos of Hyde-Smith to paint her as an evil racist, I think may have struck many voters as an example of playing the same tired song one too many times.  Let’s hope that the left’s “everyone who doesn’t agree 100% with me is a racist, sexist Nazi” trope has finally outlived its usefulness.

Finally – and this can’t be said strongly enough or too many times – this was the absolute, I-kid-you-not, final election of 2018!  Those of us who are still capable of putting politics aside can finally do so and enjoy Christmas, which feels as if it came early with the political races finally over and the Florida ballot counting actually ending before Valentine's Day.

For those who look at the world through such a tiny wormhole that they feel lost without something political to rant about, there’s always saying nasty things about Melania Trump’s White House Christmas decorations on Twitter.

I am a Mississippi Republican woman from Pascagoula. You are correct in that most of us weren’t fooled by the Espy ads. He came across as a slick shyster and she is the real deal. Wish we didn’t have to go through this again 2 years from now.

BTW, I had the honor of meeting and talking to you before you spoke at the Founder’s Day Luncheon for the Jackson County Republican Women several years ago in Pascagoula. We talked about young people and how impressive many of them are. Whenever I hear more about the millennials than I can bear, I think back to our conversation.

I am also a BIG fan of your Sarah. She rocks!! Sure wish we could have her speak at our Founder’s Day in 2019. We wouldn’t be able to print tickets fast enough!!

    Keep up your good work!

Something also that infuriates liberals is to remind everyone of things that President Trump says and upsets them to no end--is the exact same things in the exact same stance that clinton and obama, and even GWB (the President they most hated until President Trump) had. Immortalized on utube, archived tapes, etc. DO NOT REMIND THEM! How dare anyone point this out!! It was a different time. Or, remind them of the conditions of the camps where children were held during obama's administration. We know this treatment outrages so many people--until they are informed the pictures were from 2014 instead of 2017 or 2018. Or remind them of when tear gas was used on the border extensively when obama was President (of course, people are probably not aware of that, seeing that msm most likely didn't cover it.)

One can hope and pray that Republicans and other conservatives NEVER get so lax, so overly confident that we don't go out in full force to vote in EVERY election. The elections of 2018 should have been over long ago. There are deadlines for getting ballots counted, and should be adhered to. It was infuriating to see people like that offical in FL who kept finding ballots (legal or not, invalid or not, already counted or not) each time a deadline is reached and the democrats didn't get the wins they wanted. I'm not sure which jurisdiction elections fall under, but the topmost person in that Department should have drawn the line, and to the heck with threats of lawsuits, whining about suppressing votes etc etc etc.

I didn't read about the whining about how Melania Trump decorated the White House for Christmas, because I'm quite sure it looks great! I am, though, waiting for the outcry about "Charlie Brown's Christmas" which I saw is coming to a channel near you. Or, maybe, since the hulabaloo about his Halloween pretty much went no where, they will concentrate on, say, "It's A Wonderful Life" because of the spiritual context. Or, "Christmas Story" because of the dangerous toy ("You'll shoot your eye out!!!")

Sorry for butting in again today, but I just took that poll on the Border Wall and I am wondering why we cannot use the money from El Chappo? Who and where is this money from his Cartel going?? There is enough money there to pay for a good portion of it or all of it. The Dimms will just take it if they can get a hold of it! REALLY!

I would like to get you to speak with a Republican Constitutional Conservative who was elected to County Commissioner in BLUE Maryland. I think he can help President Trump with messaging. Please speak with him. I realize you may not want to give out your phone number so I will provide his cell number - Commissioner Richard Rothschild Carroll County Md. if you advise me how to do that privately. I am Commissioner Rothschild's campaign Treasurer.

I think Melania Trump's White House decorations are sensational! I also think she should end up on the cover of a few magazines as did her predecessors constantly. She is beautiful and talented and accomplished (as we used to say in the hinterlands of Illinois). She does not get enough credit. She and Sarah Sanders should get some good press together. Great ladies!

It still sickens me that many want to give the illegals a free pass (housing, healthcare, food, etc...) when then NEVER help the woman with children on the street, who, incidentally, is a CITIZEN. I love your comments on FOX & FRIENDS...why are they not sponsoring these people they want to release on our society, taking them in, feeding and clothing them and giving them a job with their own companies? Because they are HYPOCRITES.

Byron York had a commentary in the Mercury, Pottstown, PA Thursday November 29, 2018 about the wall. This is just a portion
Unlikely. still, there is one possible course for Republicans. It is pubic law 109-367, better known as the secure Fence act. The act was passed by big, bipartisan majorities in 2006, receiving 283 votes in the house and 80 in the senate. Many dems voted for it? 'etc'
If the law had been followed, many vulnerable parts of the border would now be secured. However the next year 2007, after dems won control of the house and senate, congress amended the secure fence act. etc
If this is so can Trump do anything to re-enact the old law. There is a law on the books that could strengthen border security. Why wouldn't the president try it? True or False?
Mike - thanks for reading my comment.

UNTIL THE EARLY 60'S. JIMMY CARTER GOT ME STARTED VOTING MORE AND MORE REPUBLICAN. THE DEMS THRIVE ON LIES AND THE MEDIA PRINTS A LOT OF IT KNOWING BETTER. Another great newsletter Governor! I exclusively watch all the old television programs and movies, even those television programs going back to the sixties. I love those because they are substantive and funny unlike anything currently produced.
Regarding the liberals, they are unfortunately always offended and offensive and they manage to be both at the same time. It is getting old though. Their constant rants about being discriminated against is just Bleep!

I enjoy reading your comments, Governor. As regards your writing on the left's contempt for our Founding Fathers, someone wrote recently that he looks at the past as a foreign country, noting that "they do things differently there." I found this very insightful and wish everyone would look at it that way and stop trying to change or erase it.

Thank you, Murphy Brown gone. When are they going to learn we the people want to be entertained not hear their politics. We have our own and do not believe what you may believe. Stop this. You are losing viewers. I left CNN and MSNBC during the last Presidential they were so biased. Roseanne show is now not making it because Roseanne was the main draw. I stopped watching yet I loved the rest of the group. Roseanne did not know about this black woman being black who worked for Pres Obama. Media needs to move on and let go of the attacks on this President and the racism they are trying to use . I guess Pres Obama was not part white per his mother not mentioned WHY? Kind of sad. Then Mississippi and the Senator and her off the wall comment of hanging she was not thinking of blacks in any way as the attack made against her. Taking anything said out of context and twisting to make it worse. WHY? Control of the black people. Sorry time to wake up and ask WHY are you being controlled. Stop. Time to come together and stop this allowing a group to divide and use racism day in and out now. We just lost the past couple of days 3 soldiers in Afganistan fighting for us and what we do here and we are not a very good example for what they are doing dying for us and what their families have to face. No more MEDIA and politicians. Do the job and stop the attacks we are tired out here of hearing all of this over and over. Time for Mueller to get out what he has or does not have on Russia made me do it . Russia is not destroying us we are doing the job among ourselves. WHY who is actually doing this?

    Governor Huckabee:
Regarding Murphy Brown.............I never watched her then nor did I now. Low ratings prove no one else watched either. Loved Frasier though.
Been thinking about the wall the President wants to build, yes we need a wall, yes we need to sent the illegals back, but wait their is more, I know how to pay for the wall..............tell Mueller to quit...........take all the millions he is spending of our money and build the wall. Then he can go kick sand with Obama, etc. and the wall will be built! Great idea, yes? Sometime when you want to see one of the best political movies ever, watch "DAVE" a great little film with some great ideas on how to balance our budget! Kevin Klein was great, even thought I think Sigourney Weaver is a lib, the movie is good, check it out.

    Gov. Huckabee -

    I'm a Mississippian and a voter.

I voted for Chris McDaniel on Nov 6th and for Sen. Hyde-Smith yesterday.

I was a Chris McDaniel supporter in June 2014 when he ran against old, Old Thad Cochran in the GOP primary. The GOP machine rigged that primary runoff.

I supported McDaniel in early Nov 2018 vs. Mike Espy and (Gov.-appointed/recently-minted Republican) Senator Hyde-Smith.

Yesterday's runoff election was to ensure that a dyed-in-the-very-blue-wool candidate (Espy) didn't win. That's how and why I voted for CHS, rather than stay home.

After all, what has Hyde-Smith done in 7 months in the U.S. Senate except to confirm Brett Kavanaugh and some federal judicial nominees? She didn't do anything to win her "re-election", Pres. Trump did.

She is still an unfortunate, unproven moderate appointee by GOP-puppet masters Mitch McConnell, Haley Barbour and Gov. Phil Bryant, in my opinion.

Hyde-Smith's real test will be over the next two years, as that is the remainder of Sen. Cochran's term that she won.

53 GOP Senators vs. 52 GOP Senators for Mitch McConnell … really, with the "country club's" Senate filibuster rules and a 116th Congress Democratic House, what does it matter for future legislation?

If Hyde-Smith even blinks or is silent re: illegal immigration, funding the border wall, national defense or the Second Amendment, she will be gone in 2020 -- Pres. Trump running or not, or her voting for more Trump-nominated federal judges or not. I won't speak for all Mississippi conservatives, but that's the way I will NOT VOTE.

She MUST challenge Leader Mitch McConnell, who is NOT a Trump Agenda supporter, especially over the next three weeks. Mitch McConnell didn't campaign for her here in Mississippi 3X over two months or get her elected yesterday; Pres. Trump did.

She must remember that and act accordingly.

    Regards,

    John W. Oravis
