Well, it’s official: I’m back before the government is!

Admit it: you missed me more, didn’t you?

This afternoon, Congressional leaders will meet with President Trump at the White House.  Here is some more detail on the upcoming meeting:

https://www.foxnews.com/us/hill-leaders-to-attend-white-house-briefing-on-border

If they do reach a deal, that means the media have only a few hours left to blame Trump for the shutdown, so I’m sure you’ll be hearing a constant stream of it between now and then. As the Washington Examiner’s Byron York notes, can you imagine the media coverage if a Democratic President had stayed in Washington over a holiday, offering to work on a compromise to end a government shutdown, and the leader of Congressional Republicans had refused to talk to him and jetted off to a luxury resort in Hawaii instead?  Their meltdown would make Mt. Vesuvius look like a campfire!

Thomas' wife under fire

By Mike Huckabee

Justice Clarence Thomas’ wife is under fire by the media for sharing a few Facebook memes that seem to me to be nothing more than a little hyperbole or humor based on obvious truths, but that are being denounced as “far-right” by far-leftists who would never dream of calling themselves “far-left,” even though they obviously are. Their outrage reminds me of a quote from drive-in movie critic “Joe Bob Briggs”: when people tell him that what he says might be right, but it isn’t nice to say it, he thinks, “Remember when it was enough just to be right?”

Ainsworth: Start-of-year prediction about Michelle Obama

By Laura Ainsworth

Now that Michelle Obama has been named “Most Admired Woman” for 2018, it’s time for me to make a prediction for 2019:  The former First Lady will toss her hat in the ring for 2020, and she will get her party’s nomination.

Her PR machine, which has quietly percolated ever since Hillary lost, went full-tilt in September with the November 13 release of her book, BECOMING.  (One might ask, “BECOMING what?”  I say “becoming a presidential nominee.”)  Book signings used to be casual events --- remember? --- where, for just the price of the book, fans could get in line to meet the author, shake hands, snap a photo and take home an autographed copy.  According to the New York Times, if you wanted a front-row seat at Barclay’s Center and an opportunity to “meet and greet” Michelle and take a selfie, it would set you back $3,000.  If you were in a wheelchair, you could be seated at the back for $400.  Nosebleed seats went for $29.50.

This was part of a 10-city tour put together by Live Nation, the world’s largest concert promoter, which handles about 500 artists, including Beyonce, U2, and Miley Cyrus.  Tickets by Ticketmaster.  She’s not the first person to kick off a book with the equivalent of a concert tour (Hillary did that, back when she could still draw a fair crowd), but this one appears to have been the biggest and most expensive.

Happy New Year

By Mike Huckabee

I was going to write a wrap-up of 2018, but then I realized that I’d already done that when I wrote a wrap-up of 2016.  That’s because so many people who major voices in the media or politics have spent the past two years living in a time loop, unable to move forward from that shocking moment over two years ago when they discovered that Americans might actually not want a President who calls them sexist, racist, homophobic, Islamophobic, xenophobic deplorables to their faces.

In my New Year’s Day message for 2017, this is what I wrote:

”I hope you’re not nursing a hangover from last night.   But if you are, at least take solace in knowing that the long national binge drunk that was 2016 is blessedly over.  Last year saw Americans battered by a politicized media and over a billion dollars in attack ads designed to drive us all further apart and into warring fiefdoms.  While far too many Americans remain 'bitter clingers,' refusing to stop fighting a battle that was over in November, let’s hope they’ll come to realize how much of that anger and animosity they feel was ginned up by political theater, invented by consultants who profit and gain power from fomenting divisiveness.

Fired

By Mike Huckabee

I’m glad to see that the Cleveland Clinic has fired this person, and that the story is making news so there will be no chance of her being hired again for any position that gives her power over medical patients.  But the question remains, why was she hired in the first place?  The clinic says its dedication to “diversity” and “inclusion” insures it will protect Jewish patients, but was it misguided dedication to “diversity” and “inclusion” that led them to hire someone with deep-seated anti-Semitic sentiments and not do the due diligence to find out, even though they were posted on-line for the entire world to see?

Kim's speech

By Mike Huckabee

North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un gave his New Year’s address yesterday.  It’s always analyzed for clues as to what he might be planning next.  This year’s address was scrutinized especially closely, coming after a year in which he seemed to be pursuing denuclearization and normalized relations with the world one minute, then backtracking the next.

At the link is a detailed explication of Kim’s speech, from his words to his choice of setting, and what it might all mean.  Short version: Some cautionary signals we’ll need to watch out for, but overall, better than many experts anticipated.

Great moments in journalism

By Mike Huckabee

MSNBC blamed President Trump and his enforcement of immigration laws (reminder: that’s his job) for “forcing” foreigners to take dangerous routes to evade capture when they enter the US illegally. You know, the same way banks force people to rob them by refusing to hand out money for free.

Perhaps instead of building a wall, we should just build a giant, one-way moving sidewalk from Central America to San Diego.  I bet Pelosi and Schumer would fund that.  But I’d better stop before I give them any more ideas…

Warren's announcement

By Mike Huckabee

Despite the embarrassment of a DNA test showing that Sen. Elizabeth Warren is about as much of a Native American as I am a Bernie Sanders voter, Warren seems determined to press ahead with a run for the White House.  But her announcement on New Year’s Eve took a bizarre turn, as she tried to emulate the success of Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s live-streaming of her dinner preparations in her kitchen.

What made AOC seem relatable to her fans just made people question Warren’s judgement, when she live-streamed herself drinking a beer in her kitchen.  Critics said it seemed phony and pandering, as she’s definitely the Chardonnay type; or that it seemed a little worrisome that she was live-streaming herself drinking alone. It also made it a bit “problematic” for Democrats to continue attacking Justice Brett Kavanaugh for saying he liked beer.

https://www.westernjournal.com/ct/leftists-bashed-kavanaugh-drinking-beer-approval-elizabeth-warren/

At this link is a column comparing Warren getting tanked on brewskis to Michael Dukakis getting into a tank and tanking his own presidential campaign.

https://legalinsurrection.com/2019/01/elizabeth-warrens-dukakis-tank-moment-2/

It certainly wasn’t the most auspicious way to kick off a campaign for the White House, but I don’t know if it was a fatal blunder.  Sure, she’ll have to beat 20 or 30 or 40 other Democrats who want the job.  But after you get a gander at that crew, someone who drinks beer alone in her kitchen might not look that bad.  In fact, seeing the entire Democratic Presidential field might drive anyone to drink.

If the house has already passed a budget bill with funds for the wall and sent it to the senate, why can't McConnell hold it till Fri. and let the Rep. majority vote using the neucular option? Pardon my spelling.
