Add Illinois to the list

June 4, 2019

While most of the media attention is on states such as Alabama and Georgia that have passed bills restricting abortion, we hear a lot less about states like New York that have passed pro-abortion bills that make abortion legal up to and even beyond the point of birth.  Now, add Illinois to that list.

Their radical bill sports the type of misleading euphemistic name applied to all pro-abortion measures: it's called the “Reproductive Health Bill,” because they can’t call it the “Unfettered Slaughter of Children in the Womb and Hang Any Concerns About Health” bill.  From the Chicago Tribune:

“The bill establishes the ‘fundamental right’ of a women to have an abortion and states that a ‘fertilized egg, embryo or fetus does not have independent rights.’ It repeals the Illinois Abortion Law of 1975, doing away with provisions for spousal consent, waiting periods, criminal penalties for physicians who perform abortions and other restrictions on facilities where abortions are performed.”

I anxiously await word from Disney to see if they plan to move the shooting of their family-friendly entertainment to Illinois. They might also bump into Dr. Kermit Gosnell, who, if he ever gets out of prison, might want to relocate to Chicago.

To quote the bill’s sponsor, Democratic state Sen. Melinda Bush, “I am proud to say Illinois is a beacon. For women’s rights, for human rights.”  I’m sorry, but claiming that a child in the womb is not human makes you a beacon for willful, cold-hearted ignorance.  I thought the left opposed “science deniers.”

But it must be pointed out that while Roe v. Wade was terrible law and constitutionally unjustified, it did impose a national standard with some limits.  If it’s overturned, the pro-life side has always conceded that abortion would return to being a state-level issue.  It’s been the other side that’s misrepresented it by claiming that overturning Roe would result in banning abortion.  It might in some states, but as we now see, in others, it would result in pro-abortion laws so radical that in effect, they legalize infanticide (I know the left screams that that isn’t true, but what do you call it when they not only legalize abortion up to the point of birth, they actually defend doctors standing around, debating whether to provide help to a baby that’s already been born?)

Let’s hope that if the SCOTUS does revisit Roe v. Wade, it will bear in mind that simply striking it down would result in the legalized murder of countless children in certain states.  To fight this kind of legalized genocide, the pro-life side needs to work even harder, not just at electing candidates who value life, but at winning hearts and minds.  And that won’t be easy, when their opponents’ hearts are that cold and their minds that closed to the truth.
