Tuesday, there was a shooting outside an elementary school in Red Bluff, California. At this writing, word is that four people are dead and 10 wounded, including two children wounded but none killed. The shooter, reported to be 43-year-old Kevin Neal, was confronted and shot dead by police. Police said he went on a “bizarre and murderous rampage” and tried to enter the school, but teachers heard the shots outside and having drilled for such an occasion, went into lockdown mode, heroically keeping him out and likely saving countless lives. Neal was already facing charges over an assault and stabbing involving two neighbors. One neighbor said police had been alerted that Neal was “crazy” and threatening people, and his neighbors felt more should have been done to keep tabs on him. Sounds like the kind of person who never should have had access to guns under existing California laws.
