THE GOV. ANSWERS READER: WHAT'S GOING ON WITH JUDGE SULLIVAN?
From reader Lindsay K:
Following this case some, I kept feeling like Judge Sullivan was exercising some caution after Sidney Powell took over the case. He was a central figure in her book, LICENSE TO LIE, I believe. And so I felt he was exercising caution to not be accused of bias.
But after [he made] a poor judgment call in December regarding this case because he was misled by the prosecution, I can't begin to understand why he would open himself up to this same group of thugs and bullies. So now, my working theory is, since Obama is implicated, there is some awful pressure on him and he's caving. I can't see why else someone would dismiss sound reason for some unconstitutional, unprecedented ploy otherwise.
From the Gov:
Thanks for writing, Lindsay. You bring up a couple of very interesting points. First, it’s true that Sidney Powell made Judge Sullivan sort of the “judicial hero” (her words) in the book LICENSE TO LIE. (Bet she won't be doing that again!) So perhaps he overcompensated for the reason you state. WAY overcompensated.
Your second point, as to how baffling his behavior is now –- he seems to be acting not only as judge but as prosecuting attorney –- does, naturally, cause observers to develop “working theories” as you have. Why is he so desperate, increasingly so, to drag out the case that he ignores the law, precedent and exculpatory evidence and, incredibly, has to bring in "outside groups" and even another judge to help him justify the unjustifiable?
I think you’ve hit on something when you say the pressure on Judge Sullivan, especially now that Obama is implicated, must be awful. As Chuck Schumer has said, the intel community has “six ways from Sunday” to get back at you. That power, presumably, could just as easily be applied to a U.S. District Court judge as to anyone else, say, a former national security adviser being openly railroaded in federal court. That’s not to say that this is what happened, but it’s what COULD happen.
There are various crafty ways to apply pressure through direct or implied threats (or rewards) –-- I’m sure we can all think of some of them. The fact that we are even entertaining the possibility of this kind of intimidation shows how far the reputation of the FBI has fallen. Obama’s intel community seems capable of just about anything these days. What we know is the tiniest tip of the iceberg.
As I’ve said many times, when something absolutely defies all logic and common sense, it means there’s something about it we don’t know. That seems to be the case here. It's the "x" in the equation. We may never know what it is, but something is likely going on behind the scenes that, if we knew it, would cause the puzzling Judge Sullivan scenario to make perfect sense.
TRAGIC STORY
This is a tragic story out of New York that reminds us that there are no totally “safe” ways to deal with a pandemic, and that shutting down everything and focusing entirely on the virus also comes at a terrible, even lethal cost.
A NEW POLL
Despite the tireless efforts of the media and the Democrats to blame President Trump for the COVID-19 (Chinese) coronavirus, a new poll administered by YouGov.com finds that 69% of Americans believe the Chinese Communist Party is mostly or somewhat responsible for its spread (if it makes the Trump critics feel better, their efforts have prevented that from being 100% of Americans thinking the Chi Coms are entirely responsible, as they should.) Also, 71% think that China should be penalized in some way. Also, some bad news for Joe Biden: only 6% consider China to be a US ally.
This link has more details on the poll, plus some ideas that are already in motion or being proposed for making China pay.
I have to assume that the tiny minority who are hunky-dory with China would include members of the World Health Organization. This week, the WHO said that despite pleas from the US and other nations, it could not invite Taiwan to an upcoming health summit due to “divergent views,” after China said it “deplores and opposes” including Taiwan. China claims including Taiwan would severely violate the “one China rule.”
I don’t recall voting for that rule, but if I had to pick one China, it sure wouldn’t be the one run from Beijing. Besides, the WHO has included Taiwan on multiple occasions. China is probably desperate to exclude them now because Taiwan would be a major voice at the health summit, having issued early, accurate warnings about the virus (China’s phony denials were echoed by the WHO) and having stopped the COVID-19 pandemic while communist China was inflicting it on its own people and the rest of the world. That would not be good for Beijing P.R.
But at least the leaders of Taiwan shouldn’t feel alone as targets of China’s efforts to silence them. Even after all this time, communist Chinese leaders are still arresting and silencing medical experts who try to speak up about the virus, even as the WHO continues doing their bidding.
Between January 1 and April 4, 500 Chinese people (that we know of) have been arrested for the crime of “speaking out.” That includes approximately 100 journalists jailed, the highest number in the world. And yet major US media outlets assail Trump and defend China.
So why would anyone be surprised that most Americans rightly blame China? Despite China’s many media sycophants, they haven’t been able to suppress the free flow of information here. At least not yet. Although I imagine the Governor of Michigan would love to pass a ban on “speaking out.”
THE "PARTY OF SCIENCE"
One of the left’s favorite knocks on the right is they’re the “party of science,” and we’re the “low information voters.” This flies in the face of studies showing that conservatives are better informed on current events than liberals, but the left’s motto has long been, “If it feels good, believe it.” In fact, studies have shown not only that Republicans are better informed on political issues…
…but they are also more informed about what Democrats think than Democrats are about what Republicans think. Ironically, the disconnect from reality among Democrats gets worse the more “education” they have, because “highly-educated” liberals tend to self-isolate in ideological bubbles and never interact with anyone who disagrees with them (for confirmation, turn on MSNBC for five minutes…but only for five minutes. You don’t want to watch it too long and become less informed.)
The yawning gap between the media cliches of uninformed Republicans and science-embracing Democrats was all over the news yesterday, by a weird quirk of synchronicity (Ivy League Poli Sci majors can Google that word.)
First, we had Sen. Rand Paul being assailed for “questioning medical science” because he challenged the gloomy predictions and prescriptions of Dr. Anthony Fauci. The critics wailed, “Why won’t Republicans listen to the doctors who are experts at COVID-19?!” They didn’t seem aware that Paul is a medical doctor who has not only been a volunteer at a Kentucky hospital treating coronavirus patients, but he’s actually had it himself and recovered from it.
And how did the left illustrate its embrace of hard, empirical scientific expertise? On Wednesday, it was announced that CNN is mounting a townhall with an expert panel on the coronavirus. Those “experts” will include teenage media celebrity and climate change scold, Greta Thunberg. That sparked plenty of mockery, with Donald Trump Jr. remarking on her amazing career: only 17, and she’s already both a world-renowned climate scientist and an expert on the coronavirus.
Meanwhile, Joe Biden announced the creation of a task force to advise his campaign on climate change. It will be co-chaired by socialist ex-bartender/”Green New Deal” booster/Congressional social media star Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and noted scientist John “Logan Act” Kerry. AOC is still a Bernie backer, but her spokesperson said she made the decision to accept the post “with members of the Climate Justice community — and she will be fully accountable to them and the larger advocacy community during this process.”
Nothing says you’re going to follow rigorously wherever the proof leads (the essence of science) like declaring that your top priority is to please a radical left-wing group with the word “Justice” in its name. Aside from the Justice League, you can usually assume any group with “Justice” in its name is about partisan vendettas, not actual justice. And certainly not about science.
Since the claim that Democrats really care about science has now been rendered laughable, here are more details on Biden’s new climate advisors, presented in brutally hilarious style by William Marshall at Townhall.com.
LAUGH OF THE DAY
I’m sure Democrats will call this “mean-spirited,” but nobody out-trolls the Trump campaign – even when it comes to creating their website’s page that informs you you’ve entered a bad link that’s no longer online.
WE KNEW THIS
This will come as no surprise to anyone who’s read this newsletter over the years, but it’s a “bombshell” everywhere else, so I thought I’d highlight it by itself:
Among the latest revelations “unmasked” by acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell is the news that Barack Obama’s CIA Director, John Brennan, suppressed intelligence that Russia actually wanted Hillary Clinton to win the 2016 election, not Trump, as we've been told constantly for the past three years.
I know: it’s hard to believe that Putin would have preferred a US President who had groveled to him with a “reset” button, signed off on Russia buying 20% of the US uranium supply, taken huge donations from Russian sources for her foundation, let her husband take outrageous speaking fees from Russian banks, and used an unsecured email server that Russia surely had hacked, providing them with plenty of blackmail material. No, they would’ve preferred Trump, the candidate who wanted to ratchet up sanctions on Russia, crush their energy exports with US oil and gas, and arm Ukraine to fight Russia. It all makes sense when you know that Trump only launched a quixotic run for President that nobody (but me) thought he could win because if he did miraculously win, that would be the cheapest and easiest way for him to get a permit to build a hotel in Moscow.
If all that makes any sense to you, then you have been watching way too much Rachel Maddow.
