Sunday, a group of 10 Senate Republicans and 10 Democrats announced that they had reached a “breakthrough” deal on a "framework" of new gun laws. It’s not yet in the form of legislation. It doesn’t ban any particular guns, the way many Democrats want; but it includes money for mental health and school security, it would add juvenile records to background checks for any gun buyers under 21, it would deny guns to people convicted of domestic violence, and it includes grants for states to institute “red flag” laws.

These Republicans argue that it would be easier for people caught in red flag laws to appeal on the state level, but I’d say that depends on the state. Some of the provisions are sensible, like increasing school security, while others sound sensible on the surface but wouldn’t have prevented recent school shootings (for instance, most of the shooters didn’t have anything on their records for a background check to catch.)

Even though having the support of 10 Republicans might seem to make this a slam dunk in the Senate, it’s not clear whether Democrats who are pushing for much more radical plans will settle for it, or whether these Republicans will all stand firm after they hear from their constituents, or after they see what Democrats might try to add to it. And it will take 60 votes to overcome a filibuster.

In the meantime, conservative commentators are wondering why Republicans so close to a midterm election would want to tick off their constituents by backing new anti-gun laws that are wildly unpopular with them? (Daniel Horowitz, senior editor at The Blaze, noticed that of those 10 GOP Senators, four are retiring and none of the others are running for reelection this year. Coincidence?)

Even laws as seemingly reasonable as red flag laws can be abused to deny Second Amendment rights to someone who’s done nothing wrong. Good luck trying to convince Republican voters that they can trust the government never to falsely brand them as dangerous extremists or domestic terrorists.

The NRA issued a statement, but declined to go into detail until the “framework” actually becomes a piece of legislation.

At these links, Rick Moran of PJ Media and Spencer Brown of Townhall.com have more thoughts on this subject.

And Kevin Downey of PJ Media goes further, pointing out that Democrat DA’s aren’t even trying to arrest and lock up the people who are committing the vast majority of shootings. They call it “social justice” or “justice reform,” but Downey’s theory is that leftist DA’s have deliberately created a crime wave to give them an excuse to disarm the law-abiding.

Regarding "The Blaze, noticed that of those 10 GOP Senators, four are retiring and none of the others are running for reelection this year. Coincidence?) " . No it's not a coincidence they're interviewing with the demonocrates for their next job. Portman from Ohio always has been a fake conservative but once his son came out as gay he became a full blown demonocrate. He tricked Ohioans the last election, which was after his son came out but he knew the gig was up and could never get re-elected in Ohio.

Sorry, but I don't trust our government any longer. It would be nuts to hand the power to restrict gun rights to institutions that have deliberately destroyed the rule of law in this country. What sane American would vote to empower the worst institutions in the country with further means to protect political allies and destroy political opponents?

When a larger number of people realize the 2 sided Justice/Injustice system that exists, then the wheels will really start to fall off this society and it will become every person for themselves. Just look at WA as an example, where cops can no longer pursue speeders or drunk drivers. Guess what, more and more people don't even stop when a cop red lights them. And how many others will decide to shoot first and ask questions later? Lots of people will be getting away with it, if they are on the right side of the aisle or the right color for those in power.

I am losing faith in this country and government.

I do not believe one need to prove anything to exercise any inherent and unalienable rights protected in the Bill of Rights. And in the case of arms, I believe the people should have access, through free market resources, to all those arms in common use today, including those used by law enforcement. Such rights should only be able to be infringed through the act of legal due process as applied to other rights.

The “Red flag” part of the anti-gun law seems suspicious to me. I wouldn’t put it past this Administration to refuse guns to Republicans or to anyone disagreeing with their policies!!! That would be a red flag in their minds!!! They are so deceptive, and the “truth is not in them!” They’ve proven over and over that they can’t be trusted. Please don’t use my whole name!

    Deliberately creating crime waves
    Deliberately creating food shortages
Deliberately creating chaos when they should be solving the problems that in many cases they themselves have created.
America should have Never fallen to less than 70% self sufficient on products manufactured or consumed in our country, we will forever be susceptible to other governments who have long seeked our demise ??????

I agree my son even goes a step further and wonders if certain US hating beings or groups are purposly finding mentally unstable persons and putting into their heads to do the mass shootings in order to take to guns. Conspiracy theory all you want, but in this day and time at my age, I have seen plenty of evidence that "evil" exist, it is in people and they do evil planned, thought out and carried out. Enough crime and the people will cry out for help the goverment will be all too happy to give you the help through Marshal Law and gun confiscation. The goal of this government is to reduce the population to servants controlled by the "elite and enlighten" for their own good and will pursue this goal to the distruction of America. They are short sighted in that ALL in America will suffer and they will not escape their own planned disasters. What goes around comes around. Hate destroyes the container that carries it, eventually.

This is incredibly encouraging, and in line with Matthew Mcconaughey's earnest appeals for gun responsibility over gun bans, with enforcement managed by the state and not by the federal government. I'd like to see more of the same, with mandatory background checks and waiting periods. I think that's more in the spirit of the "well regulated militia" that the founders envisioned.
