The ultra “progressive” leaders of Seattle seem determined to prove that “I’m from the government and I’m here to help you” truly does deserve to rank as the biggest lie of all time.
A few years ago, they voted to “help” low-wage workers by gradually raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour. The added cost to restaurants and other small businesses forced owners to lay people off, reduce hours and delay hiring. A University of Washington study found that costs to low-wage workers outweighed benefits by 3-1, and the average minimum wage worker lost $125 a month. That’s not to mention the loss to customers of businesses that had to close, and the lost tax revenues. Thanks for the "help," guys!
Well, having “helped” small business employees to the unemployment line, Seattle officials are now preparing to do the same favor to employees of large businesses. The City Council just voted unanimously to put a $275-per-worker tax on for-profit businesses with over $20 million in yearly revenues. They claim they need the money to deal with a growing homeless problem (gee, I wonder why a place that offers lots of benefits to the unproductive while punishing those who hire people would have a growing number of homeless residents?) You know what Ronald Reagan said: if you want less of something, you tax it...and they're taxing employment.
Two of the city’s biggest cash cows…sorry, “employers”…are denouncing the move and threatening to relocate to more business-friendly environs. They note that city revenues have nearly doubled since 2010, far outpacing population growth. They say Seattle doesn’t have a revenue problem, it has a spending problem: its leaders spend too much money and spend it too inefficiently.
What sort of cold-hearted capitalists would say such a thing? The notoriously liberal Amazon and Starbucks! Starbucks recently made news by being so cowed by social justice warriors that they’re turning their stores into public bathrooms and hangouts for homeless people who don’t buy anything (we’ll see how well that idea goes over with their paying customers.)
When city officials have veered so far left, they’re threatening to drive Starbucks out of Seattle, well...it’s time to wake up and smell the coffee.
