How can we all be so connected, and our government be so disconnected?
One of the benefits of living in the 21st century is that thanks to jet travel and the Internet, I constantly talk to Americans from every state and every walk of life. And believe me, they are not shy about sharing their opinions. It gives me a perspective that I wish more of our politicians and media people inside the Beltway Bubble could experience.
If I had to explain their low approval ratings in one word, it would be “disconnection.” I don’t think there’s ever been a time when the people in government and the media were so out of touch with the people they’re supposed to be serving (as many of them learned to their shock on Election night, 2016.) They apparently really believed that when voters asked for “change,” they wanted bigger deficits and a bloated nanny state regulating the size of their sodas. Trust me, based on what they told me, they did not.

Programming note

This week, I’m giving my research, writing and tech staffers some time off from the headlines for the 4th of July vacation. But never fear, the newsletters will continue! I’ve prepared some non-topical commentaries that I hope you’ll enjoy. And our resident pop culture historian Pat Reeder has created a YouTube 4th of July Jukebox List of great but obscure songs related to patriotism and American history. There will be a new one in each mailing. Please check them out because I know you’ll get a kick out of hearing them.
Of course, if anything major does happen in the news, I’ll step back in and let you know about it. But with Congress safely out of Washington, just lean back and take a break with your family; enjoy the beaches, parks and picnics; and have fun watching some fireworks that are not of the political variety for a change.

Everyone loves Chuck Berry’s classic original that lists all the cool things we've got here in the USA, but I wanted to share this version, one of my favorite records of all time. Linda Ronstadt had the hit cover, but I always thought hers was too stiff and studio-bound. This version captures the all-American thrill of playing in a garage band with your friends on a sunny Saturday afternoon as hamburgers sizzle on the grill nearby. It’s so loose and spontaneous, you can hear Jonathan turning off-mic and directing the band as he goes along.
This is just over two minutes of pure, unadulterated joy at being a free American playing rock ‘n’ roll. If you can listen to this without smiling, I don’t want to know you.

"Hucktown"

There are a lot of people these days who think government should do everything for everyone (even illegal immigrants.) For many who are overworked and feeling burned out, that can be a very tempting offer. After all, personal responsibility is a lot of work!
But when you look at the staggering debt that’s threatening our grandchildren’s futures and wondering how that came to be, the answer is simple: a lack of personal responsibility. People thinking up things they thought the government ought to do and expecting them to be paid for with somebody else’s money. Thomas Jefferson said, “The government is best that governs least,” but small, cost-efficient government requires a population that’s willing and able largely to govern themselves.

##Appellation##, I wanted to make sure you also read these stories...
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez gave an example of how feminists support other women only if they agree with them politically by denigrating Ivanka Trump’s qualifications for being at the G-20 Summit. My daughter Sarah no longer works at the White House, but she couldn’t let an easy slowball like that go unswatted.

Piers Morgan also weighed in, outlining Ivanka Trump’s outstanding record of accomplishments compared to AOC’s two-line resume (“Bartender…Congress member.”)

Speaking of AOC, she finally went to the border to see a detainee camp, and that went about as well as you’d expect. FYI: Institutional plumbing fixtures that combine a sink on top with a toilet on the bottom do not mean you are “drinking out of a toilet.” Warning: Graphic content. I wish people would remember that when you have the facts and the law on your side, it’s best to stay with that and not descend to your opponents’ level of nasty fake memes and ugly personal attacks.

Fortunately, we do have some Congress members who see the crisis at the border for what it is, rather than as a backdrop for histrionic political theater.
I’ve asked this before, but to those who keep screaming about children being separated from their parents (or people who claim to be their parents) when they’re apprehended trying to enter the US illegally: Have there ever been any American citizens who were allowed to bring their kids to jail with them? And these camps aren’t even jails: the detainees came voluntarily and can go home. Since the Democrats are now insisting that this issue should be solved by making illegal entry legal, why not solve the problem of apprehended bank robbers being separated from their kids by making bank robbery legal? Considering all the other crimes “progressive” D.A.’s are making legal, that’s probably next.
Incidentally, here’s the latest brilliant legal reform from the People’s Republic of Austin. Note that the liberal pols don’t allow this behavior where they work, but it’s fine for it to go on where you live and work:
