Greenland update

President Trump apparently wasn’t kidding about the US considering buying Greenland from Denmark (Greenland is an autonomous Danish territory that’s vital to US defense interests because of its location near the North Pole and between North America and Russia.  There are also concerns about China wanting to put three air bases there.)

When Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen dismissed the idea as “absurd,” Trump canceled his planned trip to Denmark two weeks from now. He said, "The Prime Minister was able to save a great deal of expense and effort for both the United States and Denmark by being so direct. I thank her for that and look forward to rescheduling sometime in the future!"

(I love the way he phrased blowing off the Danish Prime Minister in such complimentary terms.  I’m also relieved that he didn’t praise the Danish people as “great, great Danes.”)

The announcement caught politicians, pundits, and Danish officials off-guard since they assumed there was more to the visit than discussing buying Greenland.  But Trump is, after all, a real estate guy, and if you refuse to deal, he’ll walk away from the table and let you think for a while about what you're passing up.

And for the record: before you buy any claims that no other President has ever been so crazy and unstable as to come up with the wacky idea of buying Greenland, you should know that shortly after World War II, Democratic icon Harry S. Truman offered to buy Greenland for $100 million.  Denmark turned him down, too, but then, he hadn’t read “The Art of the Deal.”

Didn't we "buy" Alaska? And The Louisiana Territory? 'Seems like that worked out pretty well.
