There were nearly 100,000 apprehensions of illegal border crossers in April alone, and we’re on track to hit 863,000 in the current fiscal year. And those are just the ones who got caught, not the ones who get in. Since 2010, the average number has been between 300,000 and 500,000 a year. Yet most Americans have no idea just how bad the illegal immigration problem is.
A new Harvard/Harris Poll found that when Americans were asked how many illegal aliens are arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border, only about 13% guessed correctly. That’s about two out of 15 people. Meanwhile, over three-quarters of Americans estimated illegal immigration levels as vastly lower than they really are.
Even 35% of Republicans, conservatives and Trump voters estimated that only between 10,000 and 100,000 illegal aliens get in per year. Interestingly, when told that the real number was as high as 100,000 a month, the number of respondents who agreed with Trump that it’s an emergency and we need to build a border wall jumped to a majority of 52 percent.
Why are people so misinformed about such an important issue? Maybe because they get their news from such “trusted sources” as the New York Times, whose editors spent the past year smugly assuring readers that Trump is a racist liar and there is no “crisis” at the border…until a few weeks ago, when they finally admitted that Trump is right, there is. Wonder how long it will take them to admit that Trump was right when he accused them of publishing fake news?
And here’s further proof that people who rely on leftist news outlets for information about the border situation are sadly misinformed.
