Following this weekend’s horrific shooting in a California synagogue, here are how some of the leading Democratic candidates for President responded.  There was a lot of condemnation of gun ownership, but barely a word condemning anti-Semitism.

For the record, President Trump responded that the shooting "looked like a hate crime" and later said at a rally in Wisconsin, “Our entire nation mourns the loss of life, prays for the wounded and stands in solidarity with the Jewish community. We forcefully condemn the evils of anti-Semitism and hate, which must be defeated."

Trump also praised an off-duty Border Patrol agent who happened to be armed and on the scene (a “good guy with a gun” is the common phrase) and who fired at the attacker as he was fleeing, possibly preventing further deaths.

Speaking of the left’s blindspot for anti-Semitism, many these days are on automatic pilot when it comes to branding anyone who disagrees with them as bigots.  Even if you said nothing at all that was bigoted, they will pick out certain words and declare them to be “dog whistles”: words that carry some alleged ugly connotation that only bigots can hear.

Well, do you know how I would define a “dog whistle” that reveals you’re a bigot?  When you run a cartoon that literally depicts the leader of Israel as a dog (a common trope in vile anti-Semitic circles), like the New York Times did last week.

Joining the esteemed ranks of such organizations as Hamas, ISIS, al-Qaeda and the KKK, the Times illustrated a story on US-Israel policy with an editorial cartoon depicting Benjamin Netanyahu as a dog with a Star of David on its collar, leading a blind President Trump, who is wearing a yarmulke for some reason known only to the twisted mind of the cartoonist (do leftists now accuse Trump of being both a Nazi and a Jew?  It’s like when they accused George W. Bush of being either a bumbling idiot or an evil Machiavellian genius, depending on which slander was convenient at the time.)

The cartoon rightly raised a firestorm of response from a wide spectrum of readers, from Netanyahu’s son to Muslim peace advocate Imam Mohamad Tawhidi, who wrote that “militant Islamist texts refer to Jewish people as ‘the ancestors of pigs, monkeys and dogs.’” He accused the Times of furthering ISIS’ agenda by printing a cartoon that would be right at home on the wall of an ISIS terrorist.

The Times’ editors printed a statement reading in part, “The image was offensive, and it was an error in judgement to publish it.  It was provided by the New York Times News Service and Syndicate, which has since deleted it.”  Critics pointed out that missing from that statement were any words such as “sorry” or “we apologize.”

I’m not the kind of person who is quick to take offense where none is meant, and I think we have way too much of that in society already.  But that doesn’t apply in this case.  Considering that the New York Times’ editors consider it their job and talent to tell the rest of us what to think on a daily basis, it is unfathomable that they could not have seen how offensive that cartoon was.  It wasn’t just an anti-Semitic “dog whistle,” it was more like a factory whistle.

But then, in recent days, the left has been turning a blind eye to a lot of anti-Semitism within its own ranks, making excuses and denials for it, and trying to accuse anyone who criticizes it of being bigoted against the sources.  Well, if liberal media outlets and politicians don’t like being called out for blatant anti-Semitism in their ranks, then the solution is to condemn it wholeheartedly themselves, not to join in.  Or have the denials become so ingrained that they can actually look at that vile cartoon and not even see the anti-Semitism?  If that’s what’s wrong, then I prescribe a trip to the United States Holocaust Museum in Washington for a refresher course on right and wrong.

California State University-Long Beach is doing away with its longtime team mascot, Prospector Pete, to appease the protests of students who claim the image is offensive because “the 1849 California gold rush was a time in history when the indigenous peoples of California endured subjugation, violence and threats of genocide” so the mascot represents “colonization, white supremacy, racism and exclusion.”

Seems like an awful lot of guilt to heap onto the shoulders of a crusty old guy with a pie pan, leaning over a creek.

Even though Prospector Pete was chosen in 1949 simply to represent that students had “struck the gold of education” by coming there, officials caved and not only yanked the mascot but removed a statue of him.  So I guess the real message is: “This is no longer the gold standard of education.”

Now we can add the old Gabby Hayes-like prospector to the long, long, and ever-lengthening list of things from American history that must be thrown down the black hole of history, never to be seen nor spoken of again; everyone from Thomas Jefferson to Robert E. Lee to Kate Smith to…well, name your favorite contemporary celebrity who accidentally slipped up and said something too reasonable.

A spokeswoman for the university said, “This is not about political correctness; it’s about correcting the historical record.” But is it really about “correcting” the historical record, or erasing it?

I can’t help wondering what these people really think they’re accomplishing by vanishing everything in history that’s even marginally related to something that’s not in line with their current, ever-changing standards.  Do they think it changes history to pretend it didn’t happen?  Are they seriously stupid enough to think that not looking at mistakes of the past will make them less likely to repeat them in the future?  Do they think that whatever negatives they can dig up should obliterate everything positive?  Do they believe that simply depicting or putting up a statue of something from the past means we wholeheartedly endorse everything about it?  FDR did a lot of things Democrats think are great.  He also limited the number of Jewish refugees from the Nazis that we would take in and put Japanese-Americans in internment camps; so let’s remove all monuments to him and scrub him from the history books.

For many years, the left complained that American history classes only glorified the accomplishments of white males. So textbook writers started adding the contributions of women and people of color, as they should, to give students a more comprehensive view.  But apparently, that wasn’t enough.  Instead of learning about every important figure of history (good, bad and in-between), those who displease leftists are first smeared, then banished to the corn field.  Once again, students receive a biased, inaccurate and incomplete picture of American history, except now it’s an entirely negative picture.

For example, this new textbook that may be coming to your kids’ school in 2020...

And here’s some information on its author…

If your kids’ school wants to use it, you should react as if they were welcoming a measles carrier into the classroom.

This sort of thing doesn’t arise from wanting to give students a more complete view of American history.  It comes from a desire to obliterate American history and convince students there is nothing redeeming in this nation’s heritage.  Anyone who hears the slogan “Make America Great Again” and angrily responds that “America was never great” should not be in charge of teaching our kids about their nation’s history since they obviously know nothing about the subject.

If you’re not sick of this topic yet, this is a very good point-by-point summary of the Mueller report and how it blows out of the water like sitting ducks one anti-Trump media fantasy after another.  It won’t come as any surprise to anyone who’s been reading my newsletter for the past two years, but the really astounding thing about it is that it’s from the far-left magazine, The Nation!

All those Democrats who are still “bitterly clinging” to the “Russian collusion” delusion (California Rep. Eric Swalwell still refuses to face reality, and he wants us to make him President!  Talk about delusional!) should consider this yet another loud wake-up call.  When even The Nation is telling them, “It was all phony!  Face it!,” it’s time to move on.

And if The Nation’s cold bucket of reality doesn’t snap Congressional Democrats out of their “collusion/impeachment” fever dreams, maybe this will:

A new Washington Post poll found that among Americans, support for impeaching Trump has dropped to 37 percent.  That’s still ridiculously high, considering there are no grounds (nope, sorry: I don’t care what the Mueller report said he told people he wanted to do but didn’t.  Being ticked off over being falsely accused 24/7/365 of committing a treasonous act, but not doing anything about it that’s beyond your powers, is not a high crime or misdemeanor.)

I have a feeling that 37 percent are like the Democrats in Congress: they’ve been itching to impeach Trump since the second he won the election, and the grounds are immaterial.  If they could catch him recording a game without the express permission of Major League Baseball or ripping the label off his mattress, they’d impeach him for that.

Problem for Congressional Democrats is that those people are surely already Democratic voters.  For the good of the nation, I wish the Democrats would stop acting like spoiled children throwing a tantrum and work across the aisle to get things done for the good of America.  But if they insist on focusing on anti-Trump impeachment dreams to guarantee themselves 37% of the vote in the 2020 election, I’m not going to waste my time trying to reason them out of it.

Not to toot my own horn, but I predicted that once “Beto” O’Rourke was no longer the great Democratic hope to vanquish Ted Cruz and the liberals who had been showering him with money finally took a hard look at him, their support would curdle pretty quickly.  Looks as if he’s already approaching his sell-by date.

Your piece on changing the names of history reminded me of the fight here in Moab, Utah. A few years ago groups insisted we change the name of a camp site and hiking trail called "Nigger Bill". They at first wanted it's name to be"Negro Bill" I believe it was finally changed to William ***** which is the original person's name. Sorry, can't remember the last name. Makes me think, there surely are people with too much time on their hands.

Regarding the story of the minimum wage killing jobs, it is so true! There are several McDonalds' Restaurants that have gone to technology, which doesn't need benefits or $15.00/hr. wages, to replace people in their restaurants. My daughter-in-law is a Manager for a McDonalds Restaurant in Western NYS, and her restaurant is now undergoing technology updates which includes less personnel to take orders, just people to make the food and take to the counter for customers. Soon enough, robots will be able to make the food too. My daughter-in-law and my son are both hard-working tax payers, and have already lost their first-owned home due to tax burden and extreme high-cost of living, that they are renting again. And are still not any further ahead trying to raise a family, & pay their bills, etc. Other fast-food restaurants are also turning to technology instead of people to continue to stay open. Thanks to the unethical, stupid, and corrupted gov. of New York State, Cuomo, as he is oblivious to what he is doing to New York State, and how the heck he keeps winning gives pause for concern, like the words, 'our votes don't count, since we don't live in New York City'. It actually has been proven that is true, but no one can unearth this huge corruption because New York State is run by liberal lawyers who will squash any investigations against Cuomo. So, the only survival tactics New Yorkers can do is leave the state, and millions have..... and will soon. The minimum wage increases are once again the job-killing pieces that the Liberal Govt. officials like to see, as it puts more people into the welfare system of govt. assistance.... Socialism disguised as 'helping people'....but it is actually the opposite, as it is ruining people's lives, and hence the increase of drug use, violence, crime, etc. All the bad things that the Liberals LOVE to have happen, as they will blame it all on everyone else instead of looking in the mirror at the true reasons. More crime = more money for Liberal lawyers. The only ones making money from a doomed society, Liberal lawyers which go to college to learn how to lie, but make it sound like justice. Like that black woman from Rochester, New York, ex-judge Astascio, who committed felonies, but got away with it because she uses the legal system to her own advantage, and is a double minority, black and female, and is a Liberal, who knows how to work the system to her every advantage. Poor role model, but Liberals don't care about role models.

It's always strange how it's the bigots that scream loudest about bigotry. They praise antifa which behave just like the brownshirts of nazi Germany. They say the republicans embrace the KKK when the KKK is the child of the democratic party. Everything they are guilty of they say is the character of someone else. Maybe that's all they can see because that is what they are.

I'm so old, I remember when a person deciding to run for elected office
who was serious, resigned from the position (elected especially ) they held
to concentrate on the job they were running for. I say bring that idea
back! That would sort out the wanna-bes.

Where is the outrage about the cartoons? Their non-apology is ludicrous--gee, it was sent by some syndication, and was in poor judgement (in hind sight) to print it. Where were the editors whose job it would be, I would guess, to nix such cartoons before publishing? They should thank their lucky stars the Jewish community isn't like the terrorists who went on a killing spree against Charlie Hebdo and his publication for satirical cartoons about the Prophet Muhammad and Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. (Interesting note--President Obama actually used the word terrorist in this instance!)

I think any government entity (federal, state, local) and college administrations who cave in to people whining about historical figures should not be in positions of leadership. As is pointed out--how can you learn from history what was not a good thing, so as to not repeat those actions? It's kind of like those who are "offended" by reminders that the Holocaust DID occur, that 9/11 DID occur and cried that those reminders made them sad. And, yes, let's not talk about FDR, about the people of certain countries could not enter the US, or interment of Japanese AMERICANS. Those who bemoan about every muslim being looked at as a possible enemy should be glad that THEY weren't placed in interment camps.

Dear Mike, I always enjoy your comments because they are always the point blank truth. Me being an old white guy from Texarkana, AR like you, makes it hard from me to understand what these nut case liberals are thinking. What in the world is this place going to be in 20 years if the Dems take over?

As per getting rid of Prospector Pete: If these lunatics on the left decide to get rid of Laurel and Hardy, I will personally lead the Sons Of The Desert Laurel and Hardy Fan Club and we will storm the Capitol Building wearing Bowler hats! That will be another fine mess they've gotten themselves into!

Mistake per the NYT that supposed comic strip per Pres Trump and Israels Netanyahu as a dog and a NAZI sign was done because they wanted to do this? WHY now is the real question. How can Jewish New Yorkers accept this. No way it is even funny. Disgusting and very sad that a newspaper has to do this. Where have we gone in this day and age and all that is being said about racism and then put this in your paper for all to see. We see churches being attacked for all types of religion and now a newspaper puts in this supposed comic and now is apologizing again and again. OH NO! Apology not accepted .

Obviously, the Democrats want a new Constitutional standard for impeaching a president, "We didn't get our way!"
It will be listed as a 'high crime' because we all know Democrats have an absolute right to always get their way, so by denying them the White House, he OBSTRUCTED the Democrats. Plus he got Hillary's buds in Russia to support him with a few thousand in FB ads which REALLY changed everyone's mind. And being anti-Semitic is the new norm for Progressives since the 2018 elections. Makes me wonder when they'll find bottom.

God bless America and protect us from the evil that is trying to take over our country.
The term Love it or leave it should be made law. There are so many out there that hate this country even after all it has done for them. It flabbergasts me. I think if they hate it that bad, they need to leave.

Illegal immigrants shouldn't be eligible to receive Social Security Benefits even if they "paid in" unless they become citizens and learn English. This might be the incentive to get illegal entrants to change their bad behaviors of living. It shows those illegals entering America after them they face an uncertain future without the backing of old age social security. The road to real freedom won't come easy. Thanks for beefing up America's social security coffers from the expense of illegal activity. Aliens entering America are required to provide a needed skill and get labor certification by the U.S. Department of Labor. That's labor theory of value. No permanent visa is issued without it. Documentation is required for entry.

President Trump did not obstruct justice. There was no obstruction of justice. The Mueller report provides no evidence the President obstructed justice. The Mueller report wrongly and falsely provides as evidence Mueller's and his democratic team's attempt to read the President's mind, which is not evidence and cannot be evidence whoever tries to make it evidence. As well, Mueller's and his democratic team's attempt to read Trump's mind was clearly biased against the President. The President believed the Mueller investigation was a "witch hunt", knowing neither he nor his campaign colluded with Russians; as the President said many times. The Mueller investigation gave no consideration to what the President said many times, and no consideration to the President's strong suit, common sense. The Mueller investigation, reasonably believed by the President to be a witch hunt because there was no collusion by him or his campaign, caused the most false, most ugly, most destructive criticism of America and America's democracy; and I, "the common man" (actually common woman), were I president would want the Mueller investigation shut down on those grounds.

Dear Gov. Mike, Earlier in the evening I saw that you had an e-mail to me that asked...…"What is your take about the Measles Vaccine??" Just a short time ago I attempted to read your e-mail, but I could not find it in my "Today" listing of e-mails!! I have had a terrible time with my computer and being able to "get onto" the internet! I spent a goodly amount of money recently to get things straightened around so-to-speak, but I still have lots of problems! So, I often wish to tell you just how much I love to read your "take" on what is going on in the world, I too frequently have technical problems with me ol' computer.
I want, though, to mention a few thoughts about the Measles Vaccine! The so called M-M-R vaccine, which is still the one being used as was also used in "my time"---I practiced some 30 1/2 years in family medicine in Abingdon, IL. over near Galesburg, IL. and the majority of my adult life in Champaign-Urbana, IL. Mike, the Measles Vaccine IS TO BE RECOMMENDED....PERIOD!! In all the years that I gave little ones the M-M-R vaccine I did NOT HAVE ANY SIGNIFICANT PROBLEMS AT ALL!! I gave thousands of injections of this vaccine, and I would without hesitation recommend it to my own family without any concern about the vaccine being injurious to a child! I sincerely hope, Mike, that this may be somewhat helpful to you in your concern about the Measles Vaccine (the M-M-R vaccine).
Gov. Mike, I love to see you and hear you discuss any issue on the tv!! You would make a wonderful President of the United States!! DR. Bob Brunner in rural Urbana, Illinois

Love when you post the news that is mostly negative but add the news that brings tears of joy to hearts by good people as in your news about the Navy family who received the special van for the hero with a serious illness. The Bush 43 daughter and Jay Leno presenting Bush 41's van he used in last years of life to another Navy man. I watched the video and so glad I did. Thank you for news that seldom makes it in the liberal 'haters.'

I believe President Trump is doing his best to keep the promised that he ran on, and I appreciate that if the opposition was cooperating, even more would be accomplished sooner. I’m not seeing or hearing much about us forgotten seniors who have worked steadily for 50 plus years, Paid our Taxes, obeyed the rules & now being used as a cash cow for every fraction of each party, i waste much time opening ambigues looking letters that look official, only to find another BEG for$ using every deceptive phrase or intimidation to i get $
My time is more valuable as I have less of it to waste.
I find from my accountant, 2019 taxes have almost DOUBLED due to many deductions eliminated & the IRS is making Quarterly withdrawals automatically from my savings.
The BEGGARs ( BOTH PARTIES ) ARE trying to embarrass, cajole, intimidate, almost threaten in emails letters, &messages to a breaking point where I’m LOOSING CONFIDENCE.

As a high school teacher, I read "Brave New World" about 15 times! There are a lot of comparisons between the book and what progressives are currently doing to our culture. Is there really a difference between burning books and removing all "offensive" history from our history books?

I absolutely love your daily newsletters and humorous comments which can make me laugh when I sometimes feel like crying over today's unprecedented and hateful political climate. I cannot remember if I got this from one of your column or elsewhere, but this parody is funny and so absolutely true: "The Day Collusion Died" It is a parody of American Pie by Don Caron.
