Today's Edition: 6 minute read

Former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper dropped out of the race Thursday, his chances of winning having been crippled by a toxic level of rationality. He’s considering running for Senate in Colorado. This will leave several other candidates with no shot to battle for the less-than-one-percent of voters in the polls who favor a moderate and realistic candidate over a far-left dingbat.

This somehow reminds me of “Beto” O’Rourke, who “rebooted” his campaign this week with a speech that was aptly described by one critic as “woke word salad.” “Beto 3.0” followed up a week of hysterically calling President Trump a white supremacist who’s personally responsible for mass shootings (and anyone who votes for him a racist) by refocusing his campaign on "racism, white supremacy and guns" (sounds like a winner!) and making it a personal moral crusade against Trump.

He simultaneously managed to alienate all Republicans while ticking off many Democrats by dismissing the idea of dropping out and running for Senate in Texas. He implied that replacing Trump was so important that the Senate was nothing compared to that. That isn’t a message Democrats want to spread since if they hold the House and win the White House, a GOP Senate will be the only thing keeping them from going full socialist/open borders/gun-grabber on us all. Personally, I hope Democrats don’t get that message, but I also hope Republicans get it loud and clear.

Interesting dispatch from the trade war with China

By Mike Huckabee

President Trump has removed a list of items made in China from being subject to the upcoming 10% tariffs because they are too important.  The items include child car safety seats, shipping containers, cranes used in ports and construction…and Bibles. The link below explains why most Bibles are printed in China instead of America.

If we’re going to depend on China to print most of our Bibles, someone had better be proofreading them carefully.  As this report from last January reveals, the Chinese government has been alarmed by the growth in Christianity in China (approximately 60 million believers – that they know of) and fear that people of faith will stand up against the unjust actions of the atheist communist government.  So they’ve been waging brutal crackdowns on churches, imposing strict regulations, barring the distribution of Bibles in Chinese online and even – yes – rewriting Scripture.  A chilling quote from the story:

“One of the goals of a government work plan for ‘promoting Chinese Christianity’ between 2018 and 2022 is ‘thought reform.’ The plan calls for ‘retranslating and annotating’ the Bible, to find commonalities with socialism and establish a ‘correct understanding’ of the text.”

One of the hallmarks of socialism and communism worldwide and throughout the ages is giving a noble-sounding name to something that’s actually the opposite of what’s happening.  Note that “promoting Chinese Christianity” means oppressing it and forcing it under the boot heel of the government, while a “correct understanding” of the text means rewriting the Bible to make it seem to support government practices that it clearly doesn’t or else Beijing wouldn’t be so afraid of real Christians.

Also note from the story that the way they justify this kind of blasphemy, censorship, and oppression is by labeling people who trust in the Word of God rather than the government as “extremists.”  Gee, why does that sound so familiar?

Tlaib, Omar and Israel

By Mike Huckabee

The reaction on the left to Israel barring a visit by Reps. Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib was the usual, predictable feigned outrage that seeks to obscure reality: they blasted the Israeli government as intolerant and bigoted against the “only female Muslim member of Congress,” as if that were the reason for the ban.

Reality check: there are many, many Muslims, females and Muslim females in Israel.  They are welcome to live there and to visit there.  Omar and Tlaib might also have been welcome to visit – indeed, it might have been a highly enlightening experience for them – if it had been a genuine “fact-finding” trip.  But as noted here yesterday, the Israeli government learned at the last minute what they had planned for their itinerary.  Far from coming to learn facts that might dispel their anti-Semitic prejudices, they planned to exploit their appearance in Israel to appear with Palestinian officials, call Israel “Palestine” in an attempt to deny its legitimacy, gin up general unrest and promote the BDS movement.  Israel has a legal right to refuse entry to foreigners who do that, and they invoked it.

But then, just as all the phony indignation against Israel was reaching fever pitch, Prime Minister Netanyahu upended the leftist narrative by gracefully granting Rep. Tlaib’s humanitarian request to visit her grandmother in the West Bank, after she pledged not to promote the BDS movement.  See what can happen when you act like a reasonable adult?

Ironically, as the first article above notes, many of the same liberals who are voicing “OUTRAGE!!” (I wonder, don’t leftists ever get sore throats from voicing outrage all the time?) about Omar and Tlaib being banned from Israel have repeatedly called for President Trump to be banned from visiting a number of places, such as New York City and El Paso just last weekend, and cheered those in other nations, such as the UK and Ireland, who called for banning Trump from visiting them.

Every nation has the right to refuse entry to undesirables who just intend to cause trouble.  Judging from their recent stances on immigration law, I get that many prominent Democrat politicians no longer understand that concept, but the Israelis do.

UPDATE: Tlaib has turned down Israel's offer.

If you despair of partisan rancor preventing anything from ever getting done in Washington, here’s a video that might help lift your spirits.  It’s a list of 10 major pieces of legislation that actually got heavy bipartisan support over the past two years and were signed into law by President Trump. The bills cover a range of subjects, from reducing medical costs to helping veterans.

One caveat: you might notice that almost all of these bipartisan bills passed before the Democrats took over the House this year.  When Republicans ran both Houses of Congress, bills were passed that Democrats supported.  Since Democrats took over the House, actual legislating has taken a backseat to endless investigating, trying to impeach Trump, dividing Americans, never-gonna-pass radical bills like the “Green New Deal” and partisan and inter-party warfare.

It’s been said that voters like divided government because they like gridlock since it prevents either party from going too far.  But putting Democrats in charge of the House creates a kind of gridlock ensures that literally, nothing worthwhile is ever going anywhere.

A former investigative analyst with the law enforcement arm of the IRS pleaded guilty this week to leaking confidential IRS information on former Trump attorney Michael Cohen to sleazy porn lawyer Michael Avenatti.

I know it’s tempting to think, “Who cares if one sleazy, unethical lawyer gets dirt on another sleazy, unethical lawyer?”  It’s like the old joke, “What do you call a thousand lawyers on the bottom of the ocean?  ‘A good start.’”  But don’t let cynicism or weariness with the left's endless “get dirt on Trump at any cost” crusade obscure the important point here.  This is a dead-serious abuse of power that undermines trust in the entire IRS system.

John C. Fry of the law enforcement arm of the IRS twice went into IRS computers, removed confidential taxpayer information on a US citizen, and illegally leaked it to a person of bad repute with a political vendetta against the President, who released it on Twitter.  That’s not a veiled accusation from some partisan conspiracy website: the agent pleaded guilty after being identified in an investigation by the Treasury Department Inspector General.

The US Attorney for the Northern District of California said in a statement, “Fry was given access to sensitive and powerful government databases including people’s most private financial information and he was given that access to do his job as an investigative analyst.  He decided his politics were more important than his obligation to follow the law. In that, he was mistaken.”

(I would add that in that, he was hardly alone.)

Fry is facing a maximum of five years behind bars and up to $250,000 in fines.  It’s a hopeful sign that an IG investigation has finally resulted in identifying and holding accountable a political partisan in the government who committed an egregious breach of the public trust.  May it be only the first of many, which it needs to be if the government is ever going to restore the public’s faith that their private data on file in Washington is safe, federal agencies are impartial and law-abiding, and guilty people are held to account, no matter how well-connected they may be in Washington.

Tweet of the Day!  Ben Shapiro reminded Joe Biden that, once again, he’s standing high on principle to take a firm moral stand against something the Obama/Biden Administration once did itself.

LOL! When did we begin 'trusting' the IRS again? Lois Lerner EVER brought to justice, or any of her IRS cronies? I'm thinking she is continuing to drink margaritas in some exotic locale at taxpayer's expense!

    Dear Governor,
Ok.....with this column...I remembered to take my blood pressure med.
I saw the reasoning given by the largest Christian Bible are absolutely correct that anything printed in China....but ESPECIALLY a Christian Bible....better have a very good proof-reader in the USA....and someone who actually CHECKS all editions for accuracy. And...that would be impossible!

What angers me is this: In the local small city here, there is a paper production company that for eons has made high quality paper and was for many generations the backbone industry in that city.
But now? No! They are down from many....modernized ONE machine! the machines were pulled from service, the buildings were also destroyed....and many jobs LOST.
The company was founded in became the property of UPM-Kymmene in October of 1997....and it is a subsidiary of UPM-Kymmene North America....which is basically owned and operated by FINLAND!

There is absolutely no reason why companies such as this could not have invested in the community, changed production to incorporate whatever type of paper is required. But a foreign entity owner has absolutely zero interest in doing this! Why is that? Was the purchase and ownership basically a "tax writeoff" in their home country?

Perhaps our government should reconsider foreign investment and ownership in the United States; buy back some of these companies; invest in modernizing and building them up....and providing the jobs HERE for American workers.

I realize nothing can last forever, but from 1997 to now....all this has happened and with responsible ownership and (perhaps governmental) investment in our own USA-owned industries, perhaps this would NOT currently be taking place here! And WE could provide the material necessary for those bibles--and--there is no shortage of wood for paper either!

I know no one can control Trumps tweets, but why would he think that it would be OK to bring family into it. " The one good thing is that her grandmother doesn't have to see her. " He has no idea how the grandmother feels. Of course she will side with her granddaughter. I love what he is doing for the country, but he makes it hard to stand up for home when he acts so childish.

Gee, how is this any different than those who rewrite scripture to an "easier" to understand version? And oh, while we are at it, let's leave out a few of those pesky verses like Acts 8:37 so we can change the doctrine of salvation by faith in Christ to salvation by baptism? Satan is oh so subtle in his attempts to undermine Christ's sacrificial death, whether it is by government oppression or by well-meaning people who just want to make things easier. Didn't the serpent change God's words "just a little" when tempting Eve?
