Last Ditch Effort

In a last ditch (some might say kamikaze) effort to save her House seat, Rep. Liz Cheney is running an ad featuring her dad, former VP Dick Cheney saying that former President Trump is a “coward” who “lost big,” that “a real man wouldn’t lie to his supporters,” and “in our nation’s 246-year history, there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump.”

https://www.westernjournal.com/dick-cheney-slings-personal-insults-donald-trump-last-minute-attack-ad-daughter-liz/

I don’t like seeing Republicans form a circular firing squad, so I’m going to be careful about what I say here. But I have a hard time believing someone as knowledgeable about history and world affairs as Dick Cheney seriously believes that Donald Trump is the biggest threat to America in its history. That’s the kind of eye-rolling hyperbole that we used to hear from the left back when Bush and Cheney were in office, and we kept hearing that they were war criminals who should be tried in the World Court and executed, and that Cheney lied about WMDs to start a war in Iraq. They called Dick Cheney “Darth Cheney” and compared him to Hitler and Dracula.

I’m also old enough to remember 2016-2020 under Trump, which if you take away all the phony scandals and hyperventilating hateful press, was a time of nearly unprecedented peace and prosperity, as well as fairly moderate, pro-American but not far-right views. Not to bring up a sore point, but I remember Trump being the first President in decades who didn’t start any new wars. I don’t like the way his term ended, but I didn’t feel America was threatened by having a President who crushed ISIS and brought peace to the Middle East through the Abraham Accords.

I can’t figure out who this ad is for. If it’s aimed at winning the primary for Liz, it’s just going to infuriate a lot of Republicans, and I can’t imagine Democrats crossing over to vote for her because the man they hated more than anyone on Earth (until Trump came along) told them to.

Unless, of course, they only vilify people when it's politically expedient, then turn on a dime when embracing them becomes useful. But that would call into question anything they say about anybody, including Trump. Hmmmm...

"Gain of function" reasearch update

Say, remember “gain of function research?” That’s where scientists gamble with all our lives by genetically modifying a virus to make it more contagious, so it’s easier to study its potential effects on humans. This is done in hopes it doesn’t escape the lab and kill millions of people (not that THAT would ever happen!) It’s so dangerous that the Obama Administration banned it, but the NIH reportedly kept funding it anyway through indirect grants.

Well, this week, Senate Republicans put forth measures to cut off funding to universities and foreign nations that won’t end gain of function research. And the Democrats blocked the bills. Because, hey: what could go wrong?

Uphill battle

As much as I’m hoping for a “red wave” in November to swamp both Houses of Congress, the fact is that retaking the Senate will be an uphill battle. By sheer luck, this year, Republicans are defending 21 seats while Democrats are defending only 14. And it’s harder to remove a Senator in a statewide race than to flip a House District.

Now that we know pretty well who all the candidates will be, analyst Larry Sabato of the Center for Politics has moved likely control of the Senate from “Leans Democrat” to “Toss-up.” Republicans have a number of Trump-endorsed candidates with no government experience, and it’s not yet clear whether voters will see that as a positive or negative. They will also be relentlessly attacked by the media, just like Trump was.

https://pjmedia.com/news-and-politics/rick-moran/2022/08/04/senate-now-rated-a-toss-up-after-most-primaries-have-been-held-n1618366

This isn’t meant to discourage you, just to remind you to ignore the polls, and don’t get complacent. If the GOP is to retake both the House and Senate, it will require a lot of work, voting and getting everyone you know to vote, and watching the polls while voting in numbers that are beyond the margin of possible fraud. Oh, and let your state officials know that you will not tolerate any more mass mail-in ballots and unattended drop boxes because they’re just so afraid of monkeypox.

Newsom nonsense

I recently wrote about how adorable it was that a USA Today editorialist thought the Democrats could be shamed for their unethical/should-be-illegal practice of meddling in GOP primaries to boost what they think are the weakest candidates. She seriously believed that those people have a sense of shame! Well, she’s apparently not the only liberal laboring under that delusion. Brace yourself for a case of the giggles: California Gov. Gavin Newsom is trying to shame Hollywood liberals for not respecting freedom enough!

https://townhall.com/columnists/timgraham/2022/08/05/gavin-newsom-lectures-hollywood-on-values-n2611318

Of course, Newsom has an extremely selective definition of freedom. If you want the freedom to attend church, speak freely, keep any of the money you earn, open your business, walk alone on a beach unmasked without being arrested, drive a car that doesn’t need an extension cord, or eat at a restaurant or vacation in a red state like Gavin Newsom, forget it. But if you want to marry someone of the same sex, force your way into the bathrooms and showers of the opposite sex, or demonstrate gay sex to kindergarteners, those are freedoms he can get behind.

And now, he’s trying to shame Hollywood into bringing movie and TV productions back to California from red states because they don’t respect the “freedom” to kill babies in the womb up to the moment of birth. Tim Graham at Townhall.com writes:

“Newsom tweeted angrily at the Hollywood elites: ‘You can protect your workers, or continue to support anti-abortion states that rule with hatred.’ That's the weirdest take. Nobody is more hated in an abortion than the victim of the abortion. It's like the babies are invisible in the liberal picture.

The governor argued anti-abortion states ‘have waged a cruel assault on essential rights,’ and it's only worsened since the ‘abhorrent’ Supreme Court decision.

‘They are carrying out these attacks brazenly and with the intent to cause pain in the communities they target -- many of whom are essential to the success of your industry,’ continued Newsom. ‘Today more than ever, you have a responsibility to take stock of your values -- and those of your employees -- when doing business in those states.’”

(I love the way he just assumes that every person employed in Hollywood is as radically pro-abortion as he is. Talk to Patricia Heaton about that.)

Of course, Hollywood continues to make movies, even films celebrating abortion, in pro-life red states to avoid the high taxes and expensive regulations and union requirements of California. They might claim that the “freedom” to kill babies in the womb is the most important “freedom,” but the most important freedom in Hollywood is and always has been the freedom to make as much money as possible.

Big Salute

A big salute to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is having a barnburner of a week, showing other Republicans how to deal with the media, officer holders who think they get to decide which laws should and shouldn’t be enforced…

https://redstate.com/brandon_morse/2022/08/04/auto-draft-26-n606782

And even doctors who think their personal political views are a “Get Out of Jail Free” card for ignoring state laws.

https://www.westernjournal.com/desantis-calls-harsh-repercussions-doctors-performing-life-altering-surgeries-children/

I guess it shouldn’t be a surprise that someone who’s the Governor of Florida would be so good at draining the swamp.

Given the Woke ANTI CHRISTIAN beliefs, it may be that many of the hundreds of new IRS agents will be used to check on the policies of churches' SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE practices.

How about we start a campaign calling for volunteers to monitor those drop boxes where the left still wants to have them?

Monitoring them with video gear so we can easily verify any ballot stuffing is going on. Seems like it would be easy to get a lot of volunteers.

Just another way to ensure it's not the same old thing.

One of the most ancient of ethical practices for doctors is to do no harm. Being a preteen or teen is by definition dysfunctional. It is that time between total reliance on parents and other adults and growing into reliance on oneself . I doubt there is a young person that has ever existed that has not had moments when they doubt themselves, the attractiveness of their body parts, aspects of their personality or any of the other things that goes through the minds of adolescents. Now we have people who are foisting a sure cure for their angst into their faces. Not only that, it has somehow become “cool” to think one would be happier as the opposite sex. We have profEssionals in mental and physical health practices who are affirming sex change as a panacea for the issues that confront perfectly normal kids, just undergoing the pangs of growing up. These surgeries are nothing short if child abuse mutilations by those who have lost all sense of moral or ethical boundaries. It is that simple. There are some things that are just plain wrong and this is one of them.

    Thoughts for the day:
Unbelievable that the democrats would not cut off funding to universities and WORSE yet foreign nations for gain of function research which needs to be outlawed!
    G. Newsome is a mentally depraved, sick person...period.
Kuddoos to Governor DeSantis for standing up for what's right.

Always appreciate your updates, Mike. Been a fan of yours since I worked for a Little Rock company in the 2000s. Kicked around downtown many a time and carry oodles of great memories. In fact, probably not too many around who, like me, still have their Huckabee 2008 hats. So, really, I just wanted to drop you a line and say thanks for all you do!
