Rep. Duncan Hunter is under investigation by the House Ethics Committee for allegedly using campaign funds for private expenses. Hunter has always been one of the good guys, and I sincerely hope this is just an overblown accounting snafu caused by the arcane campaign finance rules. For his part, Hunter says he was made aware of the problem last year and already took action by reimbursing the campaign. That sounds as if it was a simple human error, not that anyone's political enemies in Washington ever describe such things that way.
I was intrigued to see that one of the accusations against him is that he used $600 of campaign funds to pay for his pet rabbit’s travel during the campaign. Couldn't that be a campaign expense? Maybe it’s a service rabbit. Or maybe he was appealing to the rabbit fan vote. He already had rabid Republicans, maybe he was going for the rabbit Republicans. Sounds to me as if the Ethics Committee is splitting hares.
