Today's Edition: 6 minute read
Normally, I don’t bother remarking on crazy political comments from celebrities’ Twitter feeds because (1.) I have limited time and space, and (2.) who really cares? Some celebrities seem to think that they are vastly influential on public policy, but if even Taylor Swift couldn’t get a Democrat elected in her home state (Marsha Blackburn beat Swift’s choice, Phil Bredesen, by over 10 points), then who is really basing their presidential vote on Bette Midler’s latest rant?
But I’m going to break my rule today because a recent pair of tweets from “Will and Grace” stars Eric McCormack and Debra Messing (who rants leftwards on Twitter at Midler-esque volume) exposed a particularly ugly and hypocritical side of the Hollywood left and brought down a heavy backlash, even among some on the left.
Hurricane Dorian update
By Mike Huckabee
As I write this, there’s some good news: Hurricane Dorian has been downgraded to a category 3 storm and has yet to make landfall, but it’s still uncertain where and when it will. Puerto Rico escaped the worst, but the storm is still battering the Bahamas. It’s caused major damage there, but the extent is not yet known. I hope you’ll continue to pray for the victims and give to Samaritan’s Purse (www.samaritanspurse.org ), which is preparing to fly in aid as soon as the storm passes and wherever they’re needed, whether in the Caribbean or the US mainland.
It’s not easy to think of a way to make a natural disaster like Dorian worse, but one surefire way is to try to exploit it for political advantage. President Trump has been intently focused on preparing for the storm for the past few days, and even canceled a planned trip to Poland to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the start of World War II.
For his efforts, he’s been attacked by leftists both in the US and abroad. Trump was accused of being a racist who didn’t care that Puerto Rico was about to be devastated again. When the storm bypassed Puerto Rico and that attack fizzled, they switched to claiming that his intense storm preparations in Florida were because he only cared about white people (as we all know, there are no Hispanics in Florida, right?) Can you imagine what they would have said if he hadn’t ordered intense preparations in Florida? (“Uncaring, incompetent,” etc. etc.)
And of course, when he took a break on Sunday for a round of golf, he was blasted by both Democrat Presidential hopefuls and London Mayor Sadiq Khan, a longtime Trump critic whose only idea for stopping killings in his own city is banning everything more lethal than a limp egg noodle, but who seems to think he knows more about hurricane preparedness than the President of the United States. He also seems to think there’s no difference between taking a quick round of golf nearby and flying from DC to Poland and back.
I reject any suggestions of hypocrisy in defending Trump because I also defended Obama and George W. Bush when their opponents blasted them for playing golf. The Presidency is the highest-pressure job on Earth. Whoever holds it needs regular breaks, exercise and fresh air, and some time away from all the politics to experience the beauty of God’s natural creation and regain his perspective (personally, I prefer a duck blind or a deer stand, but if you’re not fortunate enough to have those, a golf course will have to do.)
Besides, thanks to my personal acquaintance with several Presidents, I’m now going to let you in on a state secret. When the President is on the golf course, he’s not out of communication with all the people handling hurricane preparations. If he needs to be reached, the White House doesn’t have to send a Secret Service agent on horseback to the 9th hole to fetch him.
The President now has access to a miraculous piece of advanced electronic equipment that allows him to send and receive texts, letters and even phone calls anywhere in the world instantly. It gives him access to news from around the world and the latest weather radar updates in real time. This incredible piece of space-age technology is called a “smartphone.” With this, he is free to go anywhere and still be in constant touch with FEMA and other agencies handling storm prep. He no longer has to sit in the Oval Office, waiting for carrier pigeons to arrive.
I hope I haven’t given away too much. But since James Comey was the head of the FBI, and he taught us that it’s okay to reveal state secrets as long as you believe you’re doing a public service, I figured I’d risk it.
“Call Sign Chaos: Learning to Lead”
By Mike Huckabee
I was assured that when former Defense Secretary James Mattis’ book “Call Sign Chaos: Learning to Lead” arrived, that what he had to say would be devastating to the Trump Administration. But while the book doesn’t recount any conversations with Trump, it does describe how then-Vice President Joe Biden was so adamant about pulling troops out of Iraq that he refused to listen to people who knew more about the situation and warned him of the dangers.
Mattis writes that he liked Biden and “found him an admirable and amiable man,” but that when he’d made up his mind, he refused to listen to any more information. Just as Mattis warned him, once all US troops were pulled out, the Iraq prime minister began targeting Sunnis. Mattis writes, “Iraq slipped back into escalating violence. It was like watching a car wreck in slow motion,” and it led to ISIS being able to move in and take over…“It would take many years and tens of thousands of casualties, plus untold misery for millions of innocents, to break ISIS’s geographic hold. All of this was predicted — and preventable.”
This won’t be news to those of us who lived through eight years of Obama/Biden, but it is a good reminder that returning to those days is also easily preventable.
The incalculable damage done to America’s military during the Obama years
By Mike Huckabee
In addition to James Mattis’ book, there’s another new book that details the incalculable damage done to America’s military during the Obama years. I wrote just last week about Obama’s tendency to appoint people to oversee the military who were academics with no military experience and to promote into leadership roles political supporters with no combat experience.
Afghanistan War veteran James Hasson joined the army at the start of Obama’s first term and left it at the end of his second. He’s written a book detailing the changes instituted to turn the military into a progressive social laboratory and the dangerous erosion they caused in military morale and readiness. The book is called “Stand Down: How Social Justice Warriors are Sabotaging America’s Military Readiness.”
The book describes how standards were lowered to promote inclusivity, efforts were made to end “hyper-masculinity” in combat arms units, and “safe spaces” and sensitivity training about micro-aggressions and transgender recruits took precedence over preparing to fight and win wars. There are more details and an interview with Tucker Carlson at the link.
Thankfully, President Trump has been working to reverse many of these suicidal policies, even in the face of constant lawsuits from the left. I guess they think that if we are attacked by an opposition military force, we won’t need to fight and defeat them. We can just sue them into submission
I wanted to make sure you also read these comments:
“Beto” O’Rourke has repeatedly proven himself not to be Presidential material, but he might have found a calling perfect for his level of maturity: T-shirt salesman. (Warning: Vulgar language. But it’s “Beto,” so what do you expect?)
This is a very interesting piece by S.G. Cheah at Medium.com, comparing the Marxist culture of China that’s trampling the freedoms of Hong Kong to the efforts of America’s Marxist culture to trample the freedoms of Americans.
When you see the brutal tactics being put into place to crush the attempts of people in Hong Kong to express their God-given freedoms, remember that these are the same tactics that are openly espoused by those here who celebrate socialism and communism while trying to demonize and silence anyone who disagrees with them. And if you think I’m overstating it, try Googling the phrase “Bernie Sanders praises China.” Because yes, he did that, just last week, even as they were massing troops on the border to crush the protesters.
