Democrats who are attacking the Republican tax reform plans for giving income tax cuts to the rich but not the poor never mention the inconvenient fact that the poor don’t pay income taxes. However, if you’d like an example of a government program that truly punishes lower income Americans, look no further than Obamacare.

The individual mandate that forces people to buy health insurance or pay a penalty was declared to be a tax, when it was convenient to do that to sneak it past the Constitution. Well, Forbes writer Ryan Ellis did some research into who’s paying the Obamacare individual mandate surtax. The results were shocking.

Commentary continues below advertisement

According to the IRS, 6.7 million American families are forking over $3 billion a year to Washington for the privilege of not having to buy health insurance they don’t want and can’t afford. And 80 percent of those families make less than $50,000 a year. Ellis said this makes the Obamacare penalty “the most regressive tax we have on the books today.”

When Obamacare was first being sold to the public, Obama and the Democrats said that the penalty would only be paid by the rich, and the poor and middle class wouldn’t even be affected by it. But then, back then, they told us a lot of things, didn’t they?

So when Democrats claim the Republican tax reform does nothing to help the lower middle class, don’t believe it. It would help millions of them if it did nothing but repeal the Obamacare mandate.

    Dear Mike,
Yes, obamacare has punished and taxed the life out of the middle class! It has forced the private insurance companies to triple their premiums for the consumer, thus money we used to live on is no longer there. I am sorrily disappointed that we have so many democrats that have infiltrated the Republican Party that this Party will not keep its promise to repeal the obamacare tax! Maybe President Trump will find a way to make them 'see the light'.

You are so right! My husband and I are in the agriculture business. We never know what our yearly income will be due to changes in markets. Our income is usually well below 50,000 after deductions. One year it wasn't. We had high cattle prices. We also had signed up for Obamacare. We had to borrow the money to pay our penalties. So now no insurance. We use livestock medicine on ourselves and cast our own broken bones. Also paying the penalty because we can't afford insurance. I know we are not the only ones that do this.

You are so correct. It was disingenuous for the Obama Administration and government to press that onto a populace that are struggling to get full time jobs so they can have healthcare because most companies are hiring part time to bypass employee health benefits. If Congress and the Senate could get rid of the Soros paid politicians and the infiltration of traitors coming into the Republican Party who are actually Democratic (example Ohio politician, married, just caught with a man). Said he was against LGBT but his actions are in line with their calling card.

The influx of LGBT conservatives have me concerned because most conservatives are Christian. The Supreme Cort should never have allowed sodomy or SSM. So how are Conservative Christians ever suppose to believe in a government that lies and gets away with murder, money laundering, sex trafficking, selling our Uranium, giving guns to terrorist enemies. Everything in Obama’s Administration has proven that our government cannot be trusted.

We accepted the mandate because I did not trust Obama or his people. Government is too big. How do public servants sent to Washington become multibillionaires who lie before the Oversight Committee, lie to Americans and spend our tax dollars for their own benefit. They were not supposed to touch Medicare, but they did. I watched Greenspan on C-Span in 2006-2007 to not open that black box, but they raided our retirement. Now what we should have gotten has been reduced to the last ten years of your life, when most who made under 50K began to make less. The housing market collapsed, pensions were stolen and Americans are suppose to just take it.

We cannot afford to get out and protest. We have bills to pay and money does not fall from trees. Sorry about getting off Health Care but we have to have more politicians who are honest and care about why our ancestors fought, and sacrificed for this nation. It was not so we could be selling children on the black market to wealthy perverts.

My husband served others his entire working life, starting at DQ when he was 13, he went on to serve as a fireman, EMT, deputy sheriff, city peace officer, prison chaplain, and finally the visionary evangelist of a ministry that fed 30,000 + people a month in southeast New Mexico, provided showers and laundry services for the homeless, helping many hundreds of people to get work and housing and get off the street, and led many hundreds to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. When my beloved needed health care with a diagnosis of pneumonia, the ER doctor determined that as tax paying American citizens, we would not be able to afford the care he needed since we were unable to afford traditional insurance other than Obamacare, but we could not in good conscience sign up for something that paid for and promoted abortion. We were sent home with oral antibiotics. Shortly after returning home he started throwing up blood. When we went back to the ER the doctor pulled out all the stops to save a man already in sepsis, even starting his heart three times during his life flight to a bigger hospital after the lab work showed he was already dead. The cost of this capricious insanity was $97,000. Still in shock and grieving that Obamacare codified a culture of death that literally killed my husband, I am currently trying to figure out how to pay the penalties assessed by the IRS for our not being able to afford insurance. (We had signed up for a Christian healthcare cost sharing program but did not report that at the hospital because we had not yet received confirmation of coverage and did not want to misrepresent our health coverage status.) The medical bills were paid but I am left to grieve the loss of my beloved who had worked his entire life to help others but was denied help when he needed it.

My college degree is in Social Work and that group is what we already called the "working poor" back the the 90s. What a disgrace that the elites in the previous Washington establishment pulled this wool over on the unsuspecting poor that the Democrats have always claimed to represent. I don't Hate anyone, but I sure did not like what I saw happening to our Country from 2008-2016. I'm sure anyone who reads this comment understands exactly where I place the blame, at the foot of the infamous "the buck stops here" guy. Unfortunately, he meant your buck ($), not the proverbial one.

Governor Huckabee, Thank you for bringing this to my attention. Has this information been given to the rest of the media, like FOX News, and if so how are they handling it. If more people know about perhaps they will really pressure congress to do something about it.

I am 57 years young and am on disability. I receive $947.00 per month. When Obama care first came out, I did not qualify because I didn't make enough money. At the time I did not yet qualify for Medicare or Medicaid. I was still penalized $150.00 for not having insurance. That is ridiculous! Why or how could I be penalized when I didn't even qualify? Thank you Mr Huckabee for your newsletter. It is informative and entertaining. The unbiased truth is so refreshing. God bless you!

I have Affordable Health Care and I make in the $45,000 range. We are not paying more than we can afford. The politicians who are against Affordable Health Care need to state ALL of the facts not just the negative ones. Also, the Republicans have yet to come up with anything to replace it!

The tax seams more of a expense for more household's that really are not benefiting from it, when the cost of their coverage includes a initial base of so many dollars, before the coverage will pay the rest above the initial fee required, So some are not getting the medical treatment needed because they still cannot afford it with in their Budget's ! So whom really Benefit's from it ? Not the public tax payer!
