It’s hard to believe with so many contenders, but there are times when Donald Trump is his own worst enemy. He had a perfect opportunity to respond to the revelation that Twitter was colluding with Democrats to rig the 2020 election, taking orders from them to silence inconvenient speech like a waitress at a short order restaurant. Unfortunately, Trump released this statement:

"So, with the revelation of MASSIVE & WIDESPREAD FRAUD & DECEPTION in working closely with Big Tech Companies, the DNC, & the Democrat Party, do you throw the Presidential Election Results of 2020 OUT and declare the RIGHTFUL WINNER, or do you have a NEW ELECTION? A Massive Fraud of this type and magnitude allows for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution. Our great 'Founders' did not want, and would not condone, False & Fraudulent Elections!"

I agree with that last line, but how could he not know that suggesting we terminate the rules in the Constitution was like handing his enemies a weapon to bash him with on a silver platter, which they also bashed him with. It played right into the “authoritarian insurrectionist” narrative they’ve been trying to gin up for years. Trump actually gave President Biden – the beneficiary of all that unconstitutional censorship of free speech – the high ground to defend the Constitution against him, and Biden’s been using the Constitution as Charmin since his first minute in office. I think in sports, they call this an “unforced error.”

This is the type of unpredictable and unnecessary media storm that has many Republicans, even Trump supporters, looking to Ron DeSantis as an alternative who might carry on Trump’s policies without the drama and baggage. That’s showing up in a new poll by WPA Intelligence, a firm used by top GOP politicians and organizations. Trump’s favorability rating among Republicans is now 70%, which sounds high but is down quite a bit from its peak.

https://redstate.com/mike_miller/2022/12/03/top-polling-firm-survey-finds-good-news-for-desantis-not-so-much-for-trump-even-among-trump-voters-n668491

Meanwhile, DeSantis’ net favorability rating is higher than Trump’s among several demographics, including Republicans (+66 to +44), Fox News viewers (+58 to +27) and even 2020 Trump voters (+69 to +54.) DeSantis also does better among all-important Independent voters, 66% of whom view Trump unfavorably. DeSantis has a net -3 favorability rating among Independents, which sounds bad until you hear that Biden is at -27 and Trump -39.

That article rightly warns that polls shouldn’t be taken too seriously, especially at this stage. But this should serve as a warning sign to Trump’s circle that Republican voters consider 2024 to be too important to risk on someone who shoots from the hip and hits his own foot. If Trump wants to know how badly some ill-chosen words can hurt you, I have two words for him to consider: “Kanye West.” Those are also two words that should never again appear on his dinner guest list.

Hi Mike. I have to agree with you that DJT is his own worst enemy. I'm a Trump supporter. I voted for him twice. I've cheered him on through all the trials and turmoil. Like many other Americans, I'm tired. I'm tired of the games, the divisiveness, the broken America. The Dems are NEVER going to stop. Imho it's time for a new face for the leader of the republican party. Who will that be? Who could that be? I don't know. I live in Florida and I love our governor, I'm just not sure I'm ready to give him up until the end of his term. I've grown weary off Trump’s arrogance and childish behavior. Even his daughter has backed away. Does Melania REALLY want to do this.... again? Somehow, I don't think so. Anyway, just my thoughts for whatever they are worth.

Mike Huckabee: thank you for this excellent analysis.
I have a tremendous respect for our former President Trump -- who was an excellent and diligent president with a sincere respect for his country and the American people). He was, of course, sometimes his own worst enemy --- and that is true for many, many folks -- including ME. Haha!

I did not read it that way. I understood it to mean that 2020 election tossed the Constitution out the window. But, I guess that is just me.

Hi Mike I have to disagree with your assertion that Trump is too “radioactive” to support candidates in a positive way. The Democrats have poisoned the voting system and only need Atlanta or another big city to win an election. We all know giving free video games and iPads are more important to these voters than actually voting for the right candidate. Trump isn’t the movement we are the movement that guy sacrificed his livelihood to help save this country. People could show some more respect. We didn’t win key seats because there are voters who don’t care on both sides and especially big cities where free things from Democrats are more important, on top of questionable voting systems and practices. Trumps not the problem its the ignorant people.

The Republican party (and Conservatives) already fractured will now be split in their support of the presidential nominee. The media had already done a pretty good job of demonizing Trump with his supporters before all this. The lack of a "red wave" was blamed on Trump (not the Republicans who stayed home and didn't vote because they had been convinced the victory was a lock). I doubt very seriously that DeSantis has the machine to wrest the nomination from Trump. That said I believe Trump will win the nomination and Biden (who WILL run) will win again. An additional 4 years of Biden and the "experiment" will be done. The Republican disunity will again take the country down in flames.

Mike, I have always been a #1 Fan of Donald Trump. I have written ltters to the editor of our local paper in his defense, and have been published a dozen times. I thought his policies were great, and he fulfilled his campaign promises against all odds. He got a lousy deal in 2020. However, I'm afraid the "enemy" has won, and gotten him to say things that have hurt him irreparably! I'm also afraid that if he was elected again, that too much time and energy would be wasted on getting even with his foes. I'm not sure he could unite the Country ever again. I hate that this is seemingly the case. Meanwhile, DeSantis is like a breath of fresh air, and might just be the answer that the GOP needs to resurrect it to the Party we all could love and respect.
    P.S. Sooo happy for Sarah!

It seems as if he is handling the push back less well than he did while President. He should not shoot off messages whole angry. I honestly don't know if VP Pence did him wrong or not but while together they had the prayer support to help bolster the work. Perhaps without it he is losing his hold on his ability to speak with caution.

IF is wasn't for Trump himself, Trump would be the greatest President ever. He just can not get out of the way of himself. Foot and mouth disease. Open mouth and put foot in it. He has got to clean up the image and be more grown up for people to see. We know it is there because people close to him have spoken of many great things and kind heart he can have but he just needs a filter.

Read carefully what President Trump posted over the weekend:
"A Massive Fraud of this type and magnitude allows for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution," he wrote. "Our great 'Founders' did not want, and would not condone, False & Fraudulent Elections!"
The very idea that sanctimonious members of all 3 branches of the federal government would dare say anything about this statement from Trump when they have over and over again taken actions that are completely unconstitutional is unbelievable. What Trump realizes is that the democratic republic our founders gave us no longer exists and will need to be replaced by a new government. (See the amend or abolish statement in our Declaration of Independence). I have been saying for a long time that we will never correct our problems by simply voting because we have waited too long. Most of our citizens are not willing to pay the cost that will be required to regain our freedoms. Going forward, two words will become important - discernment and courage.
