“Democratic” Socialist Rep-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has complained how unfair it is for the media to depict her as dumb for her public statements (welcome to the world Republicans from Reagan to Dan Quayle to George W. Bush inhabited, and their statements had to be twisted out of context to be made to sound dumb). But at least she has a defender in Vox’s Matt Yglesias, who performed the same service that soldiers do when they draw fire away from their comrades.
Yglesias is so enamored of the popular dispenser of baffling comments on civics and economics that he wrote an article demanding she be allowed to run for President even though she’s only 29. In fact, he thinks we should scrap that entire pesky section of the Constitution that defines who’s qualified and let anyone of any age from anywhere on Earth run for US President. Besides, as he pointed out, she has that cool nickname: “AOC.” Plus, if we elect someone older as President, “The really awful thing about being old is that you just keep getting older over time.” Deep, dude.
(I should point out that Yglesias is 37, so he does provide a sterling example of the fact that merely being over 35 doesn't imbue you with superior judgement or intelligence.)
The piece accomplished the goal of distracting people from attacking Rep.-elect Ocasio-Cortez and turning their attention instead to mocking the idiocy of this article, which makes SpongeBob Squarepants sound like Albert Einstein. Even AOC replied, “How about... no. Sometimes political media is too fixated on personalities instead of policies. The whole country JUST went through an exhausting midterm election. We need a break.”
Let it be noted that I praised her: that’s the wisest thing I’ve ever heard her say.
