California is getting a hard lesson in the Constitution’s supremacy clause, which states that when state laws and state constitutions conflict with the federal laws and Constitution, federal law prevails. So despite California’s leftist leaders declaring it a “sanctuary state” and refusing to cooperate with federal immigration authorities to deport criminal illegal immigrants, the feds are rounding them up anyway.
Over the past week, ICE launched a sweep of Los Angeles that targeted 122 businesses and arrested 212 illegals. It follows similar raids up north, in San Jose and San Francisco. In all, over 500 people have been arrested, without any help from local authorities. ICE released a statement that 90% of the arrestees have prior criminal convictions, to make it clear that they are targeting known criminals who were being shielded and allowed to walk around free by state and local governments.
However, as if to rub California leaders’ noses in it, they noted that since local authorities won’t cooperate by handing over known criminals for deportation, they have no choice but to make blanket sweeps like this, “increasing the incidents of collateral arrests.” In other words, illegal immigrants who don’t have criminal records are now getting caught in the raids. The “sanctuary” policy is making it more likely, not less likely, that illegals who aren’t convicted criminals will also get arrested and deported.
I don’t think that was what California liberals envisioned when they tried defying the federal government. But then, they should have dusted off a history book and read about the Civil War, if they wanted to know how that plan was going to end.

ICE also just released a report that blows away one of the favored narratives on the left, that illegal immigrants are more law-abiding than the average American. It reports that 90% of the illegals rounded up by ICE in fiscal year 2017 either had criminal records or criminal charges pending against them. And here’s another narrative buster: the number of illegals arrested in 2017 was about half as many as in Obama’s first year, and at that time, 61% of the arrestees were non-criminals.
One thing wasn’t surprising, though: it was far more likely that an arrestee in a California sanctuary city would have a criminal record than an illegal arrested in New Jersey. But for the record, New Jersey has a new Democratic Governor, Phil Murphy, who wants to make New Jersey a sanctuary state, so that could help even out the unfair distribution of criminals.
