November 10, 2017

Alabama GOP Senate candidate and former Judge Roy Moore has issued a response to an article in the Washington Post, accusing him of having sexual contact with a then-14-year-old girl, 38 years ago when he was 32. The woman never filed a police report or made any public accusations against Moore in any of his previous campaigns. The paper cited claims by other women that Moore asked them out or kissed them back in the 1970s when they were age 16 to 18, but the age of consent was 16. Moore flatly denies the Washington Post article, calling it “completely false and a desperate political attack.” If so, it would not be the first time WaPo has published false or misleading hit pieces on Moore.

President Trump and a number of top Republicans called on Moore to drop out of the race if there’s any truth to the allegations. That would leave the GOP in a bad spot, since their Senate majority is razor-thin now, and the law says it’s too late to change the ballot. Democrats would likely fight a lawsuit to change the ballot, even though they did the same thing to keep a seat in New Jersey when one of their elderly incumbents died near Election Day.

Full disclosure: I endorsed Judge Moore, because I believe we need more people in Washington who are willing to stand up to the do-nothing, go-along establishment and not betray conservative principles or their constituents. Nevertheless, if this accusation is true, then it is disturbing and unacceptable, and I agree that he should step down.

However, in America, one of our bedrock principles is the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. In the wake of recent Obama college directives and the wave of accusations in the media following the Harvey Weinstein scandal, the right to due process regarding sexual conduct has been thrown out the window. There is a middle ground between ignoring or smearing accusers and accepting trial by media and de facto conviction without evidence.

Commentary continues below advertisement

The decision on whether to stay in the race is Judge Moore’s, and I call on him to make it with honesty and integrity. If he stays in, sans a trial or evidence, the ultimate decision on whether last-minute media accusations should determine elections will come next month from Alabama voters.

It is so pathetic that we live in a society where someone is prejudged and convicted in an alleged abuse, without any proof, other than another persons word, regarding something that took place decades ago.
Why is the accusers word more reliable then the accused.
I am so fed up with the Republicans throwing their fellow Republicans "under the bus", just to supposedly protect their own political future. Republicans GET SOME GUTS and STAND UP FOR WHAT IS RIGHT!
I think the halls of congress would be empty.

I wonder how much those accusers got paid in cash or kind, even if they denied it. They are not angels's should, their morals or past is not ver clean!. Of course, not proven! neither the veracity of the accusation.

After reading the comments to your article - it suddenly occurred to me the case of Clarence Thomas. How a single woman was able to accuse one of our great conservative justices of leaving a pubic hair on a can of coke - and that this disqualified him from consideration. This is classic Democratic playbook ...we've seen it over and over again. Wow. If it weren't for Justice Thomas, we could say goodbye to our Second Amendment and freedoms we enjoy now.

The story of the 14 year old girl was disputed by her own mother - - the girl said she talked with Moore on a bedroom phone but her mother said she didn't have a bedroom phone. I think lie detector tests are called for by her and the other accusers.

I agree with you. I think the more liberal conservatives and the Democrats don't want another Trump type guy in office. I also think the democrat are 'gunning' for the spot in the senate. That my 2 cents.

You think a 32 yr old single man who dated a 14 yr old single girl (who probably looked 20), and did not rape her or even have sex with her, should step down if it proves true that he dated her, and perhaps tried to make out with her? Since then he has had 38 yrs of good record.
Let he who is innocent throw the first stone.

I believe there are many people who know Mr. Moore's character, and that it is honorable
Much more people know the lack of honesty and Christian values of his demoncrat accusers.
I definitively trust Mr. Moore like a 100% versus 5 % of his accusers.

A lot of people are saying Mr. Moore is not fit to fill the position he is running for, even though he hasn't been found guilty of anything; but Al Franken is clearly guilty, so shouldn't he be held to the same standard? I am so sick of the double standard in this country.

The women claiming that Judge Moore made sexual advances to them are hiding under Gloria Allred's skirt. She loves the limelight but is
being real quiet this time around.] So what's up? Why aren't these women speaking out? is it because she know's it's fake news? The accusers of Al Franken are standing tall and all alone to give their stories. They sound pretty convincing to me
and their is proof of what he did. So where is the proof Judge Moore did anything wrong? The voices are getting
    weaker and far away.

Remember Potiphar's wife and Joseph in Genesis 29! As a woman who has lived all over the country, I have met many women who lied or misunderstood actions from men and from other women like me. There is a reason one of God's commandments is "Do not bear false witness against your neighbor." God knew it was one of the main ways people hurt each other.

    11/16/2017 05:04 PM

Governor Huckabee, I have always respected you and first heard you when you were running for President and spoke at the University of Maryland in College Park. I like what I heard and like what I hear now. I frankly do not believe the accusers and I don't think the evidence or their characters support their charges. Also the double standard of the liberals is breathtaking! (Remember Bill Clinton and a host of others.) How would sitting members of Congress like to be in Judge Roy Moore's boots where their record is examined from 40 years back and accusations are spread all over the liberal media and by "establishment" Republicans in an attempt to undermine his candidacy? I am sure that there is more indiscretion by those in positions of power than most of realize and we need to keep that in mind. No double standards and no last-minute smear campaigns to undermine a good candidate. I believe the Judge based on his track record of proven character and standing for principle above a job or career. His wife believes him. The weight of the evidence is on the side of his integrity. Mitch McConnell and others aligned with him have already spent $30 million in ads to take Moore out of the Primary. And they supported a very questionable candidate with a very questionable way of receiving the fill-in appointment for the Senate seat vacated by Attorney General, Jeff Sessions. I believe Jeff Sessions is another very honorable man who has taken and continues to take a lot of heat because he feels bound by law and does not bow to the pressure of those who are in authority or those who try to stampede public opinion to achieve their own ends. Thank you for reading what I have written and for being an honorable man yourself. We need many more like you, Jeff Sessions, and Judge Roy Moore. God bless you, sir! The following is something I have already posted elsewhere but it captures my thoughts.

Judge Roy Moore is an honorable man who has suffered much persecution because of his steadfastness to his Christian convictions, our Constitution, and the rule of law. I am praying fervently that God exposes these lies and the people of Alabama support this fine candidate, electing him to the U.S. Senate. The actions leveled against him, if allowed to stand, will signal the end of the possibility of conservative Christian candidates of principle being elected to high office in this country. Our freedoms will be lost and we all will suffer.

I encourage both Christians, conservatives, and people of good faith and character to unite behind this man and give him the prayers and financial support he needs to win as well as pray for his dear family. Although I do not even live in Alabama, what has been going on in these unfair accusations have angered me to the point where I have doubled my previous financial contributions to his candidacy. (So far in this election cycle he is the only candidate I have supported financially.) We need him as a steadfast light and anchor in the United States Senate to support Senator Ted Cruz and others with steadfast integrity and uncompromising conservative principles. I hope others will join with me in supporting this man even sacrificially as I have done.

This is just one more trick from the Democrats and Mitch McConnell to hinder Judge Moore's election. I do not believe these accusations and even if true, that was when this man was 32, many years ago. Stay in there Judge Moore and let Alabama decide by the vote! If God be for us, who can be against us???

    11/16/2017 12:28 PM

I do not believe that Judge Roy Moore is guilty of these accusations! This is all just a strategy to destroy him and to get another Democrat in the works. The swamp does not want to be drained and evidently they don't want any FRESH WATER in their either.

  • Adele Eldridge

    11/16/2017 11:33 AM

My own thoughts have been that if I were falsely accused of something that was to have such a huge impact in so many areas, I would volunteer to take a lie detector test to end the matter once and for all. I know this sounds drastic, but with life in politics these days, drStic is the name of the game..I want Moore to be seems sexual allegations are running rampant these days as a way to smear any and everyone...what ever happened to integrity?

  • Neil Wilson

    11/15/2017 11:40 PM

I agree this smells of a scheme to undermine Moore. I agree, if he's guilty indeed and it's proven in a court of law, Moore should step down. But when the law puts the age of consent at 16, there's really nothing there, though a 30 year man really should be thinking about why is he dating a 16 year old girl. Most people do find that repulsive. I also believe that there are holes in the lady's story who is alleging him of sexual assault. For instance, electronic car lock doors were not present in most cars in 1977. You generally had to access the lock from that door itself. I have a feeling we will find that the car he had didn't have a child proof lock.

Never, not once, in my life did I ever need to ask a mother permission to date her daughter. Never. Know why? I only date adults. And I don't "generally" date adults. I ONLY have ever dated adults. Roy Moore is a sex pervert. Keep the pages far away from him. I am not even sure we should risk having pages if he is in the Senate.

  • Sandra Hackworth

    11/15/2017 04:50 PM

Maybe Judge Moore is 100% guilty as alleged, maybe not. The fact that these women came forward one month prior to the election, however, has the stench of a liberal hit-job. Where have these women been been for the past 38 years? We have seen democrats use this same dirty trick before. If they continue to get by with slinging sex allegations every time a conservative is ahead in the polls, then republicans need not bother running for office at all. I'm all for "Innocent until PROVEN guilty". Hang in there, Judge Moore. I hope I'm not disappointed.

Judge Moore should not step down under any circumstances. If he does so, he will put a pro-abortion, pro-gay marriage liberal in office. Those two sins are more odious than anything Judge Moore is accused of, and he is almost alone, as an office holder, in clearly and boldly standing against them. I appreciate all you may do in Judge Moore's behalf. Please try and expose the views of his left-wing opponent. Thanks.

I am saddened/broken-hearted that these women are accusing Roy Moore one month before the Dec. 12 election. Why did they not come out prior to the run-off election between Luther Strange & Roy Moore if it is true! That way we could have chosen between two Republicans. Now, we have to choose between a Republican and a Democrat!!! Surrre smeeels fissshy!!!!! If you lived in Alabama, I would write in your name for Alabama Senator! I voted for you to become President Huckabee (was it 2008?).

I don,t buy any smear of the Fake Newspapers. I was molested at age 14 by a doctor. I don't know when attorney and insist on confront him face to face and sniiffle on TV like the woman accusing Judge Moore. I think that this is a ruse by the press to destroy a strong conservative and the stupid Senators and others should wait and not make a judgment quite yet because they may be the next to get the ax.

  • Georgie DuPriest

    11/14/2017 06:33 PM

This is definitely more FAKE NEWS instigated by the democrats! After 30 - 40 years how in the world did theses women SUDDENLY REMEMBER and TELL something that was so obviously un-memorable for so long if any of it even happened. Maybe $$$$$ changing hands?
And to those republicans asking Judge Moore to resign remember you too live in glass houses and stone are flying all the time. Maybe you will be the next target.
I'm trying very hard to remember that time Mitch McConnell tried to get me into bed with him. Had to be 55 years ago since I've been married for 54 years

Waiting 38 years to accuse a man of a crime is horrible. Waiting 38 years and making your accusations one month before an election he is winning gives the appearance that there is no truth, but only an attack on a political candidate to destroy him. If I were in Alabama, until someone gave me convincing evidence that Judge Roy Moore is guilty, I'd cast my vote FOR JUDGE ROY MOORE FOR SENATOR !

  • Tommy

    11/13/2017 11:30 PM

I believe the Roy Moore piece is a political hatchet job by the liberal Washington Post and the legal prostitute, Gloria Allred.
We have seen her roll out these accusers over and over in every important election that the democ(rats ) can't win.
We saw it with Herman Cain and once he dropped out there was never anything else that was reported about it.
We saw it with Donald Trump and when he pushed back they backed down and we didn't hear any more about it.
If this keeps up we will have nothing but the bottom of the barrel running for our public offices, which is close to where we are now with both democ(rats) and establishment republicans.
You were our first choice in both elections you ran in.

  • Robert Magill

    11/13/2017 01:06 PM

    1) there is no evidence to confirm either side of this "he said...she said." If candidate Moore wants to provide some evidence of his innocence, or the accuser of her claim, they should offer to do a polygraph test and release the results.

    2) Has WaPo done a serious dirt digging investigation on Moore's opponent? "Equal time?" I suspect that the dirt was dug on only one side of the street and that someone, somewhere, would turn up very negative things about the opponent if the work was done. the only reason WaPo went to work on this guy (including making numerous requests of persons who did not want to talk to them), is because WaPo does not like the man's politics. If he had been a "progressive" -- all of this would have been ignored or not even discovered.

    3) I believe, that since we are all sinners, that there is dirt on EVERY candidate for office --- just not vigorously pursued as the WaPo has here. If the same kind of "investigations" were done on every candidate , we would find a big surprise: there are no saints running for office.

    4) Thus, since we all have made mistakes in the past, what Moore did or did not do 30 some years ago is, imho, irrelevant. It matters not if he did, in fact, do what he has been accused of. More relevant is what has his life been for the past 30 years --- does he have good principles and evidenced the spine to follow them? Does it appear that he will use those principles if he obtains office? Will he vote for things that are good for the country as a whole?

When Judge Roy Moore was elected as the Alabama State Judge and also as the president of the Foundation for Moral Law, why did these accusations not come up then? In all the official offices that he has held nothing was ever mentioned concerning these types of accusations. He has always been strongly against homosexuality, and his belief in Christianity as the only true religion. He was removed from his position as Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court for refusing to remove a monument of the Ten Commandments commissioned by him from the Alabama Judicial Building in 2003. Moore was again elected Chief Justice in 2013, but was suspended in May 2016, for directing probate judges to continue to enforce the state's ban on same-sex marriage. The liberals are willing to lie or entice other people to lie, in order to keep him from becoming a U. S. Senator, because he would be a true conservative and the liberals will lie cheat or anything else to keep him from being elected.

A friend and I were talking about this yesterday about the allegation against Mr. Moore. She and I believe this woman should have told her parents if there was any truth to it! Why accuse now! We decided, if either one of us wanted to do such a thing, we could just name anyone today we wanted to. Weinstein - yes, but say Mr. Moore did this 38 years ago is just wild! I am tired of allegations that there is nothing to. Let’s get the people of this country back on the same page and move in the right direction and stop all the distractions! Mr. Moore will do the right thing if this has any basis to it!

This tactic has been used so often that there's no way to tell if it's real or fake. It's time to revive the story, "The Boy Who Cried Wolf"! Everyone who accused the President disappeared as did everyone who attacked Herman Cain! Over 35 years is too long to be silent, especially when someone has been in the public view for a long time. It's wrong to use accusations like bribes and conveniently time them to do the most damage. It's outrageous! I don't condone any abuse but I also don't condone these conveniently timed stories either. Furthermore, memories morph over time. Any one with kid's knows this. And usually, they morph in twisted ways. Real proof please.

I pray that Roy Moore stays in running for the Senate. I wonder how many of those that want him to withdraw his name would do the
same if the news was about them instead of Roy Moore. I wonder where her mother or who was watching over her at 14 was at the
time she said, this happened. If this happen and Mr. Moore has repented and became a born again Christian, this is all has been forgiven
and not to be remember no more by the one that counts, and that is God.
Bill Clinton did not get out of office after been found guilty, and impeached, and the democrat's or republicans did not ask him to leave, and how can he say another person should withdraw," it must be don't do as I do" ," but do as I say."
Did these girls come out on their own or was they found by the Washington Post???? The Bible states, he that is without sin, let them cast the first stone.
    first stone.

Dear Mike, Thank you for your continued support of Judge Moore. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know this whole thing is a set-up!!!! These are the tactics used by the DNC as seen in the past so many times. It would seem also that those in Congress who are trying to denigrate Judge Roy Moore are part of the "swamp creature elites". We need to take note of these folks and remember it when election time rolls around again. I have sent my monetary support directly to Judge Moore. Because the NRC uses monies for more elitists who add to the "swamp" I refuse to send any financial support to them. I choose to support my choices directly. Thank you again for your comments.
Also, just a side note: Doug Jones is for abortion up to time of birth.

Just heard on the radio that the last governor of VA gave the prisoners in that state the right to vote in the last election. 200,000 prisoners given the right to vote just so they could vote democrat. Added to the immigrants there, and you can easily see why the Democrats won the race. My sister lives in VA and the "citizens", not criminals, are much more republican but as with the pockets on the coast, east and west, these ignorant people drink the koolaide and have so many votes that it all goes wrong. If this was true about the judge, it would have already come out in the primaries. That is when all the mud slings. The timing of this stunt is very suspicious and I for one see it as just that. A last ditch by the dems to get another radical, Obama Chicago mob mentality back in the swamp.

I don’t believe these women or the WaPo. The timing is very suspect. In addition, the women are suspect. One is a supporter of the democrat and very active in the democrat party with a visceral hatred of Trump and his agenda. The former ‘14 year old’ is highly suspect as well. She has been divorced 3 times, declared bankruptcy 3 times, and is alleged to have threatened several pastors with accusations of sexual impropriety if they did not pay her $ according to one source, but I don’t know if that’s true. The timing is also questionable in that the article came out at 12:52 and major establishment Republicans and Democrats had begun to denounce Judge Moore by 1:08. That looks like collusion. The arc of the story is another flaw. It conflates an illegal crime with lawful relationships in order to exacerbate the seriousness of the offense, which is dishonest reporting. In addition, I read a co-author of the story has been arrested for writing hot checks which is not much of a character endorsement. My prayer is that which is done in secret will be brought to light and the truth will be made known abroad, whether it is bribery, pay offs, Soros media, etc. I will bet the roaches we see scrambling won’t be Judge Moore when that light is turned on.

Judge Roy, If you say you're innocent, I believe you. I've been keeping up with you for many years and I believe this to all be a political lie on the other side.
Besides, nothing is going to get done in the senate during this Presidrnts term because he doesn't fit in to their political equation. I say this Senate; there's just enough against the President to keep them from passing anything. Judge Roy, you would be good for this Senate and could maybe embarrass some of the bad apples to just get out.
You say you're innocent, then STAY THE COURSE.

The Republicans and FOX has had members of these type of accusations thrown at them by the liberal press and liberal Democrats in particular. Very suspicious that claims would be made at this point in his career. The Democrats just don't want the Republicans to take most of the seats in Congress. Everyone that is accused should do what Sean did and that is to take them to court for defaming them. Also take the liberal media with them. The lies have to stop for the benefit of this country.

  • Lawrence M Martindale

    11/12/2017 04:31 PM

I believe that you are quite right sir. It seems that there is a wave of reports in the recent media coverage over the last few weeks of various accusations against people for sexual misconduct with out any proof. Maybe some or none or all of it is true. It always seems to me that the timing of such serious accusations for political figures such as Judge Moore before an election is more than suspect.

It also seems to me that this would be an easy politcal weapon to use against a political adversary and I read in media reports that the source of this accusation is from a Hillary Clinton staffer. Just how much of that is true who knows, just like any such accusation thrown up on a news agency's web site. All of it is accusation but no one seems to be able to substantiate any of it with any credible evidence. All a political enemy has to do with a willing media is put out that some one did some evil and the damage is instantly done as the media (mostly liberal) runs with it. I am disappointed that no one but you seems to remotely challenge the left's assertion regarding Judge Moore's case. I've always understood Judge Moore to be an honorable man. It seems so easy for someone to put a vague sexual allegation out that about something that allegedly happened 40 years ago. The accuser never said anything in previous elections for Judge Moore until now before the biggest election of his life. There is no way to prove anything from an accusation like this. It also seems that there is no way to defend yourself of an accusation like this once it is published. The media and perhaps a willing public seem eager to swallow this without due process. Once such an accusation is made it becomes fact. LIberals, of course, love it. Republicans, more and more it seems, seem to be siding with the liberals against Moore.

The Democratic line does not surprise me. It is very disappointing to me and curious, however, that Republicans would so easily turn on their own without established facts.

I thank you for your article. You are the only voice of good judgement that I have read or heard on this matter so far.

Am I the only one who is wondering about the "timing" of this allegation?....seems like accusations of sexual misconduct are coming from all directions these days, but THIS one? There's something rotten in Denmark...

Judge Moore please do not step down! You are innocent until proven guilty according to our system of government. Good luck in the special election!

I’m so uncomfortable that the Democratic Party continue this malicious attack against their opponents. Allegations against Mr Moore date decades back makes one question the accusers timing of these accusations. Mr Moore has a record of approval to do the job needed for our country and in support of our President.
Democrats are in a heck of a position. Party split, envolement in sexually allegations have always ran radically within their party. This must be humiliating and disgusting for once devoted members of the Democratic Party. Once down in the public view of sexually allegations and theft against the people, I believe nothing but a renewal of
The Democratic Party is in need. I hope for the sake of the country we can revive both parties to work in the best for the country. It’s been so hidden to the people and I feel We the people are in a position to babysit 24/7 365 days and this is appalling to pay Washington to do their job yet it’s we the people doing it.

Let’s believe for the sake of America and the people God will intervene placing
before us another chance. We’ve allowed enough damage to take place and I hope
and pray that if Moore is at fault God intervenes.

Thank you for years of your leadership
In our country and for our Heavemly
    Father. Love Sarah.
